Citizens for replacement of the interim director

Effective leadership in Animal Services requires a balance of compassion, administrative transparency, and professional collaboration. Unfortunately, the current environment under the Interim Director has become one of hostility and stagnation. Rather than fostering a team dedicated to the safety of our animals, we are seeing a pattern of behavior that is both unprofessional and counterproductive.
Key Concerns
I would like to highlight several specific areas of concern that require your immediate attention.
Professional Conduct: There is a consistent pattern of demeaning and belittling behavior toward staff and community members. Leadership should inspire, not intimidate. When those who ask questions or seek clarity are met with personal attacks or efforts to make them feel "small," the entire department suffers.
Operational Neglect: We are seeing a lack of urgency in daily operations. Tasks that are vital to the health and adoption rates of our animals are being treated with a "lazy" or "slacking" attitude. An interim role is not a placeholder for inaction; it is a period that requires active stewardship.
Hostile Environment: By prioritizing being the "biggest person in the room" through condescension rather than through expertise, the Interim Director has created a culture where people are afraid to speak up for the animals' best interests.
The Impact on the Community
When leadership is focused on ego rather than service, the most vulnerable among us—the animals—pay the price. Our shelter staff, volunteers, and the public deserve a director who treats them with respect and approaches the job with the high level of professionalism this county expects.
Closing & Call to Action
I urge this Board to look closely at the management style and the current output of Animal Services. We need a leader who is professional, proactive, and who values the contributions of others. Our community and our animals deserve better than the current status quo.
Why is this important?
The leadership of Animal Services is not merely a bureaucratic position; it is a role that directly impacts the safety, health, and lives of the most vulnerable animals in our community. This petition is vital because the current climate of unprofessionalism and administrative neglect has compromised the fundamental mission of the department.
