  • ICE: Use Prosecutorial Discretion to keep ura Sujey Menjivar Lara (A #098-595-939) 3-year-old so...
Please stop the deportation of our friend and community member, Aura Sujey Menjivar Lara A#098-595-939. In a recent memo ICE indicated that parents of U.S. born minors should not be deported. We ask that you implement this policy change and let Aura stay with her 3-year-old son Edwin Rodriguez Menjivar. Aura is a loving mother, an integral part of the Howard County community in Columbia, Maryland. Aura has lived in the United States since November 04, 2004. On October 9th, 2012 Aura was pulled over by a local police and after not being able to produce a driver license Aura was taken in. Aura charges were dropped but ICE put a hold on her. Aura had no criminal record. We ask ICE in Baltimore to close Aura’s case. Aura escaped violence in El Salvador to provide a better life for herself, and now that Aura is the sole provider for Edwin its inhuman to deport Aura and Edwin to a country that is not their home. Thousands of innocent people are killed in El Salvador don’t let a mother of Edwin a US Citizens be the next victim. LAST year The Department of State continues to warn U.S. citizens that crime and violence levels in El Salvador remain critically high. In 2012, El Salvador had one of the highest per capita murder rates in the world: 69 per 100,000 people (by comparison, the murder rate in Massachusetts, with a similar geographical area and population, was 2.6 per 100,000). On March 27th, 2014 former ICE Deputy Director John Sandweg made the case that people like Aura who have no criminal record other than a “re-entry” charge should not be a high priority for ICE because Aura will be torn from her son Edwin, she is a single mom and ICE needs to use its scarce resources tracking down high priority criminals not single mothers who putting food on the table for their 3-year-old US Citizen sons. Aura works full time and when she is not working she spends her time with Edwin. Aura wants to further her education in the United States of America, in El Salvador Aura completed two semesters of University in Computer Science Management. . Aura spent 5 nights and 4 days in jail when she was detained, and her son Edwin missed her dearly. Edwin is afraid for his mother safety, Edwin is developing depression like symptoms that worry Aura. Aura has established roots in the United States of America Aura is a good mother, a good American, and Edwin needs her in Howard County not in El Salvador. How can a 3-year-old without their mother? Thank you for your attention and we hope that you make the right decision & let Aura stay home with Edwin. Should law enforcement personnel be: 1. allowed to get a no knock search warrant for someone's house off a supposed anonymous tip without any verification or investigation of the anonymous tip? The tip need not be factual just anonymous and here they come. 2. allowed to search your home without presenting a warrant prior to searching? We were informed that they were not required to present a warrant until they had completed their search. 3. allowed to interrogate a child of 11 years of age without the parents' permission or even parents presence during the interrogation? They forced the child out of the living room with his parents into another room to do the interogation. My understanding is that minors are supposed to be protected from this type of behavior. Supposably in La. - A parent or guardian is allowed to be present during the questioning of a minor if the minor's rights have not been waived. Read more: Louisiana Laws Regarding Questioning a Minor | eHow.com http://www.ehow.com/info_8629225_louisiana-laws-regarding-questioning-minor.html#ixzz1xjj2fg4G 4. allowed to seize property without leaving a receipt for the property. No receipt was left for any property at all. No receipt no proof it was taken off your property so you are unable to get the private property returned. Art. 166. Receipt for seized property When a peace officer seizes property under a warrant he shall give a receipt to the person from whom the property is taken, describing the property in detail. In the absence of such person, the peace officer shall leave the receipt in the place where the property was seized. 5. allowed to administer object lessons such as slamming/ramming/pile-driving their knees into a person's back and ribs while said person is face down on the floor as they finally identify themselves as law enforcement personnel: the object lesson resulted in at least 1 broken rib or at least that is what the hospital said. Total injuries were a scalp wound to the back of the head (I think from pistol butt), broke nose, and broken ribs, and pinched nerve. I filed a complaint with internal affairs on this but they said they had to have the doctors report before they would investigate and to get the records cost money I do not have. They charged me with assault on a police officer and resisiting arrest. Had they been in uniform, identifying them as law enforcement would have been easier instead of as being armed intruders in my mothers house. We are supposed to be able to protect our homes and family and ourselves in our home. 6. allowed to be insulting and rude, called my niece a drug head, my cousin a smart ass, and so forth. They were rude and insulting to my mother and she is pissed about all of this mess, after all it was her door they busted/broke in. They destroy private property and have no responsiblity to repair or replace the property. 7. allowed to endanger someones life by preventing then from getting access to their oxygen. My stepfather has COPD and is on pure oxygen and they would not allow him into the house to get his oxygen but then had they investigated as they claim they would have been aware of this fact. But then had they investigated they would have known who lived in the house and who each person was. As for my stepfather they could have easily escorted him into the house to get his oxygen tank. 8. Thus far I am told we have no legal recourse to seek JUSTICE! or redress.

