  • Improve Dormitory Conditions at UMES
Issue 1 - Multiple dorms at UMES have mold, both in the rooms and in the vents and community bathrooms. This is causing students to get sick and will only get worse as time goes on. Solution 1 -PROPER mold remediation needs to happen to ensure the safety of the students residing in these dorms. Remediation cannot happen when students' items are laying about and have spores fall on them and spread the mold further. Place industrial dehumidifiers in all community bathrooms. Issue 2 - Kitchens in dorms are not operable. The dorms are advertised to students and parents with a kitchen on premises. Some students with dietary restrictions need access to these kitchens and do not have them. Solution 2 - Over Winter break get all the dormitory kitchens fully operational. Issue 3 - Water on floors of community bathrooms. Need water proof shoes to walk in the bathroom. It's a safety issue for slipping and for the spread of bacteria and mold. Solution 3 - Have regular maintenance on drains and unclogging them. Also, ensure twice a day cleaning is happening in the community bathrooms and monitor bathrooms. Issue 4 - Community bathrooms are not being cleaned twice a day like stated. Many issues could be monitored and gotten ahead of if this procedure was taking place. Solution 4 - Enforce this. Once again, this was what was told to students and parents before attending UMES. Issue 5 - Heat is too high in some dorms and too low in others. This is causing issues with student's allergies and asthma, and causing mold to grow more. Solution 5 - Turn the heat to a reasonable temperature like 72 degrees C. Issue 6 - No hot water or water pressure in community bathrooms. Students are having a hard time washing their hair due to the lack of water pressure. Students are having a hard time taking showers as the water is always cold. Some are resorting to going to friends' places to shower. Solution 6 - Have the water heater and pumps assessed and maintained.

  • Let's Fix Congress....
Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC, offers one of the best quotes about the debt ceiling: "I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election. The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971 - before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc. Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took one (1) year or less to become the law of the land - all because of public pressure. Congressional Reform Act of 2012 1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office. 2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose. 3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do. 4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%. 5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people. 6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people. 7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 12/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women. Congress made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work. THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!

  • Make investment in our City’s neighborhood libraries a priority
We know that safe, welcoming, high-quality and well-programmed public spaces create neighborhoods and communities that are healthier, better connected, more proud of where they live and more confident in the ability of their government. A city that prioritizes such essential services and facilities for its people is a progressive city that is always moving forward. With the proposed “Rebuild” investment, the Free Library of Philadelphia will be able to upgrade and transform Philadelphia’s public library facilities, improving the lives of over 1 million Philadelphia residents. Make investment in our city’s neighborhood libraries a priority!

  • Don't repeal the ACA without a replacement - no gaps!
You would never shut down a busy highway without a detour in place. That would strand all of the motorists on it, and leave countless others with no way to get from point A to point B. Yet that's exactly what Congress is doing by trying to end the ACA without a replacement plan. Please don't let that happen.

On Friday, October 7, tape leaked of Donald Trump bragging to Billy Bush about serial sexual assault. Saturday Night Live has an obligation to treat it for what it is: a serious act. Make tonight's cold open a condemnation not just of the words, but the actions that they describe.

  • Universal Masking in School in Substantial Risk Category
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (NH DHHS) all recommend universal masking in schools K-12. "Due to the circulating and highly contagious Delta variant, CDC recommends universal indoor masking by all students (age 2 and older), staff, teachers, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status" (CDC). NH DHHS has provided a decision making matrix for a safe return to school based on community transmission and risk. Our school district is currently in the "Substantial Risk" category (the highest risk category). The US Department of Education states their #1 priority is the health and safety of students, school personnel, and families. At the last school board meeting it was decided to alter the guidance to allow unmasked classrooms at HCS and Hampstead Middle School in the substantial risk category against all guidance from state and federal public health experts. If you feel our schools should be following the advice from our local health officials please sign and share this petition. Thank you for your time.
