Stop Using Ring Cameras for Mass Surveillance Networks!
Amazon’s Ring cameras are installed in millions of homes across the United States—mounted on front doors and hanging in backyards, alerting people when movement is picked up around their home.
At the Super Bowl, Amazon premiered its newest Ring feature: an AI-powered surveillance network called Search Party. The tech giant advertises its purpose to be to share information cameras pick up about animals to help neighbors find lost dogs. But it’s unlikely that their intentions are that innocent. If that technology exists, it can be used to share and match things like facial recognition and license plates, allowing Amazon to build a massive surveillance network using the homes of everyday Americans.
On top of this, Amazon is partnering with Flock Safety, a company building nationwide mass-surveillance infrastructure that’s used by ICE—meaning the cameras of everyday Americans could help carry out Trump’s cruel deportation agenda.
Why is this important?
People often buy Ring cameras to help them feel safer at home—and safety is exactly what they deserve. That includes knowing that their data is protected and not used to further a surveillance machine that is increasingly more dangerous under the Trump administration.
Ring and Amazon must immediately:
- End its partnership with Flock, ensuring that footage captured by everyday Americans isn’t used in Trump’s deportation campaign
- Clearly outline how users’ privacy and data will be protected
Until there are clear answers, Ring users should opt out of allowing their data to be accessed by giant tech companies with no guardrails by disabling their Ring cameras and opting out of the new Search Party feature.