  • Race Inequalities in the Justice System
STOP Race Inequalities in the Criminal Justice System Who’s going to cry for the little boy inside? Who’s going to speak on our children behalf? He being the boy that the justice system here in Georgia is legally claiming he is considered a man at the tender age of 17. What 17 year old can even maturely think for himself? Medical Studies states the brain does not begin to resemble that of an adult until the early 20s. Georgia Law 21 years old buy liquor 19 years old to buy cigarettes 18 years old to get a tattoo 18 years old to access clubs 18 years old before you can vote 18 years old before you can be evicted from your parent’s home With a 30 day notice But at 17 years old is consider an adult for any crimes, whether misdemeanor or felony THESE NUMBERS DOES NOT EQUATE Appropriately I WILL HAVE TO CRY FOR HIM WILL YOU? Who’s going to speak for him? He being the boy, but society is trying to make him this a man at 17, cannot speak for himself. He cannot speak for himself in this unjust Justice System that is in place, which is effecting, affecting and infecting OUR children and OUR families. 1. Let's take back our right to pray in schools 2. Let’s take back our children. Take back our right to discipline. 3. Let's put a stop to the Enslaved environment [jail] is a system that is monopolizing off these kids ignorance and monopolizing off their families as well. The privatization of the criminal system is making it profitable to keep people in jail, prison, and halfway houses. 4. Let's fight for the right to speak on OUR children’s behalf in the Justice System until he reaches the age of 21. We currently [in the State of good old Georgia cannot speak for, speak to or defend the child at 17 year old except with Legal Paid Representation. A public Defender will not speak to a parent if the child is 17 years old, yet the National Medical Association cleared describe a physical Man front frontals does not even start to mature until approximately age 21 [No one will speak to you concerning your child, in Georgia, not the public defender, not the District Attorneys, not the police, not the courts, NO ONE IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM, using the age limit excuse] THIS HAS TO BE CHANGED. These young men do not understand the Legal Language, some cannot even read for themselves, let alone understands when they are signing their lives away based on what the System tells them. Not what is always legally the right decision for that young man to make. Some of our children have signed their lives away. 5. Let's fight for the right that a legitimate family that is inquiring on their love one should have the right to do so without being harassed, by those that have the POWER over those that are incarcerated. 6. Let's Fight for accountably of those that are in Power [the Police Departments, the Courts, The Judges, the chief administrative officer in the Prison {warden's}, the prison guards {especially}, etc.} over those that are incarcerated. 7. Probation needs CHANGE the laws need to be in place for DIVERSION PROGRAMS {state, county, city, education, community services programs] instead of paid probation. The Job Market is not even open to those that have a College Degree, how can these boys and young men pay Probation without an income. • Stand United For Women's Reproductive Health
We, the undersigned, ask that you read the following petition. Please take into consideration the very valid points offered below before taking action against this mandate. We fear the fever of politics may have caused many in the House and Senate to forget the wide variety of health-saving benefits offered by oral contraceptives, and we strive to keep the health of American women from being compromised. While considering, discussing, and especially when voting on matters regarding contraceptives and women's reproductive health, please keep in mind that "the Pill" is frequently used for matters other than simply prohibiting pregnancy. More than 1.5 MILLION women in the United States take birth control pills for non-contraceptive purposes. A woman's chance of developing endometrial and ovarian cancer can be decreased by more than 70 percent—just by taking the Pill for 12 years. Even taking it for just 1 to 5 years can lower those risks by up to 40%. The Pill also provides relief from serious health complications such as polycystic ovarian syndrome and endometriosis, which can cause intense pain, scarring of the uterine lining, and sometimes infertility. It also defends against diseases of the fallopian tubes, which are known as pelvic provocative diseases. Women suffering from amenorrhea (lack of periods from low weight, stress, excessive exercise, or damage to the ovaries from radiation or chemotherapy) also benefit greatly because the estrogen in the Pill evens this balance by creating regular menstrual cycles. Oral contraceptives (OCs) are also frequently prescribed to help women have clearer skin and lighter, less painful periods. This may not seem like a big deal to those who have never menstruated, but please be assured, crippling pain