No-Spending Pledge: Stop Mike Braun's Power Grab

Mike Braun and the Indiana General Assembly; you have been put on notice.

Hoosiers will not tolerate your blatantly antidemocratic power grab. We will not allow you to redistrict our state and further disenfranchise 40% or more of your constituents. We will not allow you to circumvent the will of the people so blatantly. We will not allow you to forget who you are and who you serve.

You are representatives, not rulers.

You serve us, not party or power.

This is your notice. Hoosiers are acting immediately, with the leverage of our dollars, to ensure that you remember these truths and drop this outlandish attempt to redistrict our state. We will not return to business-as-usual until this demand has been met. We will not back down until we are ensured that our voting rights are protected.

We look forward to your response, not through your words, but through your actions.

Signed,

The Hoosiers at Whose Service You Stand

Why is this important?

This is a call to concrete action. We will stand together to stop the blatantly antidemocratic power grab by Mike Braun and the Indiana General Assembly.

Mike Braun is attempting to strong-arm the GOP supermajority in the Indiana General Assembly into disenfranchising 40% of Hoosiers. They know that they can't win any more seats at the voting booth. So rather than accept the will of Hoosiers, they are planning to cheat-- all to increase their own power. They think that we are powerless to stop them. But we are not.

We will hit them at the source of their power- the wallets of their wealthy/corporate sponsors and the Indiana tax base.

The residents of Central and Northwest Indiana are the economic driving forces of the state. Marion County, in particular, contributes 2-3x in state taxes what the residents who contributed those funds receive back in tax support. These areas subsidize the entire rest of the state-- and it's time they stopped allowing themselves to be pushed around by people who only want them to suffer.

The people of Marion County and Northwest Indiana need to remind Mike Braun and the Indiana General Assembly who has the power in the Hoosier state. Not the governor. Not the General Assembly. And certainly not the president. We do. And until our demands of ending this power grab and re-enfranchising Hoosiers are met, we will not back down.

To contribute to this movement, take the pledge below to halt discretionary spending and withhold our spending outside of our communities. While they think they've already taken all our power, we still have immense leverage with our dollars and how we choose to use them. When we work together all pulling in one direction, there's nothing we can't accomplish.

By signing this pledge I agree, to the best of my ability, to:

1. Immediately halt all discretionary spending to non-local businesses. I will keep your money in your wallet, or shift discretionary spending to a local alternatives that keep our money in our community. I will cancel streaming services, forego online and holiday purchases, pass on non-essential foodstuffs, and more- anything that isn't needed to keep me and my family fed, housed, and sustained for the future. I will remember when I am making these sacrifices that that this doesn't have to be permanent-- only until our demands are met. I will embrace short-term discomfort for long-term security.

2. Shift required purchases and spending to local businesses. There will be places this impossible, but I will make an active attempt wherever I can to shift required spending to local businesses. I will actively seek out local alternatives to my current spending outside of my community by researching, asking friends, neighbors and acquaintances, and keeping my eyes open for places that fit my needs in the community.

3. Contact all business with which I will no longer be spending, and specifically name Mike Braun and the Indiana GOP supermajority as the cause. I will make sure that the company I'm terminating my business with knows exactly why I am terminating our relationship and connects the loss of my dollars to Mike Braun and his lackeys, and their attempt to disenfranchise Hoosiers. This accomplishes two goals at once-- it is both a letter to my representatives stating our demands and the consequences for not meeting them, and a direct call to action for the company to apply pressure to your representatives.

4. Spend in cash whenever possible. Credit and debit cards siphon money from local businesses to massive companies. If I spend in cash whenever possible, I increase my effectiveness at starving companies outside of my community of the dollars they extract from me and my neighbors.

5. Share resources, information, local business alternative recommendations, and more with my neighbors to support them during the boycott. I will recommit to supporting my friends, family, and community in ways other than spending beyond my community's boundaries. This is going to take all of us, and it's going to take some sacrifices. It's going to take collective selflessness. But we will be stronger together through intentional community, mutual aid and support.

6. Contact my representatives and the office of Mike Braun to inform them of your intent to boycott non-local businesses and your demands for a return to spending. Let them know that there are consequences coming. Let them know that they're going to feel this if they don't start to act like representatives, not rulers.

7. Share this pledge as widely as possible, and encourage others to join the movement. The more we stand together, the stronger we are! Bring in as many people as possible, and you increase the strength and impact of your own contribution with every share and every word to a neighbor.

I know that my contribution my not be perfect, but by my signature below I pledge to uphold these seven calls to action to the best of my ability. I will not halt my adherence until Mike Braun and the Indiana General Assembly withdraw their attempt to redistrict the state and further disenfranchise Hoosiers. I will stand firmly with my community and endure this short-term sacrifice to uphold the right to representation in government.
