  • Save the Election Assistance Commission
The White House as well as the House of Representatives are actively working to dismantle our voting system. The Election Assistance Commission is the only federal agency dedicated to upholding and advancing the integrity of voting equipment across our nation as well as securing the equipment against cyber attacks. Our right to vote and the integrity of our voting systems are important to every citizen. We should actively oppose any efforts to weaken our voting system.

  • Physical markers to designate sewage outflow areas
The Kudzu Coalition of West Alabama requests that the City of Tuscaloosa: 1. Physically post warning signs at all downstream affected public use and access areas including parks, boat launches, fishing piers, bridges, and trails 2. Post warnings within 12 hours of sewage spills on the City of Tuscaloosa’s website and social media sites stating the location of spill on map and the approximate time of spill. In addition, we would like to know if the spill is ongoing or has it stopped, size of spill, were there industrial chemicals from local industries, and which receiving streams were affected. After the spill, did water testing occur? If so, please post the results. 3. Publicly advertise and maintain an opt-in process that allows interested persons to obtain public notification of SSOs via email, text message, and/or automated phone call. Discharge points are located along numerous streams throughout Tuscaloosa County. Notices should be posted where sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) have been identified and on every waterway leading away from spill sites (For details on a recent spill, see Sewage spill in Tuscaloosa".) Given the number of accidental sewage spills over the past year, proper warning of potential discharge is necessary to protect children, small animals, and residents. Regular discharges, as well as spills, need to be clearly indicated at all times. We are grateful to City of Tuscaloosa staff as well as local legislators, councilors, and other stakeholders for addressing this much-needed issue. Water is beautiful. Playing in sewage effluent is not.

  • @POTUS: Seek Peace with Russia in Syria - As Advocated by @IgnatiusPost
As David Ignatius reported in the Washington Post, the United States and Russia successfully negotiated agreement on a buffer zone and "deconfliction line" in Syria. The agreement allows the United States and its allies to clear the Islamic State’s capital, Raqqa, while Russia and the Syrian government take the city of Deir al-Zour. The agreement on the line keeps the combatants focused on fighting the Islamic State, rather than fighting each other. [1] Ignatius says the U.S. and Russia should discuss whether this agreement is a model for wider U.S.-Russian cooperation in Syria to defeat the Islamic State, stabilize Syria, and discuss a political future. Working with Russia, Ignatius says, may be the only way to reduce the violence in Syria and create a foundation for a more decentralized nation that can recover from its tragic war. Secretary of State Tillerson and Defense Secretary Mattis favor exploring options with Russia, Ignatius notes. "We see the potential for it," a senior State Department official said. "So far Russia is working in earnest with us on the effort." Some "hawks" in the National Security Council and Congress don't want to work with Russia, even if that is the only way to reduce the violence in Syria. But the likely alternative to working with Russia in Syria is more violence and more casualties for U.S. troops. A recent academic study attributed Donald Trump's victory in November to communities hit hardest by military casualties and angry about being ignored. [2] Urge President Trump and Members of Congress to support a wider agreement with Russia on Syria to reduce violence and protect U.S. troops by signing our petition. • Extend Medicare To All Americans
Both major parties have struggled trying to re-invent a new type of healthcare coverage that achieves certain goals when a mutually agreed upon healthcare coverage method already exists! It needs to be extended to all qualified Americans. The basics will automatically be covered, but leaves room for supplimentary coverages through private carriers.

  • Senate’s Health Care Repeal: You Pay More, You Get Less and the Wealthy Get Big Tax Breaks
Senate’s Health Care Repeal: You Pay More, You Get Less and the Wealthy Get Big Tax Breaks The Senate’s repeal bill makes health care so much worse for so many people in so many ways, all to give huge tax breaks to the wealthy and big corporations, that it simply can’t be fixed. People have rejected repeal. Instead of cutting backroom deals, Republican Senators should start working with Democrats to keep what works and fix what doesn’t in the current law. You pay more and get less - that’s the Senate health care repeal bill. It makes health care worse for everyone - it raises costs, cuts coverage, weakens vital protections and ends Medicaid as we know it.

  • Protect the Great Lakes from an oil pipeline spill
Every day 64-year-old pipelines push nearly 23 million gallons of oil through the heart of the Great Lakes. What if they ruptured? These aging pipelines, called Line 5, are owned by Canadian company Enbridge and lie exposed in the water at the bottom of the Straits of Mackinac, where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet. A spill here would be catastrophic. Another Enbridge pipeline ruptured in Michigan in 2010 and spilled 1 million gallons of heavy crude oil into the Kalamazoo River. It was the largest land-based oil spill in U.S. history, and is took years to clean up. Enbridge's Line 5 pipeline through the Great Lakes is 15 years older than that one was when it ruptured. PIPELINES FAIL. THESE AGING PIPELINES IN THE STRAITS ARE NOT WORTH THE RISK. WE NEED YOU TO HELP PREVENT A DISASTER. Michigan should not put the Great Lakes, our economy, health, drinking water, fisheries, and way of life at risk from a catastrophic oil spill any longer. Michigan's year-long study of Line 5 alternatives has been released and the state is gathering public comment. Now is the time to submit your comment calling for the only way to truly protect the Great Lakes from an oil spill: shut down the Enbridge Line 5 pipelines through the Straits of Mackinac.

  • Legalize Marijuana in Wisconsin to Cover Transportation Shortfall
Our state currently faces a $1B shortfall in our transportation budget. The current mood seems to favor toll roads, but we would argue that legalizing marijuana, and taxing it appropriately, would provide far more income to the state among the numerous other benefits that legalization would bring. One only needs to look to legal states that are benefiting from the novelty tourism, the reduction in opiate use and related deaths, the reduction in drug related crimes and the massive influx of money and jobs associated with this new industry. If we do it now, we can ride the wave of novelty and beat states like Illinois and Minnesota to the punch. If we are too late, we will lose out on BILLIONS of dollars, if not more.

  • Tell the Forest Service not to build roads through old growth forests
I am starting this petition because naively, I believed that old growth was sacred and that the forest service would never build roads or log in such a precious place. At a recent field trip looking at a huge logging project in Western Montana, I asked the economist if they would build roads through old growth. He said yes without batting an eye. I also discovered that they are running roads in old growth and a known Goshawk nesting sight in another project. I thought the Forest Service was a steward of the forest. I thought they wanted to care for it and protect it. But instead, the Montana forests are forced to produce board feet based on logging mandates made by politicians and timber lobbyists. So they must get it in any and every way possible which includes destroying old growth.
