Demand NEIU To Allow Students to OPT-OUT of Extra Fees
.jpg)
NEIU is robbing students of their right to choose by charging students "mandatory fees," outside of their tuition, regardless of whether or not the fees apply to their education or each student’s unique needs.
These fees keep piling up! From online course fees, to recreation fees, and parking fees. Students are automatically expected to pay them, rather than choosing whether they want to opt into those services.
Also, can someone explain what the hell an "online course fee" covers?
Deeming these fees mandatory is highly unfair to the average student. NEIU leverages these fees' "mandatory" status to hide their arbitrary nature. These fees add to a student’s loan balance while giving them no choice despite the fact that it comes out of their pockets. If these fees were necessary, why weren't they included in the tuition? Why isn't it considered an optional donation? Why isn't it based on the specific financial needs of each student? Why doesn’t a student have an option in the first place if it’s costs them outside of their tuition? We believe that the term “mandatory” provides NEIU with a convenient loophole that forces students into paying NEIU more out of pocket. What is stopping NEIU from piling on fee after fee? The university has already deprived us of our ability to choose for ourselves.
As a student, I feel exploited, I feel as if this is a cash grab, and it is highly unethical to expect students to front the bill for anything outside of their courses and tuition. For example, I am an Earth Science Major student; why should I pay for a Performing Arts Service? How can NEIU justify this as a mandatory fee for a STEM student when I have no intention of utilizing that service?
My point is that students should have a RIGHT TO KNOW not only what they are paying for, but should have the option to opt in or out of services based on whether it serves our education.
The use of the term mandatory is NEIU strong-arming the student body into paying out of pocket and losing out on finances that could go toward books, supplies, or other legitimate needs. The fact that these are labeled “fees” implies that this is outside the scope of our tuition, and by asserting their mandatory status, NEIU is making students feel like they are being robbed.
This message aims to demand NEIU for more transparency regarding student expenses at NEIU and to provide students with the option to opt out of irrelevant and arbitrary charges, remove its mandatory status, and give us our RIGHT TO CHOOSE TO BE FREE OF JUNK FEES OUTSIDE THE SCOPE OF OUR TUITION!

Why is this important?
This is about putting STUDENTS BEFORE PROFIT. Students should have the right to opt-out of irrelevant fees, and if you believe that mandatory fees are unethical, then please sign this petition.
This will save students unnecessarily high account balances, and prevent them from accumulating more debt in a time when the cost of living is already very high.

How it will be delivered
Whether these matters are addressed by the President, Dean, or University Board of Trustees or Board of Directors. I will make sure this is sent directly to those in charge so they can consider this change and put STUDENTS FIRST. Fees outside of tuition need to be OPTIONAL.
