  • Rep. Butterfield: Please support the Voting Rights Amendment Act
We really need you to co-sponsor and vigorously support the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014. Americans' voting rights have been whittled away, and we need to reverse that trend. This Act will help towards that end.

  • We Say No to ProctorTrack!
The pandemic that is currently occurring throughout the world has impacted every sector of our societies and our ability as human beings, students, employees and employers. To adjust and adapt to this situation is evidence of our relentless perseverance, resourcefulness, and compassion. One sector that has been hit hard in this adjustment is in education. Students and faculty from Pre-k to college have had to shift from face-to-face learning/teaching to online learning/teaching overnight. And as a result, education platforms and testing platforms have been selected for use with little testing. A few weeks ago, St. George's University students had to pack up, fly out of Grenada and resettle in different parts of the world. We were instructed to continue our studies and that online education would be the new norm. Today, March 30th, 2020, the SOM's Term Five class took an exam written by faculty. We have concluded, after putting ourselves through many hours of U-World and Rx practice questions, that this exam and its questions were not indicative of the USMLE standardized questions. To add to our collective level of anxiety, frustration, uncertainty and fear, today's exam crashed during each block for multiple people in our class. The numbers can and I am sure will be analyzed once the recordings of over 1000 students are replayed to prove just how many students were affected by this issue. Hence, we write this petition to ask that you stop putting us through these difficult and stressful situations. As a class, we ask that you stop utilizing Proctor Track and instead start working on getting us on the right track to taking NBME standardized exams. Proctor Track has proven to be an inefficient software that is not capable of providing us as students the testing experience that we deserve to have and we ask that you search out a better, more efficient software that does.

  • Pause the Adelphi Road Sector Plan
As currently drafted, the Prince George’s County Council's Adelphi Road-UMGC-UMD Purple Line Station Area Sector Plan is entirely out of step with today’s climate crisis and with 21st-century principles of sustainable development. It fails to appropriately integrate environmental preservation with transit-associated development. In particular, the Sector Plan is a direct threat to the future of Guilford Woods, an environmentally sensitive ecosystem that is part of the Anacostia watershed. Up to now, the planning process for the Adelphi Road Sector Plan has failed to effectively engage key stakeholders and take community input into account. We are asking the Prince George's County Council to pause the planning process for one year to allow for a truly stakeholder-engaged approach.

  • Request for Relocation of the rental Boat “The Mistie Dawn”
We, the undersigned members and supporters of the Salt Springs community, respectfully request the removal of the boat “The Mistie Dawn”, which is anchored 24/7 in front of Salt Springs. This boat, primarily used for rental purposes and often left empty, is causing significant concern among local residents for the following reasons: 1. Environmental Impact: The community is concerned about the potential environmental damage the boat may cause to the fragile ecosystem of Salt Springs. There are reports that solid waste may be dumped into the water, which threatens the water quality and the health of the environment. 2. Disruption to the Sanctuary: Salt Springs is a cherished natural sanctuary, valued for its serenity and beauty. The constant presence of a large, empty boat detracts from the natural landscape and disrupts the experience for both residents and visitors who come to enjoy the springs. 3. Impact on Wildlife: The boat’s continuous anchorage could negatively affect local wildlife, potentially disturbing habitats and breeding areas of native species. Protecting the natural habitat of Salt Springs is of utmost importance to our community. 4. Commercial Use in a Protected Area: The boat is being rented out, raising concerns about the commercialization of a protected area. This use does not align with the values of our community or the intended purpose of the springs as a natural sanctuary. 5. Community Discontent: The boat belongs to an individual who does not reside in our town, and its constant presence has caused widespread dissatisfaction among local residents. We believe that the boat’s anchorage in front of the springs is not in the best interest of our community or the natural environment. Proposed Solution: We believe that the boat should be relocated to the marina, where it can be properly anchored and managed without causing harm to Salt Springs or disturbing the community. The marina is a more appropriate location for the boat, as it is designed to accommodate such vessels and would minimize the environmental and visual impact on the springs. Given these concerns and the proposed solution, we urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action to relocate the boat to the marina and ensure that Salt Springs remains a protected and pristine natural area for all to enjoy. We appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to your prompt response. Sincerely, Friends Of Salt Springs. friendsofsaltsprings.org [email protected]

