UBER & Lyft: Protect your drivers in this pandemic!

As an Uber driver every day I’m on the road because I have to provide for my family and in my mind, I’m thinking of my wife who is immunocompromised. Uber has not provided hand sanitizer or cleaning supplies, so I do what I can, but I worry that the coronavirus would be a death sentence for her. Here I am trying to make ends meet and if I’m exposed to the coronavirus at work, where I pick up and drop off so many people during the day, I could get her sick.

As it is now, I wouldn’t have caregiving leave to take care of her. Please join me in asking that Uber and Lyft protect their drivers by providing cleaning supplies and extending paid family and medical leave to all of their drivers so we can keep ourselves, our families, and our passengers safe.

~ William, Uber Driver

Why is this important?

UBER and Lyft drivers are on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic, shuttling people back and forth who still need to go to work and get groceries. But UBER and Lyft have yet to extend protections their drivers can actually take, including sick days and paid leave. And these companies aren’t providing the drivers who do want to keep working with adequate sanitary supplies.

That means drivers might feel forced to work when they feel ill, or when their family members are sick and need care. These drivers are taking care of us during this pandemic, and the companies they work for need to take care of them by providing critical benefits that protect them, their families, passengers, and communities.
