“Protect Seniors: Keep Your Campaign Promises on Social Security and Medicare!”
To President-Elect Trump and Republican Congressional Leaders
We, the undersigned, call on President-Elect Trump and Republican leaders to honor their campaign promises to ensure the safety, security, and protection of America’s seniors. Seniors have worked tirelessly for decades, contributing to programs like Social Security and Medicare, essential for their dignity, care, and financial stability. These earned benefits must be preserved and strengthened.
Our Demands:
- Safety
Preserve Medicare as a robust program. Any plan to privatize or shift control to insurers risks prioritizing profits over patients and threatens seniors' access to essential care. Programs like Project 2025 must be rejected, which proposes transferring healthcare decisions to insurers. A report by the Center for American Progress highlights how such plans can deny seniors necessary care (American Progress, 2024). Dr. David Blumenthal has detailed how major Medicare Advantage insurers deny claims for essential care at alarming rates, leading to higher out-of-pocket costs and reduced access (Blumenthal, 2024). - Security
Social Security provides financial stability for retirees, widows, and people with disabilities. It is an earned benefit, not an entitlement. Weakening it through privatization or benefit reductions would violate promises made to seniors. The Social Security Administration (SSA) emphasizes Social Security's critical role in allowing seniors to live with dignity (SSA, 2024). Leaders must ensure its solvency without burdening contributors. - Protection
We must negotiate lower prescription drug prices through Medicare, cap out-of-pocket expenses, and maintain protections for pre-existing conditions to shield seniors from skyrocketing healthcare costs. We must also oppose policies that threaten Medicaid’s long-term care services for seniors. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) underscores the importance of Medicaid in safeguarding seniors’ well-being (CBPP, 2024).
Why This Matters
Millions of seniors depend on these programs to live with dignity. Weakening them would undermine the stability and well-being of countless families. We expect you to uphold your campaign commitments and implement policies that ensure safety, security, and protection for America’s seniors.
