The City of Newburgh government can demonstrate that they’re committed to addressing the historical wrongs done to marginalized communities by advocating for a just and peaceful resolution for all affected parties by calling on Congressman Pat Ryan, representing District 18, to sponsor House Resolution 786: Calling for an immediate deescalation and ceasefire in Israel and occupied Palestine, while also promoting peace and the protection of innocent lives in the region, and to work towards a just resolution that addresses the historical injustices and ongoing struggles faced by Palestinians, as well as marginalized communities affected by historical displacement.
Why is this important?
Ethnic cleansing refers to the creation of an ethnically homogenous geographic area through the elimination of unwanted ethnic groups by deportation, forcible displacement, or genocide. This collective punishment of the Palestinian people includes shutting off all access to electricity, drinking water, food, and humanitarian aid.
Both the displacement of Black residents in the name of Urban Renewal and the displacement of Palestinians from their land since 1948 represent instances of systemic injustice and dispossession.
The City of Newburgh government can vow to combat antisemitism, Islamophobia, and ethno-nationalism in all its forms by demonstrating that the City of Newburgh advocates for the dignity and safety of residents in every community, regardless of what crimes its leadership may commit, and that peaceful diplomacy is the only way to achieve this safety and dignity.
