To: The President and Vice President of the United States, The Supreme Court of the United States, State Governors, State and Federal Houses and Senates, any elected officials on the State and Federal level

Our Elected Officials need to Make the Grade!

 To Whom it May Concern-
Growing up in the United States, we all were taught about our democracy; the beginnings of it, how it works with its checks and balances to ensure that not one person is in more power than the other, the rules one must follow in order to create and pass laws that us as American citizens must follow in turn. Anyone with even the most basic of education in our nation's history can tell you the basics of how our government works and what our elected officials are supposed to do in order to keep that process going fairly and in the best interests of the people they are serving.
However, it seems that as of late, many elected officials, on both sides of the aisle, seem to have forgotten or are blatantly disregarding those principals and those rules in order to push their own personal agendas by:
  • Taking or accepting monetary value or gifts as a tactic to further certain legislations to be considered or passed (AKA: Bribery)
  • Passing laws on the state level that are forcing students to learn by the "standards" of certain ideologies or deities as well as introducing laws to do that on a national level, which is a blatant disregard of the Separation of Church and State.
  • Using religion or religious texts as reasoning behind supporting certain laws or legislation (again, disregarding Separation of Church and State)
  • The Supreme Court passing legislation that basically lets the President get away with any crime under the guise that it was for the betterment of the government, which is a gateway for the President to disregard the checks and balances that has been instilled since our country's inception to create executive orders which could make the president more of a monarch or even a dictator, thus starting the end of our democracy.
History has shown that these actions in other places of the world were catalysts for corrupt regimes, coups, dictatorships, and even wars that the United States have participated in (think World War II and the Third Reich if an example is needed).
To think that one seems to forget or not remember how their position in our government actually works is frightening, as American citizens and makes us question whether these people who hold so much power are capable and competent in our government.
It is with that, we, those signed, would like to require all elected officials in state and federal positions of government, as a requirement in order to hold office, to take and pass a basic U.S. Government exam.
They will be tested on:
  1. The constitution and its amendments, which includes the history of it and why these amendments are in place as well as what those amendments contain. Elected officials, especially in congress "cite" the constitution as reasoning behind legislation, but do they really know what's in it?
  2. The history of the U.S. government and its three branch system, which includes the history of our three branches of government and the checks and balances that are in place to ensure our democracy remains a democracy.
  3. How laws are made and the rules on making them, in order to ensure these laws are for the betterment of our country, and not for a singular person or party's agenda.
These tests will be administered and graded in public, for the American people to see fully in order to ensure 100% transparency and accountability as well as to make it as fair as possible as well as to minimalize any cheating. These tests will also be administered by normal, everyday educators, teachers or professors, to which our elected officials will not know who until they take the test, in order to eliminate any chance of tomfoolery with the tests or the grading. The grading from the educator will be checked again by another educator to ensure fairness and accountability, similar with peer to peer reviewing with medical research and findings.
Just like any test we took in school, they will receive a passing or a failing grade. Passing it will not only allow the elected official to hold office, it will also show the American people that this official is aware of what they need to do and will be held accountable if they veer from those principals. If they fail, the position will be offered to whoever was second in the polls in which they will also take and pass the test in order to hold office.
It's about time that our elected officials need to be held accountable for their actions while on our tax dollar dimes. They have vowed to not only serve the country and defend the constitution, but also to be a representative of the people that voted them in, a voice for their community, someone who is supposed to have the needs and best interests of their community at heart, and clearly, that seems to not be the case.
If immigrants who are coming into this country, in order to obtain citizenship, need to pass a test that many people who are natural born citizens have trouble passing, then this exam for our elected officials should be very easy for them to pass. That is, if they truly actually know what their job entails and how our government works.
It's about time that our elected officials needs to go back to school and be reminded of why they are there in the first place.
No bribery.
No tampering.
No lobbying.
No political mumbo jumbo.
We as a nation are at a crucial time in history and are facing our greatest test this election season.
It's pass or fail for us as a nation.
So let's make our elected officials start the process.

Why is this important?

It's simple.
We elected these officials into these positions of power in our government.
We voted them in to not only be a voice for the area they represent, but as a whole to keep our country going, to make and pass laws in order to better our lives as citizens of the US.
They literally have our lives in their hands every day when they go "do their job".
They need to be held accountable.
We need to know that they know what they are doing.
That they understand how all this works.
And in turn, understand what their job entails.
That they actually have a brain and knows how to use it.
Y'know, common sense and all that fun stuff.
They said they know what they are doing when they present and pass outlandish laws, so it's about time that they back that statement up.
