Stop Slumlords

Dear City Officials!
We hope this letter finds you well. We are writing as concerned residents and members of the Jersey City community to bring to your attention the worsening issue of slumlords in our city—particularly in areas where tenants are being forced to live in unsafe, unsanitary, and unacceptable conditions.
We are a family of five—just trying to live, love, and raise our children in peace. But for far too long, we’ve been forced to endure horrible living conditions because of neglect and inaction from our landlords at Stonegate.
Our plumbing has been broken for weeks—leaks, unsanitary water—and despite our calls, emails, and desperate pleas, nothing has been done. We’ve had to make do, clean up constant messes, and pray our children don’t get sick from simply living in the place we call home.
This is not just about inconvenience. It’s about dignity. It’s about safety. It’s about children who deserve better. We pay rent like everyone else. We deserve to be heard. We deserve repairs. We deserve to live in a home, not a hazard.
Stonegate, do better. Fix the plumbing. Do your job.
I respectfully urge your office to:
- Investigate repeated violations by known negligent landlords and property management companies.
- Increase enforcement of existing housing codes and tenant protection laws.
- Create stronger penalties for landlords who fail to provide basic services such as heat, electricity, and sanitation.
- Offer additional support to tenants dealing with retaliation or intimidation for speaking out.
We need leadership that prioritizes the well-being of all Jersey City residents, not just those who can afford luxury developments. I ask you to stand with your constituents and take swift, public action to hold slumlords accountable and protect tenants.
Thank you for your time and your service to our city. I look forward to your response and to seeing meaningful action taken.
Sincerely,
Jersey City Tenant

Why is this important?
Because no one deserves to live in unsafe, unlivable conditions—especially when they’re paying rent. When we allow slumlords to get away with neglect and abuse, we’re not just hurting one tenant, we’re sending a message that people’s dignity and basic needs don’t matter.
This campaign isn’t just about me—it’s about all of us. It’s about standing up for families, seniors, single parents, working people—anyone who has ever felt ignored, disrespected, or trapped by a landlord who refuses to do the right thing.
When we come together and raise our voices, we shift power back to the people. We make it known that we will not be silent, and we will not settle for less than what we deserve: safe, clean, and humane housing.
This is more than a complaint—it's a call to action. I’m asking others to join me because change doesn't happen alone—it happens when we show up together.
How it will be delivered
We will share the petition publicly on social media and tag local housing advocates, media outlets, and city officials to amplify the message and demand accountability.
