Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is corrupt. In addition to accepting and concealing decades of lavish gifts from billionaire Republican mega donor Harlan Crow, he has refused to recuse himself from cases with glaring conflicts of interest. He cannot and is not an impartial judge. But, despite public demands, Thomas has not stepped down and he has not been impeached. “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver has an offer for Thomas. $1M annually if he resigns from Supreme Court and a $2.4M tour bus. Olentangy Local School District (OLSD) needs to be held accountable for past inactions in which their students were victims of racism, homophobia, transphobia, classism, ableism, etc. Taking responsibility would look like: 1. Hiring teachers and staff from a variety of backgrounds (i.e. people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, disabled individuals, etc) as opposed to hiring only white individuals as teachers, guidance counselors, and other staff. a. Firing staff who have made racist, homophobic, transphobic, classist, etc., remarks to a student (not putting them on paid leave). 2. Providing anti-discrimination as well as diversity and inclusion training to every employee of OLSD at the beginning of each school year, every year. 3. Providing students with an intersectional education (i.e. education that isn’t rooted in white supremacy). a. Teaching students about African-American history (other than the history of slavery in America) such as Juneteenth, Malcom X, Black Panther Party (any positive form of black history as we are only taught the negative). b.Teaching students about feminism outside of just Susan B. Anthony and the suffragette movement (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and current waves of feminism). c. Teaching students about LGBTQ+ history (starting with the Stonewall Riots) all the way up to current issues. d. Including LGBTQ+ sex education in health class 4. Mandatory class on diversity and inclusion beginning in Kindergarten continuously through 12th grade (grade appropriate topics, getting more difficult as the students get older). a. Starting in middle school, offer electives specifically in African American studies, Native American studies, LGBTQ+ studies, progressive movements (feminism, LGBTQ+, Black Lives Matter, etc.). 5. Remove all forms of law enforcement from schools and substitute with more guidance counselors, social workers, crisis interventionists, etc.

As you read this, our neighbors in Florida are fleeing and bracing for Hurricane Milton, one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic, which hit 180 mph sustained winds on Monday. And communities in the southeastern parts of the country that were devastated and destroyed by Hurricane Helene are still reeling and recovering. But the truth is, the Disaster Relief Fund, whose budget is set by Congress, "does not have the funds to make it through" the rest of the hurricane season. Despite the fact that Americans are suffering through the aftermath of being battered by a catastrophic hurricane, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said that "there's no rush for Congress to approve hurricane relief." It's egregious, and there is zero time to waste. There are lives and entire communities at stake. When natural disasters like Hurricane Milton and Helene strike, residents need to know that their government and community have their back. Will you sign the petition to demand that Congress return to pass disaster relief funding NOW?

Introduction: The 1995 Amendatory Act gave the Chicago mayor sole authority to lead Chicago Public Schools and the ability to appoint a five-member Board of Trustees and a CEO to lead the school district. In 1999, the Amendatory Act expanded the Board to seven and restored the name ―Board of Education of the City of Chicago. Ninety-six percent of school districts in the nation have elected school boards, with a variety of structures and methods of electing members. Every school district in Illinois except for Chicago is governed by some form of an elected school board. (http://www.ctunet.com/legislative/bill-elected-school-board) There is compelling evidence that, for over 15 years, the CPS Appointed Board‘s policies have failed to improve the education of the vast majority of Chicago public school students.The Illinois Legislature must pass a law to enact an elected school board. Present: An overwhelming majority of Chicagoans in 327 precincts VOTED YES on the advisory referendum for an Elected Representative School Board (ERSB) for CPS on November 6th. The results on the Elected School Board Referendum are 87% in favor where it was on the ballot. An Elected Representative School Board would be accountable to the citizens of Chicago as well as CPS teachers, parents and students and would be more diverse, reflecting the people it serves. Election requirements could mandate specific qualifications and cap campaign expenditures, thus reducing the influence of money and politics on education.
