  • Change the sentence of Grant Hunter
The love of my life Grant Hunter received life without parole for a crime he was party to, but he himself did not commit. He got 1st-degree murder as if he was the shooter...he was not. He was just there to commit a robbery with the other people involved. They did not plan to hurt anyone and Grant himself did not hurt anyone. Please free my fiance, so that we may live our lives together! I am not asking for a release but for a change in the sentence to 25 to life, or even 15 to life, or lower...whatever is seen as fair...I just want him to come home someday!

  • Stop ME/CFS Discrimination
Over the last thirty years, the 1-2.5 million people in the United States with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (otherwise known as chronic fatigue syndrome) have faced relentless and life-threatening discrimination from HHS. As a result, we demand that the government increase our funding to approximately $250 million annually, making it commensurate with diseases of similar gravity, such as MS, and reflecting the vast numbers of people affected. Because we are too sick to advocate for ourselves, 25% of us being either bedridden or housebound, we ask that other, empathetic citizens help us fight for health funding equity. Thank you.

  • Change starting times for high schools to a later time
In a new policy statement published online Aug. 25, 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends middle and high schools delay the start of class to 8:30 a.m. or later. Doing so will align school schedules to the biological sleep rhythms of adolescents, whose sleep-wake cycles begin to shift up to two hours later at the start of puberty. - See more at: http://www.aap.org/en-us/about-the-aap/aap-press-room/Pages/Let-Them-Sleep-AAP-Recommends-Delaying-Start-Times-of-Middle-and-High-Schools-to-Combat-Teen-Sleep-Deprivation.aspx#sthash.S58kzWkC.dpuf

  • Mitch McConnell: Return the cocaine-linked money
McConnell has been a leading force in the war on drugs which has cost the US economy hundreds of billions and put tens of thousands behind bars for non-violent crimes. In 1996, he sponsored the "Enhanced Marijuana Penalties Act" to increase mandatory minimum sentence for marijuana possession. Recently it's come to light that a ship found carrying 90 pounds of cocaine was owned by McConnell's inlaws, the Chao family. The Chaos have given McConnell anywhere between $5-25 million in personal contributions. We are calling for McConnell to speak out about this and to return every last cent of the drug money.

  • Stop Koch Brothers' Take Over of the United Negro College Fund
Given that the Koch brother's positions on so many issues have been contrary to the needs of the African American community-from stand your ground to voter restriction to segregation in schools-they should not be allowed to be on the United Negro College Fund's board of directors. If that means that they will not give their $25 million donation then so be it. Until they demonstrate in practice that they support our concerns, they should not be given positions of influence. And I encourage all of good will and African Americans to financially support the historically black college or university (HBCU) of your choice. These institutions are vital to our community and we must step up and give our support.

  • Monsanto: Stop Spending Millions to Defeat GMO Labeling
If GMOs are perfectly safe as Monsanto contends, then why does Monsanto not want us to know whether the foods we eat contain GMOs? Monsanto alone spent over $4.5 million to defeat a Washington state ballot initiative to label GMOs. Monsanto and its allies collectively spent over $25 million to defeat a similar ballot initiative in California. Reports indicate that Monsanto has been hard at work to defeat GMO labeling bills in the Illinois legislature. We don’t want Monsanto’s money dictating Illinois’ public policy. Tell Monsanto to stop spending corporate money to defeat GMO labeling.

  • Domestic Violence is Violence!
Recently, California modified Proposition 36 or the Three Strikes law. Originally, the law stated that after committing three felonies a person could automatically be sentenced to a term of 25 years to life. Though a good law, it was flawed, in that it could treat small time felons as big time criminals. In order to make the Three Strikes law fair, legislators changed it so that a convicted felon could only get life in prison after committing three “serious or violent crimes.” The problem is that domestic violence is not on the list of serious or violent crimes. So, it is not okay to beat a stranger, but it is okay to beat your family.

  • Break the Senate Deadlock with a New Filibuster Rule
This petition promotes a replacement of the current Senate Filibuster rule as follows: "Each Senator shall be considered to represent one half the population of their state as determined by the latest US Census. For a bill to pass to the floor of the Senate for debate and vote requires a vote of Senators representing a majority of the citizens of the US." Currently a vote of 41 Senators will block a bill from reaching the floor. In both the Republican and Democratic case, this can represent the will of only 25% of our citizens. This change will serve to restore balance between the more rural and urban sections of our country and ensure that we can respond to the rapidly evolving needs of our society.

  • no mbta fare hikes/dervice cuts
The MBTA knew costs were rising, that they had an aging fleet; but they wait till it's a near crisis before informing the public. We have our own crisis. They need to go back to the drawing Board + find another way. Getting 25% fare hikes from the public that has a high unemployment rate, pays a much higher share towards their health costs, has had their cost of living increase but seniors + disabled people got no COLA for 2 years while they had 3.5% COLAS is not right, they need a new plan. One that doesn't get hikes off our backs
