We demand that as the members of Puerto Rico’s Financial Oversight Board draw up a new post-hurricane fiscal plan for the island, they must zero out its debt payments. Background: The Financial Oversight Board, put in control of Puerto Rico’s government budget by the federal PROMESA law, is preparing a new, post-hurricane fiscal plan for the island. The new plan must include zero debt payments to Wall Street and big banks, which have already taken billions in profit out of Puerto Rico. With zero payments, any aid that comes to the island and any fair and productive economic development plans can be put in service of the people. Hurricanes Irma and Maria left Puerto Rico in dire circumstances – decimating its electricity, water and telecommunications systems. This made conditions worse in on the island, whose people had already been suffering for years because of cuts to public services -- including closing more than 300 schools and reductions to health care budgets that left the island’s only pediatric hospital at risk of having its power shut down -- to serve its $72 billion debt. Puerto Rico cannot hope to recover from storm damage if its people are forced to pay Wall Street before taking care of their own needs. Puerto Rico’s economy will be unable to support working families unless it’s given a clean slate for its public debt. More aid, zero debt! I support legislation to prohibit fracking in California to protect our health and environment from this dangerous practice. Fracking, a rapidly spreading oil and gas drilling technique that threatens our water, air and climate, is associated with more than 1,000 instances of water contamination around the country; it also releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and other harmful air pollution. Fracking is already occurring in California with virtually no oversight by the state and no disclosure to the public. While state regulators have issued draft regulations to govern some aspects of the practice, the proposed regulations would keep fracking in California shrouded in secrecy and would provide little actual protection for the air we breathe, the water we drink or our communities. We have the opportunity to avoid the environmental damage that fracking for oil and gas has caused in other states. State legislatures in New York, New Jersey and Vermont have enacted bans or moratoriums on this inherently dangerous activity. California should follow their lead and prohibit fracking to protect our environment and health. Fracking exists to extract new sources of fossil fuels. Our climate is in imminent peril from CO2 pollution from fossil fuels. We must rapidly phase out fossil fuel extraction, and use, as we rapidly shift to clean, green renewable energy sources. Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy sources, and we will soon run out of them anyway! Why would we wait until it is too late? Please support legislation to ban fracking in California. Thank you.

Sprint is a horrible company. Customer Service repeatedly does not live up to its promises. Its coverage maps show they have coverage in areas their executives admit there is no coverage and won't be any time soon. Sprint does not honor its phones warranties when the manufacturer fails to honor them. Sprint will still charge you a repair fee on a brand new phone! They charge hidden fees such as phone "upgrade" fees. Why should we have to be charged additional fees just for the luxury of giving them money for a new phone? We can just as easily not buy a new phone, and we won't pay Sprint anything. Sprint wants to charge an additional $10/month for smartphones even though its data service sucks. I cannot even use the internet around town, and, when I can, it's slow. But, Sprint wants more money for that. Once, the Flint, MI Sprint store improperly activated my smart phone. There was no data on it for a month, yet Sprint still charged me for a full month of smart phone service! Sprint continues to torture and kill animals by sponsoring cruel rodeos which are in the same category as dog fighting. Sprint's customer service representatives and executive customer service representatives act like they do not want customers' business. It is time for Sprint to either stop figuring out ways to "get" its customers or just go out of business.

In a time when residents are fleeing NY, the most highly tax state in the union, when people are losing jobs and pensions because of massive budget deficits, the power brokers and special interest groups are trying to ram through a larger $5 to $15 billion replacement bridge that we can’t afford and do not need, to be paid for with borrowed funds, thereby giving rise to increased taxes for New York residents. JOBS? “NOT ALL THE UNEMPLOYED ARE IN THE CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS.” Jobs will be doled out to the lowest bidder, pulling most workers from out of state. THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION DETERMINED THE BRIDGE TO BE SAFE. Restoring the current bridge is our MOST AFFORDABLE OPTION with the LEAST NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT on our communities and the river. THIS REPLACEMENT BRIDGE WILL SUBJECT RESIDENTS TO 5 to 10 YEARS OF CONSTRUCTION, WILL NOT IMPROVE TRAFFIC FLOW, and WILL REDUCE AIR QUALITY, ALREADY OUT OF COMPLIANCE WITH EPA STANDARDS, EVEN FURTHER. In the wake of the most recent 6-1 decision in favor of Supt. Barbara Thompson's ridiculous recommendation to close neighborhood schools in low income predominantly Black communities we stand in solidarity to have this decision rescinded. Haunted by history in the most recent decision by Board members;Charlotte Meadows,Eleanor Dawkins, Mary Briers, Melissa Snowden, Heather Sellers, and Beverly Ross, is a troubling sign of genocide of the Black Community. Parents, Guardians and Advocates spent time during the public forums in the last few months in heated debates regarding a new redistricting, consolidation, closing of schools recommendation to essentially provide more financial resources to eradicate a new East High School. The premise is to close schools within the low income communities to create a new high school in the more affluent community located in the East Montgomery which is more populated by Whites. Subsequently, this inconsistent fiscally irresponsible plan focuses on “neighborhood schools”, essentially resegregating the schools by socioeconomic status and race based on what the “demographics” reflect. In addition, the Superintendent’s recommendations would increase the number of magnet schools, again causing the disparity between magnet and traditional student enrollment. Letters have been disseminated throughout the City notifying the reassigned schools for students based on the illogical recommendations. Several letters and calls from State Legislators exemplify the irrationality of the closing of schools. What they have projected as critical is NOT! They have not asked for Money. The members of the New York Technology Educators Network, (comprised of technology leaders in the Lower Hudson Valley of New York) ask all G-Suite educational institutions, administrators, and teachers and to support this petition: Please stop the Google for Education Team from making insensitive and short-sighted changes that affect the school districts that heavily rely on them. 1. Stop the increase of Google Enterprise! Google for Education has decided to double the cost of the G-Suite enterprise by the end of October. Taking such action during a global pandemic COVID-19 is insensitive to educational institutions' needs everywhere during a very vulnerable time. It's also contrary to Google's collaborative nature many of us technology leaders have espoused our districts. 2. Do not retire the Google Level 1 & 2 Proficiency exams! Additionally, Google has just announced that the Certification Exams are being retired at the end of December. Once again, technology leaders worldwide have invested in Level 1, Level 2 training exams. We have spent thousands with slender pockets getting teachers to take these exams, and now they will be obsolete? We must now tell our teachers that all the work they have done to obtain them will mean nothing after December, but wait, now there are new badges? By all means, add to your badges or update the outdated tests, but do not nullify all the work and good-faith placed in the former exams.