and heavy flow periods every 28 days or so, for years on end, can be debilitating and lead to dependence on pain killers. According to research done by the nonprofit Guttmacher Institute, which used data from the National Survey of Family Growth, 14% of all women who take the Pill do so exclusively for reasons unrelated to controlling pregnancy. More than 58% of users say they take it, at least in part, for purposes other than pregnancy prevention. The debate over contraceptives and women's reproductive health issues has become clouded by politics. Making OCs affordable for women should not become a battle over Republicans vs. Democrats winning legislation—it should be about what's in the best interest of American women. PLEASE do not infringe upon accessibility of these drugs because of you may not want to support a policy of President Obama's. This should not be a battle between liberals and conservatives—it's about keeping Americans healthy and safe. On matters regarding the beliefs of Catholic employers—since when has the religious affiliation of an employer affected the type of health care coverage its employees receive? The cost to the company will still be the same. Why should a woman have to call and discuss her contraceptive needs with an insurance agent, when they should be able to go straight their doctor? The inclusion of contraceptives in this mandate is not forcing Catholics to do anything, nor is it intended to trample upon their rights. This is a matter of health coverage. The religious implications fall upon the shoulders of the individual, and no woman who's given the option of access to the Pill has to take it. Thank you for your time and attention.

  • Demand ICA Release All Detainees
On August 5, 2020, James Hill passed away, alone in ICE custody. Mr. Hill, 72, contracted COVID-19 while detained in the Immigration Centers of America’s (ICA) for-profit prison in Farmville, VA. His scheduled date of release was July 9, 2020. At present, 97% of detainees at ICA-Farmville have been infected with COVID-19 (the highest rate of any immigrant detention facility in the country) due to crowded, inhumane conditions, poor medical care, lack of oversight, and transfers of detainees from COVID-19 hotspots, such as Florida and Arizona, without following quarantine protocol. Mr. Hill is not the first victim of ICA’s fatal negligence; the Farmville facility has a history of failing to meet the appropriate standards and putting detainees’ lives at risk. In October 2011, Anibal Ramirez-Ramirez died from liver failure following ICA’s “failure to communicate critically important information, inadequate medical screenings, and inexcusable delays in referral to higher-level care” (ACLU, February 2016). Four days after Mr. Ramirez-Ramirez’s death, ICA-Farmville failed their annual inspection, with the report citing that, among other things, only half of ICA’s guards had received basic CPR training. Both Mr. Hill and Mr. Ramirez-Ramirez died in Virginia hospitals still separated from their friends and family. Recently released documents (from ICE under a FOIA request) confirm an unconscionable pattern of abuses at ICA-Farmville: a shackled detainee pepper sprayed in the face and tied to a bed for two days; threats of sabotaged immigration cases in retaliation for public complaints about maggot-infested food; a man unjustifiably chained to a restraint bed for four days. Most recently, those who have spoken up regarding the lack of protection from COVID-19 have been pepper sprayed and forced into isolation (NPR, June 2020). This cannot stand. The privatization of ICE detention centers has made it profitable to neglect, terrorize, and cage human beings, and incentivizes the negligent cost-cutting at ICA-Farmville that has resulted in two deaths and the nation’s largest ICE facility COVID-19 outbreak. Those who have profited from this maladministration include investors Russell Harper, Warren Coleman, and Ken Newsome—all of whom have built wealth from the dehumanization of detainees. We must free the people who have been denied freedom of movement by ICA and ICE. We must Free Them All before more are killed. Our demands for Russell Harper, Warren Coleman, and Ken Newsome are as follows: 1) Disband ICA and put the liquidated assets into immigrant bonds and mutual aid funds. 2) Begin a reparations program for undocumented people who have been harmed at Immigration Centers of America. 3) Issue a public apology and public impact statement on the effect ICA has had on people who have been, or are currently, detained in the ICA facilities and their families. We demand that any institutions affiliated with these individuals, such as James Madison University, The Boys & Girls Club of Metro Richmond, Sheltering Arms, etc., publicly condemn and cut all ties with ICA and those associated with the business. Those who do not hold these individuals to account are complicit in the harm inflicted upon immigrants and families impacted by ICA detention. We urge these institutions to join us in our demands for restitution from those responsible for these harms and to echo our call to Free Them All.

