The Irving Human Rights City Campaign in Irving, Texas recommends that the Irving City Council adopt the principles set forth by the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights signed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948 and which was adopted by the United States in 1948. December 10, 1948 is observed in the United States as Human Rights Day.
We request that the City of Irving declare itself a Human Rights City and commit to using the international human rights framework to safeguard and promote the rights of all people.
We request that the City of Irving declare itself a Human Rights City and commit to using the international human rights framework to safeguard and promote the rights of all people.
Why is this important?
Establishing our municipality as a Human Rights City cannot be merely a symbolic effort, but one which encourages citizen participation and includes under-represented populations in all decision-making in order to collectively make a true commitment to dignity and social justice for all people including those who have historically been excluded.
We recommend that the City establish an Office of Human Rights, hire a Director and implement a Human Rights Board made up of demographically diverse City residents to ensure a people-centered model. The office will be responsible for creating a human rights toolkit, hosting community forums and producing a yearly State of Human Rights in Irving to be delivered to the Mayor and City Council and, in addition, become part of the Annual City of Irving Address.
Functions of the Office of Human Rights can include, but will not be limited to:
-Advancement of positive health outcomes for its population
-Push for Human rights Education and Training for City Council and staff, with encouragement of State Board of Education, and Irving ISD to do the same
-Act to alleviate chronic homelessness and continual displacement
-Work with Irving’s diverse communities to foster positive relationships and interaction
-Embody an environment that is welcoming of and safe for immigrants, LGBTQIA and interfaith community
-Continue to take meaningful action on climate change and build on our community access to healthy and affordable food
We ask for your support by signing this petition and we offer a suggestion that you also relate your desire for Irving to become a Human Rights City to the City Mayor and Council members in-person, by phone, or by written correspondence and also by communicating your desires to friends and other interested persons. Letters to the Editor of publications are also impactful.
We thank you for giving your consideration to this request and petition.
