Household Cleaning Products Need Child-Safe Packaging to Reduce Accidental Poisonings

Require manufacturers of household cleaning products, detergents, and hand soaps that are sold as concentrated liquids, pods, strips, tablets, or capsules to package them in child-safe containers.

Why is this important?

In 2020 alone, 100,000 children under the age of six were poisoned by household cleaners (National Poison Control Center). Despite this staggeringly high number, there are no requirements in the United States for child-safety protections to be included on the packaging of most household cleaning products or detergents. With colorful, candy-shaped, concentrated cleaners on the rise, child poisoning incidents will only increase unless some protections are implemented.

Manufacturers of household cleaning products could quickly reduce the danger of accidental poisonings by packaging their concentrated cleaners with safety features such as childproof caps or safety latches that would make it difficult for children to access the contents.

We, the undersigned, petition the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) to require household cleaning products, detergents, and hand soap concentrates that are sold to consumers to be equipped with child-safe packaging.

Thank you for your consideration.
