  • Public Safety Before Profits for Uber and Lyft
Our names are Peter and Estifanos and we are leaders from the Montgomery County Professional Driver Union and Prince George's County Taxi Work Alliance, NTWA, AFL-CIO. We are cab drivers and we get fingerprinted because drivers serve the public. There are more than 10,000 licensed professional drivers in Maryland and all of us are required to get fingerprints under state regulations. Uber and Lyft are not fingerprinting their drivers and the public is at risk. Sadly, there have been several criminal incidents involving people who drive for Uber, including a recent kidnapping and sexual assault (links below.) Right now, the Maryland Public Services Commission is considering giving Uber and Lyft a waiver on legally required background checks. Please join me in telling them that we shouldn’t take chances when it comes to passenger safety. A level playing field keeps us all safe. ~Peter and Estifanos

  • Reject Alaska H.B. 80 - "Stand Your Ground"
Dear Members of the Alaska Legislature, We are writing to express our strong opinion as citizens of Alaska that H.B. 80, introduced by Rep. Mark Neuman (R), does not become law in our state. In light of the killing of Trayvon Martin in Florida and the controversy surrounding the rights of George Zimmerman to have used the force that he did in the situation he created, we should not be moving towards expanding such laws in our state. Alaskans already have a broad right to self-defense. Rep. Neuman's bill would only give more rights to criminals, making it harder to prove manslaughter or murder charges. Instead we should be finding ways to make our communities and all of the people who live in Alaska safer. Please reject H.B. 80. We Stand Our Ground to move towards caring for humanity, not creating an environment that divides and frightens. Sincerely, Concerned Citizens of the State of Alaska

  • Defund the Police in the City of Berkeley
Dear Mayor Arreguín and City Council members, We are devastated by the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and so many others at the hands of the police across our country and the state violence against Black people generally. Cities such as Los Angeles and Minneapolis have called to scale back the police department budget and reinvest those funds in health, educational and social services that serve Berkeley's Black communities. I urge you to do the same. The time to make large scale institutional changes like this is now. Reform is not enough. Studies cited in this article demonstrate that anti-bias training and other similar reforms will not make a significant impact on police brutality: https://www.thenation.com/article/activism/defund-police-protest/?fbclid=IwAR2NxSXsJsb535bnW5c3yAryGeZTzcKrQz1tgyz8RsXS9fCzwSS03jBYQ1g Berkeley is well-known for its leadership on progressive issues. We urge you to take a proactive stance on police brutality by cutting funding to the police department and reinvesting it in Black communities.

  • Verdad y Justicia para Jorge Montes/ Truth and Justice for Jorge Montes
We invite you to add your name to this public letter for truth and justice for Jorge Luis Montes Hernández. PUBLIC LETTER FROM THE MONTES DE MARÍA El Carmen de Bolívar, April 2, 2017 We, the campesinos of the Peaceful Process of the High Mountain of El Carmen de Bolívar, Montes de María, want to inform the public about the grave human rights violation that the social leader, JORGE LUIS MONTES HERNANDEZ is suffering and request solidarity from all sectors of society regarding his case. 1. JORGE LUIS MONTES HERNÁNDEZ, is a campesino from the High Mountain of El Carmen de Bolívar, who we recognize as the Coordinator of the Peaceful March of the High Mountain of Montes de María which took place in April 2013, who currently is detained and has been since September 9, 2013, as reprisal for his role as social leader in the region. 2. This Peaceful March, in which we mobilized, in total more than a thousand campesinos, demanding conditions for a dignified life, full reparation as victims of the armed conflict, and the recuperation of the avocado tree, led to an agreement of 91 points that were to be assumed by the National, Departmental, and Municipal Governments, which included commitments to improve education, roads, healthcare, and agricultural projects among other things, all of which has continued to receive follow-up through Assemblies, Technical Boards, and Committees. 3. After 3 years of imprisonment, the past 7th of March of this year, the First Criminal Court of the Circuit of Cartagena, unjustly condemned our leader JORGE LUIS MONTES HERNANDEZ, to 39 years of prison for allegedly committing the crimes of rebellion, and homicide,...
