• Eliminate Systemic Pesticides from Food Crops
There are no long term safety studies that prove systemic pesticides are safe for humans and feed animals. Certain studies done in other countries have shown harm from these chemicals to animals, however, we in the US do no independent studies outside of those done by the companies with vested financial interests in the products. Such use/practices call for the Precautionary Principle to stop such use until studies and peer review of the studies can take place.

  • Tell PepsiCo to stop fueling its massive truck fleet with the world's most climate-polluting oil!
The dirtiest, most polluting oil in the world comes from the Canadian tar sands. The hydrocarbons in tar sands have to go through extreme processing to be turned into oil. Extracting and refining a barrel of oil from tar sands produces up to three times more carbon pollution than producing a barrel of conventional oil. So what does this have to do with PepsiCo? PepsiCo is the largest food and beverage company in the U.S., and as such, possesses one of the nation’s largest private truck fleets. Tens of thousands of trucks are required to move its diverse array of household brands--including Pepsi, Frito-Lay, Quaker Oats, Tropicana, Aquafina, Naked Juice, Gatorade and more. And PepsiCo is increasingly relying on tar sands to fuel its fleet. Nineteen big companies, including Walgreens, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, have committed to not use tar sands oil, and we’d like PepsiCo to do the same. Companies that are major oil consumers should ensure that their truck fleets are rapidly moving toward the use of alternative fuels and electrification, not creating economic incentives for the extraction of tar sands! U.S. companies with large truck fleets can send a strong market signal to oil refiners by refusing to purchase the most dangerous and polluting sources of oil. While trucks make up only 7% of the vehicles on the road, they consume 35% of the nation’s fuel. If the nation’s largest truck fleets refrain from using tar sands oil, it will help reduce the demand for it. Giant, highly profitable companies like PepsiCo---that rely on kids and families to purchase their products--should chose to transport their products with trucks powered by the cleanest fuels available. PepsiCo should not be running one of America's largest private truck fleets with the world's most climate and air polluting oil. Thank you for taking action!

  • Tell The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to Protect the Threatened Monarch Butterfly
Monarch butterflies are one of the most beautiful and iconic insects in the world, and they are in serious trouble. The monarch butterfly population in North America has been shrinking at an alarming rate. Why? A major culprit is the use of herbicides like Monsanto’s Roundup on genetically engineered (GE) crops, which is destroying a significant portion of their breeding habitat. That’s why Center for Food Safety and Center for Biological Diversity have just co-filed a groundbreaking legal action—joined by Xerces Society and renowned monarch scientist Prof. Lincoln Brower—to list the monarch butterfly as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). If listed, the U.S. government would be required to take urgent and significant action to protect monarchs from further declines. Sign the petition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) in support of protecting monarchs under the ESA! We all know that Monsanto’s genetically engineered crops and the pesticides they promote can wreak havoc on our farms, food, and environment. But what many people may not know is that they are also playing a big role in the rapid disappearance of monarchs. Herbicides like Roundup don’t kill monarchs directly, but rather kill their primary food source and habitat. Milkweeds are critical to the monarch’s survival because they are the only plants monarch caterpillars will eat. But thanks to the rampant use of Roundup on Monsanto’s genetically engineered crops, milkweed plants in the heart of the monarch’s range have been demolished. Fewer milkweeds mean fewer Monarchs. So we are faced with a historic choice: Do we want Monsanto or monarchs? It is becoming increasingly clear that we cannot have both. To protect monarchs we must protect and reclaim their critical habitat, and reject Monsanto’s Roundup Ready GE crops, and the unsustainable, pesticide-intensive, industrial agriculture system promoted by them. Though there are some good voluntary programs to restore milkweeds and protect monarchs, there are no mandatory regulatory mechanisms that adequately protect the monarch butterfly. Listing monarchs under the ESA will ensure that these iconic butterflies get the protection they need. Join CFS in urging the FWS to protect monarch butterflies!

  • Rep. Mike Burns: Help Save Our Arctic
I am starting this petition because I believe that silence is consent, and I am not okay sitting back and saying nothing while such a wondrous and untouched part of our planet is destroyed. There is NO going back once it's done, this is something we have to stand up for NOW.

  • Rick Scott, repeat after me: "climate change"
Governor Rick Scott has previously dodged climate change by stating that he is "not a scientist." And when he unveiled his transparent "Let’s Keep Florida Beautiful" campaign, there was one glaring omission: the phrase "climate change." It's not Beetlejuice; it's not Voldemort. What would appear if he said "climate change" three times? Common sense? Gov. Scott has now had a meeting with climate scientists where evidence and solutions were presented -- he no longer has any excuse. Get the governor to stop dodging and announce his administration's plan to combat climate change.

  • Tell Scott Brown to renounce Big Oil’s money
During his days in Washington, Scott Brown’s priorities were clear. He voted three times to protect special tax breaks worth billions of dollars to his friends in Big Oil, while taking more oil and gas money than all but two of his Senate colleagues. In total, he has collected nearly half a million dollars from the oil and gas industries. Now, the Koch brothers are trying to send him back to the Senate. They have spent over three million dollars on attack ads against Brown’s opponent, Senator Jeanne Shaheen. Tell Scott Brown to renounce the Koch brothers’ money that’s supporting his campaign and start taking action on climate change.

  • Protect democracy and stop the slaughter of wolves in Michigan!
Recently, the Michigan Senate voted on to allow hunting of wolves. The vote is a direct threat to these precious wild creatures and democracy. The Senate’s approval now sends the measure to the state House. If lawmakers pass the legislation, it will automatically become law. If they reject it or do nothing, the issue will go on the November general election ballot allowing citizens to oppose wolf-hunting. Gray wolves once numbered 2 million in North America, ranging across most of the continent. But they were nearly wiped out everywhere a generation ago, not least in Michigan. By the time the gray wolf was listed as endangered under federal law in 1974, there were only six left there. However, the species has managed a steady comeback, reaching a current population of more than 600 in Michigan. The survival of wolves will be in the hands of individuals and institutions guided solely by self-interest and profit, if the legislature refuses to let the voters have a say. Also, what could go on the endangered list are democracy and citizens' faith in government. There has never been a single record of a wolf attack on a human in Michigan. In fact, wolves are fearful of people, and avoid them. This leaves only one motive: killing wolves merely for sport, thrill, out of hatred, and for trophies -- which is what brought wolves to the brink of extinction in the first place. Wolves are not nearly the threat to humans as some of us humans are to our own humanity. If you believe in protecting biodiversity and democracy, sign this petition to stop the slaughter of wolves in Michigan.

  • Tell President Obama: Ban bee-killing pesticides
The Obama Administration has launched a new initiative to protect bees and other pollinators, which emphasizes public education, research and habitat expansion. But this effort falls far short of what's needed. The plan fails to take definitive action on neonicotinoid pesticides -- a key factor contributing to bee die-offs and one they could do something about now. Tell President Obama he needs to take strong and immediate action to save bees and ban bee-killing pesticides now!