  • Petition for Immediate Action to Address Rising Car Theft in the Shipyard Neighborhood
Dear Captain Maron,  I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you as a concerned resident of the Shipyard in San Francisco. Over the past three weeks, our community has experienced a distressing trend: three cars have been stolen from our neighborhood, averaging one car theft per week. This alarming rate of crime is unacceptable and has left us, the residents, feeling vulnerable and unsafe in our own homes. Despite our efforts to secure our neighborhood with surveillance cameras and enhanced lighting, these measures have proven insufficient. Thieves are still managing to enter our garages and steal our vehicles, demonstrating a level of audacity and determination that is deeply troubling. We have reported these incidents to the San Francisco Police Department, but we have yet to see any meaningful action or resolution. Two such reports are documented under police report numbers 240-296-009 and 240-340-678. We are reaching out to you, our elected representatives and law enforcement leaders, to bring attention to this pressing issue and to request your immediate intervention. Given the gravity of the situation, we urge you to consider the following actions: 1. Targeted Law Enforcement Operations: We request that the San Francisco Police Department conduct targeted operations focused on our neighborhood. This could include undercover operations and sting operations aimed at apprehending those responsible for these crimes. 2. Improved Response Times: The response time to reported incidents needs to be drastically improved. Faster police response can increase the likelihood of catching criminals in the act and preventing further thefts. 3. Community Policing Initiatives: Implementing community policing strategies where officers build relationships with residents and understand the specific issues of our neighborhood can lead to more effective crime prevention and community support. 4. Enhanced Security Measures: While we have cameras and lights, we need more advanced security solutions such as license plate recognition technology at entry and exit points of our community and smart alarm systems that can alert residents and authorities in real-time. 5. Legislative Support for Tougher Penalties: We urge our state representatives to push for legislative changes that impose harsher penalties for car theft and related crimes. This includes measures to prevent repeat offenders from exploiting current legal loopholes. 6. Public Awareness and Media Support: We request that the San Francisco Chronicle highlight the challenges faced by our community and advocate for stronger measures to combat these thefts. Increased public awareness can lead to broader support for the necessary changes. We have documented police reports for each of these incidents and are more than willing to provide any additional information required to facilitate your efforts. Our community deserves to feel safe and protected, and we believe that with your support and intervention, we can achieve meaningful change. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. We look forward to your prompt response and to working together to make the Shipyard a safer place for all its residents. Sincerely, SF Shipyard Residents cc: SFPD Chief William "Bill" Scott SF Mayor London Breed  SF DA Brooke Jenkins  CA State Senator Scott Wiener  CA State Assembly Member Matt Haney

  • We Need a Rapid Phase Out of Fracking in Pennsylvania
We, the undersigned, call on you to begin a rapid phase out of fracking in Pennsylvania. The climate clock we installed in the Capitol indicates that we have fewer than 5 years to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees C. Records falling as extreme weather conditions become commonplace are cautionary tales of what will come if you fail to act. Ending fracking is not something that occurs with the flip of a switch. The need for immediate action is made more urgent by the understanding that many things must happen to make the transition to renewable energy as smooth as possible. The inevitable transition will be more abrupt the longer you wait to act. For example, the longer you wait to start preparing the workforce for the transition, you put workers at ever greater risk of simply being displaced when their fracking jobs go away. The hundreds of thousands of abandoned wells in Pennsylvania must be plugged to stop climate-killing methane from leaking into the atmosphere unchecked. Well plugging can create new jobs that workers who want them can be transitioned into right now with the proper training. It’s a win-win-win for the workers, the people living near abandoned wells, and the planet. Creating well plugging jobs is just one example. Here are other actions you can take to launch the rapid phase out while protecting communities still exposed to fracking during the transition. -The state must assess the climate impacts of proposed projects and must make the assessment in an open, transparent, and verifiable process that engages the public. -The state must substantially grow its renewable capacity. -The state must reject Carbon Capture and Storage, Hydrogen, LNG exports, Chemical recycling, and all other “climate solutions” that represent nothing more than the next generation of fracking and dirty energy. -The state must not subsidize fracking or any of the false solutions listed above. -The state must assess the cumulative impacts of fracking and consult the Compendium of Scientific, Medical, and Media Findings Demonstrating Risks and Harms of Fracking and Associated Gas and Oil Infrastructure  -The Governor must mandate that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and other regulatory agencies and the Attorney General make polluters pay (and stop rewarding polluters with more permits).  -The state must increase bonding requirements by amount but also by requiring ongoing monitoring of well or disposal sites to catch migration of pollution early and require the responsible operator/company to pay for the cleanup. -The DEP must dramatically improve its enforcement of existing regulations and institute serious consequences for drillers who fail to comply with either administrative or environmental, health, and safety rules. -The state must not enter into voluntary compliance programs and must terminate the “radical transparency” agreement with CNX. -The state must address community impacts like those in Dimock and the Woodlands. -The DEP must commit to protecting overburdened communities. -The DEP must increase monitoring of groundwater and surface water where there is a high concentration of fracking and related infrastructure and increase monitoring of methane. -The Department of Health (DOH) should be proactively protecting communities with medical monitoring of those near fracking sites and related infrastructure, including fracking fluid storage and waste sites and locations with incidents of pollution. The agency could use the complaint and investigation lists that DEP maintains as a start or map out the location of all wells/infrastructure to identify hot spots.

