Racism & America : Mandatory Class for RU Students

Change curriculum of Roosevelt University students to include not as an elective but as a MANDATORY part of their degree the class “Black and White Race Identity.”
In acknowledgement and review of the protests that #BlackLivesMatter, we are asking that every student who becomes part of Roosevelt University’s family becomes aware or more deeply invested in the systematic and cultural racism and assimilation that has negatively affected our nation so we can change it. We fiercely believe in the action of making it a required part of their journey at RU.

Why is this important?
In 1939, when Eleanor Roosevelt realized that the DAR was not allowing the esteemed Black opera singer, Marian Anderson, to perform for them on the racist rule that they only wanted white performers for their events at Constitutional Hall in D.C., Eleanor not only resigned from the DAR but also invited Marian to sing at the White House.
As alumni from Roosevelt University, we stand for every person’s life mattering. We believe that we can make a difference in our brothers’ and sisters’ lives moving forward, with the understanding that education changes the world. With students learning about America’s racial history, we can help grow a greater connection to the principles of social justice that our university was built on.