  • Call for State Oversight: Pause the Interim Appointment of Dr. Shawn Joseph for PGCPS Superintendent
We, the undersigned residents, and taxpayers of Prince George’s County, respectfully urge Dr. Carey M. Wright, State Superintendent of Schools, to withhold approval of the appointment of Dr. Shawn Joseph as Interim Superintendent of Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS). Under Maryland Education Code § 4-201.1, the selection and appointment of an interim superintendent must follow a defined legal process that includes selecting from a list of three qualified finalists for consideration. That process is in place to preserve the integrity, transparency, and accountability of educational leadership decisions affecting hundreds of thousands of students and families. As outlined in Maryland law, the superintendent selection process is intentionally structured to include independent screening, a shortlist of finalists, and state-level oversight to ensure appointments are based on qualifications and merit—shielding the process from undue political influence. The recent action by the Prince George’s County Board of Education to force Millard House II to resign his position in violation of Board Policy 4135—a rule designed to maintain a strict separation between governance and advocacy, reinforcing the Board’s role as a neutral arbiter and ensuring that public education resources are not used for political purposes—followed by the announcement by the County Executive-Elect — to install Dr. Joseph as the interim superintendent appears to have bypassed these required procedures, specifically: 1.     Superintendent Millard House II served officially on Thursday, June 12, 2025. 2.     On June 13, 2025, less than 24 hours after the announcement that Superintendent Millard House II would resign, County Executive-Elect Aisha Braveboy publicly announced the appointment of Dr. Shawn Joseph as the interim superintendent. 3.     During the press conference, County Executive-Elect Aisha Braveboy stated that she had met with Board members several weeks earlier, which could potentially expose PGCPS to legal liability for violating Mr. House’s privacy rights. 4.     The announcement occurred before the Executive-Elect’s swearing-in and during the tenure of the current Acting County Executive, Tara Jackson, who retains lawful authority to fill any vacancy for the superintendent. 5.     Dr. Joseph has a history that raises significant concerns: • His contract with the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools in Tennessee was terminated due to findings of misconduct, which included dishonesty to the board and unethical procurement practices in 2019. • He runs a company registered in Maryland that is not in good standing with the Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation.  • Dr. Joseph's prior license issue and surrender in Tennessee raise legitimate concerns about his compliance with statutory reporting and certification requirements. • Dr. Joseph previously served as a superintendent in Delaware (2012-2015) and Tennessee (2016-2019). He has not served in a superintendent role since 2019, and no information has been shared with the public that Dr. Joseph possesses the Maryland State Superintendent certification under the Code of Maryland Regulations 13A.12.05.04. • He is affiliated with Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA), the firm selected by the State Board of Education to conduct superintendent searches, which presents a direct conflict of interest. 6.     Maryland law mandates that superintendent appointments be made from a list of qualified candidates, following State Board of Education regulations and procedures to guarantee fairness and transparency. During her press conference, the County Executive-Elect asserted that “her team,” which had not been revealed to the public, performed the search for the interim superintendent. 7.     The selection process for the County Elect appears to have circumvented the procedural safeguards outlined in MD Education Code § 4-201.1, which states that the selection should be made from a list of three nominees recommended by a search committee consisting of one member appointed by the State Superintendent and two residents appointed by the Governor. The public was not made aware of a list of candidates, and there is no clear evidence that any candidates, aside from Dr. Joseph, were assessed based on established criteria. 8.     Most current Board members have served in office for less than six months. They are unlikely to have completed the professional development required under MD Education Code §3-1004, which raises questions about the Board’s readiness to make a legally sound appointment, especially given that PGCPS has reached an 80% graduation rate, short of the 87% achieved in Maryland in 2017. 9. The Board is scheduled to approve the FY25 budget on June 26 but has not revealed the financial terms of the House’s separation, raising significant fiduciary and transparency concerns. 10.  These statutes and regulations strongly support the Petitioners’ concern that: • The Board’s process must adhere to the listed criteria and nominations. • Professional development is a prerequisite to effective and lawful decision-making. • Interim leadership is legally permitted pending a lawful appointment.