  • #ProtectTRIO - Protect Federal TRIO Programs – Our Students’ Futures Depend on It
We, the undersigned, urge Congress to reject the White House’s proposal to eliminate funding for the Federal TRIO Programs in the Fiscal Year 2026 budget. These programs have opened doors for millions of hardworking Americans—providing access to higher education, opportunity for advancement, and the tools to build a better future. TRIO programs serve over 800,000 Americans each year. From rural towns to urban centers, TRIO creates pathways to college and careers for students who work hard and deserve a shot at success. TRIO is a proven, strategic investment in America. These eight (8) federal programs help students from working-class families, veterans, and those with limited resources reach their educational goals and contribute fully to our nation’s economy and workforce: 1. Upward Bound (UB) 2. Upward Bound Math-Science (UBMS) 3. Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) 4. Talent Search (ETS) 5. Student Support Services (SSS) 6. Educational Opportunity Centers (EOC) 7. Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair) 8. Training Program for Federal TRIO Staff For over 50 years, TRIO has earned bipartisan support in Congress because it delivers results for American families, communities, and the economy. The results speak for themselves: • Upward Bound students are more than twice as likely to earn a bachelor’s degree by age 24 than peers in the lowest income quartile. • Student Support Services participants are 47% more likely to complete a two-year degree or transfer, and 18% more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree than similar nonparticipants. • Talent Search students are 33% more likely to enroll in college than others from similar backgrounds. • Veterans Upward Bound participants are 42% more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree within six years. • McNair Scholars are 78% more likely to enroll in graduate school than similarly situated low-income college graduates. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, students from the highest-income families are four times more likely to earn a college degree than their lowest-income peers. TRIO helps close that gap through practical, results-driven support—not theory. Beyond individual success stories, TRIO yields economic benefits through increased earnings, reduced dependency on public programs, and stronger participation in the workforce. It’s not just effective—it’s smart economic policy. But now, these life-changing programs are at risk. Congress is finalizing the FY26 federal budget now. If we don’t act, these opportunities may disappear for hundreds of thousands of students. If TRIO is eliminated: • Students will lose vital academic, financial, and career support. • Families across America will lose one of the few reliable pathways to higher education. • Our nation will lose out on talent, innovation, and hard work that fuels our future. We call on Congress to fully fund the Federal TRIO Programs in FY26. TRIO opens doors. It builds futures. It drives American success. What can you do? • Sign this petition and make your voice heard. • Call or email your members of Congress and demand full support and funding for TRIO. • Share this with your networks—your classmates, colleagues, community leaders, and alumni. Whether you’re a student, parent, educator, veteran, policymaker, or proud supporter of opportunity—this fight belongs to all of us. TRIO is an investment in Americans—and in America. Support access. Create opportunity. Invest in America. #TRIOWorks #DefendTRIO #InvestInAmerica #OpportunityForAll

  • Raise SSI/SSDI permanently due to Changing economy due to COVID/Poverty
Dear Congressmen, Congresswomen, Vice President and the President; All of our government bodies and people: I propose that we should raise SSI/SSDI to a more suitable monthly benefit, due to inflation, economic needs, to sustain better housing for our health and well being. Most people want monthly checks until the pandemic ends, but poverty will not end when COVID-19 does. Poverty needs to be addressed as the main pandemic problem. 1. The poverty level in my city starts at $1500. SSI usually starts at $794, which we know we are blessed to receive. 3. The overall stimuluses do not help long term, because when the slump happens (usually three or four months after the last one) people are again grasping at straws. You can not use the stimulus to move, because even if it helps with moving costs, it will still cost too much by the month to pay without a higher payment. 4. Most rural or sub-burban towns do not have proper government or HUD housing for rent on a adjusted low income. Renters are faced with living with abusive people or relatives or places where there are health concerns, bugs, mold, and other problems including drugs and crime. 