  • Jumpstarting Laser Cutter for South Campus
Dear Mr. Fehlau, This letter is in regard to the long-awaited laser-cutting machine for the Media Design and Fine Arts graduate students. Currently, the machine is installed on site at south campus, but there are a couple issues that prevent us from making full use of it; i.e. a fume cabinet and a new card reader. We understand that it takes time it takes to implement new systems. However, the equipment is sitting unused in our studio and having a functioning laser cutter during weeks 12-14 would be extremely useful in completing our coursework. Even it is only operational on a part-time basis, it would save us valuable time commuting to Hillside to use their facilities and also free up both staff hours and equipment time for undergraduate students. Please let us know what would be the next step going forward to make this possible. We value the excellent education we are receiving at Art Center and the community of Fine Arts and Media Design that has been established at south campus since 2009. Our newly elected Grad Representative for ACSG, Geoff Ka’alani, is happy to meet with you to represent our interests. Thank you in advance for your consideration. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

  • Opting out of High Stakes Testing in Colorado
The Colorado standardized tests for K-12 public education are misused, inaccurate, and inappropriate tools used to judge student achievement, school quality, and teacher effectiveness. Additionally, taxpayer money should no longer be used to pay for the mass production of these tests, the grading of these tests, and the forensic examination of the legitimacy of the completed tests. We, the people of Colorado, in order to return a whole and equitable public education to the students of Colorado, exercise our right to opt out of high stakes testing in multiple ways: As parents/guardians we will opt our children out of the state test by exercising our 1st and 14th Amendment rights of the federal Constitution. As residents, we opt out by breaking the cycle of complicity; instead, we challenge and question by forming groups and hosting meetings where we can develop viable and realistic forms of resistance suited to our community's needs. We do not assume that those in power know best. As residents, we opt out by recognizing that the term "choice" is used by those in power to divert attention and resources from public schools and into the hands of privateers. As residents, we opt out by changing the narrative though our discourse with neighbors, parents, students, grandparents, schools, community organizations, and more, as we recognize its use to dismantle public education.

  • Keep universal masking in place in Hamden Public Schools
We write to request that the Hamden School District maintain universal masking for the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year. To date, Hamden has kept students, educators, families, and the broader community safe by following recommendations from the CDC and local health agencies like the Quinnipiac Valley Health District (QVHD) to create school COVID-19 policies. The CDC’s January 2022 guidance specifically recommends universal indoor masking by all students (ages 2 years and older), staff, teachers, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. The American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) reinforced the CDC’s guidance, recommending vaccination for children over 5 and universal masking as two critical strategies to be used in tandem to ensure the safety of ALL children, including those especially vulnerable to infection. Furthermore, a January 2022 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) demonstrated that masking was associated with reduced school closures, which in turn resulted in adverse health symptoms such as distress and anxiety for students. We are all tired, but let’s hold on a little longer until we have established that we can keep our communities safe without requiring masks. Thank you for your consideration and for all you do to keep our children safe.

  • Child Care Stabilization Grant - Equal Funds For ALL!
The current child care grant structure is inequitable. Larger centers receive much less money per child. Additionally, each center will receive a workforce allotment for pay raises, bonuses, added benefits, and recruitment funds that will go directly to teachers. However, the state has decided to cap the amount for any center with a capacity that serves 67 children or more. 55% of child care workers teach in centers licensed for 67 or more children, meaning the majority of the workforce is inequitably valued as essential workers during the pandemic. Every child care facility, large or small, should receive the same amount for every child and every teacher. Under the current plan, on the low end, a family home center licensed for 12 kids is receiving on average $24,000, which amounts to $2,000 per child. A center licensed for a capacity of less than 50 children will also receive an average of $24,000 yet that equates to only approximately $490 per child. A child care center with capacity of 200 children will receive only $450 per child, based on the conservative average amount of $90,000. We are not requesting that family home centers receive less, we are requesting that centers, regardless of their size, receive the same amount PER CHILD. That is a fair distribution of the federal monies.

  • Eugene's "Clear & Objective Code" revision proposals
Friday, April 12, 2019 To the Mayor, City Council, and Planning Commissioners: We are opposed to the overriding of past refinement plans and the casting aside of the work that has been done in the past by people who had the foresight to protect our natural resources. There are very sound reasons for the provisions of the South Hills Study, among them the protection of water, forests, habitat, the wildlife corridor, etc. We are opposed to the changes that you “recommend” with regard to the South Hills Study. Your proposed “Clear and Objective Code” governing new housing developments may streamline the process for developers, as you state as a goal, but this comes at a cost to the environment and to the livability of our area. You are moving much too fast to implement these changes. Most of the residents of this city have no knowledge whatsoever of what's being proposed or what's being done. Of the residents who ARE aware, we are being bombarded by this type of revision, such as the Transportation Plan in addition to this one, and by legal battles with multiple developers who are wreaking havoc in the South Hills. The deadline for public input is too soon! Please allow more time for people to read and attempt to comprehend the documents, and please put more thought and consideration into your proposal regarding sustainability and the preservation of our natural resources.
