The package of DPS-related bills passed by the Michigan House of Representatives is punitive, petty and dangerous for the people of Detroit. The fact that these bills target only Detroit with unpopular and untested education experiments and anti-union measures shows this is not about what’s best for the children of Detroit—it’s about how the Michigan House can exert power over the people of Detroit. I urge Gov. Rick Snyder to veto the House bills, and I ask the House to take up the bipartisan Senate bills that, while not perfect, give Detroit’s schools a fair chance and offer hope to our students, families, educators and staff.

Background Information: Currently, in the School District of Springfield Township, students are given far too much free time online, often at the objection of their parents. Middle school students are allowed to scroll YouTube at lunch, despite multiple medical warnings about the hazards of excessive scrolling time on developing brains. YouTube is open and available to students on the school district's network despite parent requests to turn it off.  Petition Objectives: We, the undersigned, respectfully urge the Springfield Township School Board to: 1. Develop and implement a Safe-Usage Technology Policy that includes restrictions on providing free time on the internet to children.  2. Establish clear protocols for monitoring and enforcing the policy to ensure compliance and accountability among students, teachers, and staff members. 3. Provide adequate resources and support for the implementation of the policy, including training sessions for educators, indoor play bins for indoor recess purposes, parental involvement programs, and access to age-appropriate educational technology tools. 4. Regularly review and update the policy in response to evolving technological trends and emerging challenges, ensuring its effectiveness in safeguarding the well-being and academic success of our students. Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a source of companionship for young people without proper safeguards, it can harm their mental health. According to a recent study published in JAMA Network Open, approximately one in eight American teenagers and young adults are using AI chatbots for mental health guidance. (One in Eight Adolescents and Young Adults Use AI Chatbots for Mental Health Advice, 2025)  As constituents we ask that California's Legislators pass legislature that: 1. Set Age & Content Limits - Require a minimum age of 13 to use AI platforms  - Restrict AI from engaging in mental health counseling with minors - Enforce strong content protections for users under 18 2. Strengthen Privacy Protections - Limit collection and storage of photos and personal media - Protect young users’ identities and sensitive data

The Ontario government recently and with great cruelty and cynicism decided to throw a large number of children off the waiting list for IBI therapy based on subjective science at best. They have unilaterally decided to take all children off the list who are 5 years and older when the list is already 3 years plus in wait time and the majority of children don't get diagnosed until 3 to 4 years of age. Therefore, many children will be denied this much-needed help that was promised to them and their often poorly supported families who only have this hope of help. IBI is an intense form of ABA and is needed by children who have more severe cases of Autism and therefore require the greatest amount of support. It is key in helping them overcome their developmental challenges together with life and social communications skills and makes all the difference between them becoming functional and independent or life-long dependents. Parents whose children will be kicked off the list will receive a one-time payment of eight thousand dollars. This is not even enough to cover 2 months of therapy in most cases, and this therapy is usually needed for a few years to get the required results. This means many families will simply not be able to help their children, or might need to further mortgage their homes, or lose them all together. We, the community of parents who have affected children, respectfully ask that the government not only keep promises made but actually increase the funding that is necessary to have children accelerated on the list because that is what it means to a be caring and fair society; that is what it means to be Canadian. Help us, help our children, restore to them their basic rights to be a full part of their community and to have a voice and place in our world.
