  • Support Bill A8800
Dear Assembly Member, I write to urge you to support Assembly Bill A8800, which would allow houses of worship maximum access to rent empty school buildings that are not in use for school purposes. You have not yet signed on to A8800. This bill has support from a mosaic of New York including individuals from the left, right and center, and from Black, White, Latino and Asian communities! In New York City, 68 houses of worship that pay rent to the Department of Education will be evicted on February 12th. These houses of worship are a source of revenue for the city, very important during these tough economic times! Many of these houses of worship also make important contributions to their surrounding communities like donation drives, after school programs, and drug rehabilitation programs. Thus Assembly Member, I urge that you please sign-on to this important legislation. I am not asking for special treatment, but for equal treatment. Best,

  • Petition to Support and Confirm Phillip H. Kwon's Nomination to the NJ Supreme Court
We, the undersigned, support Mr. Phillip H. Kwon’s nomination to the New Jersey Supreme Court. We believe that Mr. Kwon is independent, fair, highly qualified who advocates for economic and social justice, and immigrant rights. His distinguished career as the principal legal and strategic adviser to the NJ Attorney General, prosecutor of public corruption and Chief of the Violent Crimes Unit in the United States Attorney’s Office, attorney in private practice engaged in a broad range of litigation and commercial transaction matters at an international law firm, and clerk to a United States District Court judge makes him eminently qualified to serve on the State’s highest court. In addition, Mr. Kwon brings diversity and a unique perspective to the State’s highest court. According to the 2010 Census, about 9% of NJ residents are Asian Pacific American. Considering the growing diversity of New Jersey, we believe that it is time to have an Asian Pacific American justice on the Supreme Court. The Asian Pacific American perspective is now the only major racial group that has not had a voice historically on the State’s highest court. If his nomination is confirmed, Mr. Kwon would be the first Asian Pacific American and the first immigrant justice on the Supreme Court of New Jersey. Therefore, we strongly urge the State Senate to support and confirm Mr. Kwon’s nomination to the New Jersey Supreme Court. Thank you.

  • Ratify Article the First!
We the undersigned petition our state representatives to move hastily in correcting one of the great, if not the greatest, threat to democracy, to the voice of the people being heard, the dilution of representation through population growth. This problem is so old, and has crept so quietly upon us, that few even realize it is at root of most all of our problems, be they local, state, federal, or international. While there is no one curative for this, we recognize that if the great State of New Mexico ratified Article the First it would be a down payment on a far bigger Federal House of Representatives, which would innately be more capable of representing more voices more accurately, and it would spark a fiery debate in America on the nature of democracy and its relationship to representation. It was out of such fiery debates that ideas took root and formed a new nation, which at its birth gave its citizens more say in what their government did than any other nation on Earth. We the people of New Mexico will have that again! Since we do not wish to burden this petition with a long justification for the ratification of Article the First, and as we live in the modern age, we offer up the following sites that presently address this issue. http://voltairez.hubpages.com/hub/Am-I-The-Last-American-Who-Believes-In-Demcracy http://voltairez.hubpages.com/hub/Stop-Diluting-Democracy Wikipedia offers a concise explanation of Article the First. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_the_First Naturally it will take a dedication to democracy our nation has not seen in a long time for our law makers to refresh the root of democracy by diluting their own individual power and influence, but what can we say, “Democracy: you’re either for it, or against it!”

  • Disbar Rudy Giuliani
Petition to Disbar Rudy Giuliani ****** We, the undersigned citizens of the United States and students of the legal profession, call on the New York Bar Association to immediately begin disbarment proceedings against Rudy Giuliani. In leading the efforts to undermine the peaceful transition of power after a free and fair election, Rudy Giuliani attacked the foundations of our democracy. Nearly 160 million Americans exercised their right to vote in the November 2020 election. Dozens of courts rejected unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud, and the Electoral College formally ratified President-elect Biden’s victory on December 14, 2020. Despite these clear expressions of the will of the people—and with full knowledge of the implications of their actions—Rudy Giuliani publicly campaigned against Congress’s certification of the Electoral College’s votes set for January 6, 2021 - and incited a crowd to "trial by combat" which subsequently stormed the Capitol. In doing so, Rudy Giuliani directly incited the January 6th insurrection, repeating dangerous and unsubstantiated statements regarding the election and abetting the lawless behavior of President Trump. A violent mob attacked the U.S. Capitol. Five people have died. The nation and the world watched as rioters took over the very halls and chambers that embody our democracy. Yet after the violence and terror of the day’s events, Rudy Giuliani still chose to persist in baseless objections to the will of the people. These actions prove Rudy Giuliani fundamentally unfit for membership in the legal profession. He has flagrantly violated some of the most elementary ethics rules governing the legal profession. In inciting and encouraging a violent insurrection against the U.S. government, he has potentially committed “a criminal act that reflects adversely on the lawyer’s honesty, trustworthiness, or fitness as a lawyer in other respects.” And by fanning the fury of aggrieved constituents through false claims of voter fraud, he has engaged in “conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation.” Most importantly, lawyers who betray the very democratic institutions they are charged with protecting and improving as “public citizens” are definitionally unfit for the legal profession. Rudy Giuliani has shown that he has no respect for the courts by deliberately ignoring that judges across the country and the ideological spectrum have rejected President Trump’s efforts to overturn the election. He has shown that he has no respect for the Constitution by violating its words when he arguably “engaged in insurrection or rebellion against” the United States. Worst of all, he has shown that he has no respect for the American public and our democracy by working tirelessly to disenfranchise tens of millions of voters. Such egregious breaches of integrity matter. The very existence of our profession is symbiotic with the preservation and furtherance of the American republic. If Rudy Giuliani’s actions do not result in any repercussions for his professional status as lawyer, that silence will send an unmistakable message to the rest of the legal community, to aspiring lawyers, and to the American public: that lawyers cannot be trusted with the task of protecting, let alone improving, our sacred democracy, and that lawyers can denigrate democratic institutions with impunity. The New York Bar must begin disbarment proceedings against Rudy Giuliani and send the message that the legal profession stands firmly in defense of our democratic institutions. They must do so whether or not Rudy Giuliani plans to assume the roles of advocate and counselor ever again, as a private or public lawyer. It is the least our profession can do to protect and defend our most cherished ideals and institutions.