4. People need more money on a monthly basis which will get them up out of the hole, they can afford better housing, better health and choices. Run down low income housing promotes drug using and criminal activity. 5. This administration is about equality for all. Asians, African Americans, etc. Why can we not address the problem of social security and low income living? 6. If you receive just $794 a month, please see this FAQ sheet on moderate housing: $35 application fees, $250 utility deposits or higher, $rent the same as a deposit ($600, $400 or higher for one bedroom, $750/$400 for two people.) Waiting lists at government approved low income housing or HUD takes forever. How to speed up the processes? 7. If you can raise EBT or SNAP at state levels, why can we not do the same for SSI/SSDI? This is a real issue, and needs to be addressed. Create a housing voucher program that pays for a lower income rent due to a SSI/SSDI renter or VA, people with handicaps and disabilities. Let it be paid by tax dollars of the upper income due to a national or state lottery or grant, let it be a tax credit. Perhaps, Medicaid can help pay for the housing, due to it being a health concern as well as mental health concern. The mental health of a renter is the number one reason why low income housing fails us. If doctors can write a prescription for a wheel chair, why can they not write one for a better rented location? 8. Even after COVID ends, as the great depression shows us from history, there will still be economic fallout and stress for years into 2045 and beyond. 9. I am asking others to sign this petition so that we can usher in great change in Equality for all, black, white, etc. We can't all Rise up together equally if we are not included in the Equality for all. Your name and issues matter.

  • Chuck Brown "The Godfather of GoGo" For Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame
Chuck Brown was born on August 22, 1936, in Gaston, North Carolina. He was a guitarist and singer who is affectionately called "the Godfather of go-go." Go-go is a subgenre of funk music developed in and around Washington, D.C., in the mid- and late-1970s. While go-go's musical classification, influences, and origins are debated, Brown is regarded as the fundamental force behind the creation of go-go music. Brown was considered a local legend in Washington, D.C., and appeared in television advertisements for the Washington Post and other area companies. The D.C. Lottery's "Rolling Cash 5" ad campaign features Chuck Brown singing his 2007 song "The Party Roll" in front of various D.C. city landmarks, such as Ben's Chili Bowl. Brown was the subject of "Chuck Brown's Long Dance," the cover article in the Washington Post Magazine on October 4, 2009. He received his first Grammy Award nomination in 2010 for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals for "Love" (with Jill Scott and Marcus Miller), from the album We Got This. In 2009, the 1900 block of 7th Street NW, in Northwest Washington, D.C., between Florida Avenue and T Street was renamed "Chuck Brown Way" in his honor. On September 4, 2011, Brown was honored with a free concert on the West Lawn of the Capitol by the National Symphony Orchestra, as the NSO paid tribute in its Legends of Washington Music Labor Day concert featuring Brown's music, as well as Duke Ellington's and John Philip Sousa's. Brown and his band capped off the evening with a performance. Brown's musical career began in the 1960s playing guitar with Jerry Butler and The Earls of Rhythm, joining Los Latinos in 1965. At the time of his death, he was still performing music and was well known in the Washington, D.C., area. Brown's early hits include "I Need Some Money" and "Bustin' Loose." "Bustin' Loose" has been adopted by the Washington Nationals baseball team as its home-run celebration song and was interpolated by Nelly for his 2002 number-one hit "Hot in Here." Brown also recorded go-go covers of early jazz and blues songs, such as "Go-Go Swing," Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing," "Moody's Mood for Love," Johnny Mercer's "Midnight Sun," Louis Jordan's "Run Joe," and T-Bone Walker's "Stormy Monday." He influenced other go-go bands, such as Big G and The Backyard Band, Rare Essence, Experience Unlimited (EU), Little Benny and the Masters, and Trouble Funk. The song "Ashley's Roachclip" from the Soul Searchers' 1974 album Salt of the Earth contains a famous drum break, sampled countless times in various other tracks. In the mid-1990s, he performed the theme music of Fox's sitcom The Sinbad Show which later aired on The Family Channel and Disney Channel. Sadly, Chuck Brown died of multiple organ failure (including heart failure or heart problems) on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was 75 years old. Several weeks prior to his death, he had postponed and canceled shows due to hospitalization for pneumonia. Because of his decades of musical influence and his dedication to music for over 30 years, Chuck Brown should be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
