Governor Phil Murphy, please grant commutation clemency to Arcadio J. NovaGovernor Phil Murphy, please grant commutation clemency to Arcadio J. Nova We urge New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, to grant commutation clemency to Arcadio J. Nova (AJ); a devoted father of five; small business owner; and community servant who is currently serving a life sentence, based on deeply flawed evidence and procedural errors. This petition calls for a thorough review of AJ’s case while considering clemency. Arcadio J. Nova is a family man whose life exemplifies the “American Dream”, until it was derailed by a wrongful conviction. Raised in Washington Heights, New York, AJ demonstrated remarkable resilience when he stepped up to support his family after his father’s untimely death. He later earned his associate degree in Computer Information Systems; opened a Christian bookstore in Paterson, New Jersey, and built a life centered on family, faith, and community service. Why This Matters? AJ Nova’s case represents a profound miscarriage of justice for the following compelling reasons: Flawed Investigation and Evidence No DNA evidence No Fingerprints No Confession No Medical reports linking AJ to the alleged crime. Compromised Identification Process: The photo lineup violated New Jersey Attorney General Guidelines, and involved suggestive techniques tainting the identification. Inconsistent Description: The victim’s initial description of the perpetrator did not match AJ’s distinctive physical features, including his prominent mole and bushy eyebrows. Legal System Failures Ineffective Counsel: AJ’s defense attorney failed to cross-examine the key witness, severely compromising his right to a fair trial. Jury Misconduct: At least one juror stated on the record that he will not give AJ a fair trial. Both trial judge and attorney refused to recuse him. Trial Penalty: AJ’s decision to maintain his innocence, rather than accept a 15- year plea deal, resulted in a life sentence, highlighting the harsh reality of the “trial penalty”. Personal Character and Achievements: Despite his incarceration, AJ has demonstrated remarkable resilience and commitment to self-improvement: AJ earned a paralegal certificate and uses his bilingual skills to assist others. Maintained an exemplary disciplinary record. Authored a book on “why Criminal trials are lost” to bring awareness to those waiting for trial. He continues to be a devoted father to his children. Call to Action We respectfully implore Governor Murphy to Grant Commutation clemency to AJ Nova in light of the significant errors in his case; ordering an immediate review of the investigation and trial proceedings; consider AJ’s exemplary conduct during incarceration, and see his potential to contribute positively to society. Why Governor Murphy Should Act This case aligns with New Jersey’s commitment to criminal justice reform and the Governor’s initiatives to address systemic injustices. Governor Murphy has recently shown leadership in expediting Commutation clemency petitions. AJ Nova’s case presents a fundamental opportunity to correct a clear miscarriage of justice. Granting clemency to AJ Nova would: Reunite a father with his children. Restore a valuable community member to society. Demonstrate New Jersey’s commitment to addressing wrongful convictions. Send a powerful message about the importance of fair trials and proper investigative procedures. AJ Nova’s case represents everything that can go wrong in our criminal justice system – from flawed investigations to compromised legal proceedings. By granting commutation clemency, Governor Murphy will right this wrong, restoring justice to a man who has demonstrated remarkable tenacity and is committed to personal growth despite his circumstances. By signing this petition, you join thousands of concerned citizens calling for justice for AJ Nova. Every signature brings us closer to reuniting a father with his children and correcting a grave injustice in our legal system. Deliver necessary care to the patients you've sworn to serve—including trans youth!A handful of hospitals, including NYU Langone, are suspending healthcare for transgender youth out of fear of Trump's malicious, anti-science, politically-driven edicts. And others, such as New York-Presbyterian, are taking pediatric gender care off its website. Add your name to the petition to demand hospitals in New York and across the country serve trans youth and their families, follow the guidance of health professionals, and continue providing care.1,832 of 2,000 Signatures

Tell Cuomo to Stop Using Prison Slave Labor to Make Hand SanitizerNew York Governor Andrew Cuomo is using prison slave labor to provide hand sanitizer to NYS schools and municipalities free of charge. Cuomo announced that, due to price gouging, New York State would develop its own line of hand sanitizer and make it readily available to all NYS schools and municipalities free of charge. While we applaud the Governor for taking measures to help New Yorkers combat the coronavirus, the use of prison slave labor to produce this hand sanitizer is morally reprehensible. The hand sanitizer is being made by Corcraft, a company that, thanks to state law, [move: is exempt from competitive bidding with other companies and] pays inmates between $0.16 and $0.65 per hour while averaging $48 million in sales per year and is exempt from competitive bidding, so state agencies are mandated to purchase their goods.19 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Mary Drummer, MoveOn Civic Action

Support free speech! Stop the censorship of a contemporary art mural in Roscoe, NY!This summer, Sunday Home, a furniture store, commissioned artist Seth Carnes to create a mural on the side of their building. They had permission from the building’s owner and a signed contract. The words “time to unperson” were to be painted in large white letters on a black wall, part of the artist’s ongoing project. After four days of painting, a local man approached Carnes and ordered him off the scaffold. He called the mural “vulgar” without explanation, and threatened to paint over the mural immediately. This man is not a town official and has no financial interest in the building. A report was filed with the NY State Police against the man. To protect the mural from vandalism, surveillance cameras were installed and signs have been posted. Since then, the mural remains unfinished, with continuing threats and efforts to censor and remove the mural by those who find it objectionable. Carnes has been issued a citation from the town claiming the mural is commercial signage which requires a permit. The citation includes a threat of fines and imprisonment. This mural is artwork. It is not a commercial sign. It is simply paint on a wall. The phrase “time to unperson” does not discriminate against any protected class. Misinterpreting an artwork as objectionable should not lead to censorship . Questions of meaning, or perceived offense should be a matter of discussion and tolerance, not brazen aggression. We believe this censorship is a violation of the artist’s First Amendment rights. If you believe in freedom of speech, tolerance, and 1st amendment rights for artists under the US Constitution, please sign this petition! BACKGROUND ON THE ARTWORK AND ARTIST This mural is part of the Miniluv project, created by Seth Indigo Carnes and originally co-curated as an intervention in 2023 with Rodney Harder at the Deep Water Literary Festival in Narrowsburg, New York, with the work of George Orwell as a theme. Similar versions of the same artwork, with the same wording have been displayed over the last two years in nearby public places like Narrowsburg, NY without complaints. The word “unperson” comes from the George Orwell novel 1984, a fictional depiction of an oppressive government using language to control citizens. Carnes takes an interpretive approach to the invented poetic phrase “time to unperson,” which combines the language of Orwell, advertising, self-help, escapism, and social media, with an intention that meaning will form in the eye of the beholder, where art acts as a mirror. Here’s what Seth Carnes writes in his artist statement: One of the concepts in 1984 was called doublethink, where words and phrases contain contradictory meanings and people may hold both to be true… Some invented words in the novel, such as ‘unperson’, suggest a meaning, but it is never clear, only implied. In this imaginary world, without free speech and open public discourse, there is no established meaning, only constant edits, censorship, and control by those in power… Art and poetry often feature a related but less severe effect, where symbolism, metaphor, irony, and play with language leave the work open to multiple interpretations. One way to help the community is more Pride flag emojis so we can express ourselves. Apple and Android devices do not have many Pride flag emoji options, so we request that they add more Pride flag emojis to show support for the LGBTQ+ community.199 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Rae K
