Rename Reuben Ingold Park Earl Ofari Hutchinson Park
Reuben Ingold was a wealthy white realtor and investor who routinely inserted racially restrictive covenants on homes in View Park for nearly four decades. This totally barred African-Americans from purchasing homes in the area. The aim was to maintain a whites only View Park. That a park in a predominantly Black area in 2024 should be named after an avowed racist is a supreme insult.
The park should be renamed after long time civil rights activist and resident Earl Ofari Hutchinson. Hutchinson''s impeccable hald century plus record of fighting for social justice and civil rights is well known and recognized. His father Earl Hutchinson was chair of the the Los Angeles Realtists Assn., an organization of African-American realtors. His committee that fought for years for break down the racially restrictive barriers that barred Blacks and minorities from home ownership in areas such as View Park. At a time in American history when the names of those who propagated racist policies are being removed from parks, monuments, and public places and spaces being removed from public places and spaces in California and nationally, We call upon the L.A. County Board of Supervisors to honor a living civil rights icon Earl Ofari Hutchinson and his father's legacy as a fighter for open and fair housing by renaming Reuben Ingold Park Earl Ofari Hutchinson Park.
