• MN Officials: Clean Energy, Ready for 100
Science and our health is being attacked by Trump's administration; it is a fact backed up by decades of scientific evidence that we must clean up the environment. If we do not make the choice to switch to clean energy now, our health and safety will decline rapidly and affect the rest of the world; we cannot afford to be selfish.

  • Oppose @AIPAC Bills Attacking Iran Deal & Palestinian Human Rights
Lobbyists with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee [AIPAC] are pressing Members of Congress to co-sponsor bills that attack the Iran nuclear agreement by imposing new sanctions on Iran [S.722 & H.R.1698] [1] and attack Palestinian self-determination by promoting Israeli settlements in the West Bank [S.720 & H.R.1697]. [2] S.722 would designate part of Iran's military as a terrorist organization, which would obstruct contact between the U.S. and Iranian militaries. U.S. military leaders have opposed this move on the grounds that it would undermine the U.S. fight against ISIS in Iraq. [3] S.720 & H.R.1697 would erase the distinction in U.S. law between Israel and Israeli settlements in the West Bank and make it illegal for U.S. companies to boycott or otherwise discriminate against Israeli settlements in the West Bank based on calls by the United Nations or the European Union. [4] Urge your Senators and Representative to oppose these bills by signing our petition. • Protect our immigrant neighbors - pass Senate Bill 54.
Every day we read about the effects of deportations and the threat of deportation faced by our immigrant neighbors: five-year olds too anxious to go to kindergarten; parents who must make "contingency" plans for their U.S. citizen children; crime victims and witnesses too frightened to call police; people afraid to go to the jobs they depend on to feed their families. We hear the stories and see the stress on the faces of the people we work with, who live on our block, the people we teach or go to school with, the families who worship alongside us. The California Values Act will ensure that state and local resources are not used to fuel mass deportations, separate families, or spread fear throughout our communities. Under the California Values Act, state and local law enforcement agencies and school police and security departments will not engage in immigration enforcement. No state or local resources will be used to investigate, detain, detect, report, or arrest persons for immigration enforcement purposes. And regardless of whether state or local resources are implicated, no state or local law enforcement agency will detain or transfer any person for deportation without a judicial warrant. Civic institutions that serve the public - like schools, health facilities, courthouses, and the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement- will remain safe and accessible to all California residents, regardless of immigration status. They will establish and publicize policies that limit assistance with immigration enforcement to the fullest extent possible consistent with federal and state law. Please sign this petition and ask your legislators and Gov. Brown to affirm California's values by enacting Senate Bill 54 into law.

  • Halt the Arkansas Mass Executions
I have worked with some of the inmates who are scheduled to be executed. They participated in a creative writing workshop I helped to lead between May and October, 2016. They committed heinous crimes in the past, and I grieve for the families of their victims, but there is NOTHING to be gained from the state's killing of them.

  • RESTORE NYSOFA FUNDING!
Many of my patients depend on NYSOFA funding and the critical services Erie County Senior Services provides. Cuts to this funding will put the health and well-being of thousands of Erie County seniors in jeopardy. I am writing to urge you to restore critical funding to The New York State Office for the Aging to protect vital services for older New Yorkers. These services keep costs down and ensure older New Yorkers remain as active and independent as possible at home in the community. Please restore the following budget items in the final, 2017-2018 New York State Budget: • Fully Restore New York Connects funding to The State Office for the Aging (SOFA) budget, and keep a dedicated, state-funded revenue stream in place to support NY Connects- serving more than 230,000 older New Yorkers and their families each year, with information and assistance on long term care options; • Restore the 25% county match exemption under the Community Services for the Elderly (CSE) Program to preserve local funding to operate home delivered meals, non-medical transportation, in homecare and case management services, services for the elderly, so they can remain independent at home; • Support an additional $24 million for Expanded In-Home Services for the Elderly Program (EISEP), in order to provide the 15,000 older New Yorkers on waiting lists statewide for EISEP services, such as case management and homecare; • Reject $7.4 million in proposed cuts for Direct Care Worker cost of living adjustments (COLA’s). This funding, enacted in 2015 to provide a wage increase to direct care workers who provide seniors with services such as personal care and bathing, is now slated for cuts because the funds weren’t adopted as anticipated, due to complications with worker identification. I am counting on you to advocate for and use your influence to help preserve these critical services for seniors in New York State. Thank you for your consideration and help with this important matter.

  • Support California legislation for healthy middle and high school start times.
The research is clear: adolescent sleep deprivation is directly linked to increased rates of depression, suicide ideation, drug and alcohol use, and car accidents. Sleep deprivation also undermines academic performance and increases tardies, absences and behavioral issues at school. And teen athletes who get inadequate sleep are more likely to get injured. The circadian rhythm shift of adolescence makes it difficult for the vast majority of teens to fall asleep early. When combined with too-early school start times, the result is sleep deprivation. As noted above, a start time of 8:30 a.m. or later has been shown to be the single best way to address this. To a large extent, school start times have been dictated by external factors such as bus schedules, and were established before researchers had identified the numerous risks of developmentally misaligned school hours. Healthy school start times are a public health issue and an academic issue. In California, only 21% of the state’s public middle and high schools meet the 8:30 a.m. healthy start time guideline – many start before 7:30 a.m., with students needing to wake at 6 a.m. or even earlier! We need to implement healthy start times for all of the 3-million-plus students in our public middle and high schools – not just those in districts willing to make the change of their own accord. • Congress: Pass health care for all
The wind is at our backs: Because of our grassroots pressure, House Speaker Paul Ryan pulled the disastrous Republican health care repeal bill—which would have taken away health insurance from more than 20 million Americans—from the House floor. This is a huge victory. But we can't stop here. Let's make it clear that the American public does want action on health care—to expand and improve on the ACA, not slash it and take it away. Every developed nation except the United States has universal health insurance. It's time to move forward. Senator Bernie Sanders is planning to introduce a bill that includes Medicare for All, a single-payer program that would cover all Americans and reduce the cost of care. Sanders and other Democrats are also pushing for action on prescription drugs and a public option. Tell your members of Congress to support legislation to protect and expand affordable health care access for millions of Americans.

  • Rep. Newhouse, Protect Our Internet Privacy on March 28th!
Everyone who uses the internet should be alarmed at the prospect of all our browsing and app activity being vacuumed up by the giant broadband internet providers. With only a simple majority, the Senate has already approved the rollback of internet privacy protections and the House of Representatives will vote on March 28th.
