Keep Data Centers Out of Ohio! Pass a Moratorium Now!
Ohio is all in on the data center boom. As of December 2025, Ohio had 217 data centers, making it the fifth in the nation. And more are being planned.
While most of the data centers are in central Ohio, they’re expanding with many being constructed in Cleveland, Cincinnati, and other, rural areas of the state like Lima.
Our communities need safe air, drinking water, and lower electricity costs, not data centers. Tell the Ohio legislature: Pass a data center moratorium now!
Thanks to massive state tax breaks, data centers cost the state nearly $2 billion in 2025 and $1.6 billion in 2026. Local tax breaks added another $166.8 million in lost revenue.
That money could have gone to investments in healthcare, education, and other social safety net programs. Ohio literally cannot afford more data centers that give sweetheart tax deals to tech companies like Meta, Amazon Web Services, and Google to get richer, while our communities deal with the fallout.
The Ohio Legislature must pass a data center moratorium now!
Why is this important?
AI technology is advancing faster than community leaders and elected officials can keep up, and in Ohio, many of these data centers are going up without full transparency around who is behind them. Meanwhile, billionaires are getting richer from data centers that put a drain on local communities and force everyday people to foot the bill.
A 2022 study from UCLA and Columbia University found that historically redlined communities face the brunt of the pollution and toxicity from data centers.
Our communities will only suffer more with the construction of more centers and we deserve better.
