Tell AG James: Don't Let Paramount Swallow CNN Whole!
Dear Attorney General James,
I am a resident of New York State and am concerned about the recent Paramount Skydance/Warner Bros. Discovery merger. I am asking for you to file a lawsuit on behalf of the people of New York on the grounds that this merger seriously impedes media independence.
Paramount/Skydance owns CBS, more specifically CBS News. That division has taken a deep turn to the right in its editorial policy in recent months. Paramount CEO David Ellison is a big supporter of the Trump Administration. Recently some CBS journalists of long standing have left the organization citing a lack of editorial freedom. President Trump has weighed in on some interviews and stories he disagreed with.
Warner Bros. Discovery owns CNN. President Trump has long expresses his displeasure with the news outlet, snubbing its reporters and labeling it "fake news". With the merger, David Ellison and President Trump might feel free to put their thumbs on the scale. As a consumer I want a wide variety of news outlets. This is especially so in these times of uncertainty and with a war in progress.
The entertainment divisions of both corporations would fare no better. Less money would be available for creative projects. Cable service prices will skyrocket because of shrinking programming.
Attorney General James, I am asking that you give attention to this merger in order to provide the people of New York media -- especially news media -- that serves them, rather than be a billionaire mouthpiece.

Why is this important?
The public needs to be informed. Right now we are in the midst of a rapidly changing war situation. The Trump Administration is not known for being fact-based. We, the people deserve and demand a variety of media outlets across the spectrum of political beliefs. Consumers demand a choice. We demand the right to make informed decisions. This is an election year; we need to have all the information we can get, and it needs to be as factual as possible.
