• DiaspoRicans/DiaspoRiqueños Declaration to exempt Puerto Rico from Application of the United Stat...
Of all North American possessions and territories, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is the only jurisdiction where all the restrictions as to movement of cargo on American built, crewed and US citizen owned, as established in the Laws of Cabotage in the Jones Act, completely apply. This results in costs 2.7 times what we would pay for food and medicines, clothing, materials and other imported products were they transport on ships on the international market. If the Jones Act were repealed or Puerto Rico exempted, our expenses would be reduced by an estimated 40%. There is broad consensus in Puerto Rico for the elimination of the Cabotage Laws.

  • Every presidential candidate should champion paid family (maternity/paternity/medical) leave!
One in four employed mothers in the United States is back at work just TWO WEEKS after giving birth because she doesn’t have access to paid family (maternity, paternity, medical) leave. This is totally unacceptable! Lack of paid family leave is devastating for working families AND for our national economy. In fact, study after study shows that advancing this policy is not only the right thing to do for new parents, it’s also the economically smart thing to do for businesses, taxpayers, and the economy. That’s why almost all countries in the world have this critical policy already in place. It’s time for the United States to catch up. Anyone looking to lead our country should show leadership now by championing and supporting a national paid family leave policy. Sign on to this petition, and MomsRising will make sure that every major candidate in the 2016 race for President of the United States gets the message.

  • Stop Governor Haslam
Our state is NOT for sale. Mr. Haslam states that outsourcing will offer a lower operating costs and more efficiency. Take a look at for-profit prisons and see how well that is working. This RFI https://www.tn.gov/assets/entities/generalservices/cpo/attachments/RFI_32110-16200_FMO.pdf was posted on August 1 with a response date of August 21. This is an incredibly short amount of time given to respond unless you know WHO will be awarded the contract. Quoting United Campus Workers, this proposal "includes every person, and every job, for every building everywhere (in Tennessee). Haslam wants to outsource our safety, health, and education to some for-profit, out-of-state company. All of the maintenance, all of the purchasing, all of the utilities, all of the human resources, all of the security, all of the cleaning, all of the administrative work in our schools, our courtrooms, our service agencies. It will hurt everyone." Shame on you, Mr. Haslam. Our state deserves better.

  • Tell these Democrats to Get Off the Fence and Support the Iran Deal
The United States, Iran and five other world powers announced an historic deal to dramatically curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for easing international sanctions on Iran. It’s a great agreement for the United States, but Republicans are already trying to sabotage it and put us back on the path to confrontation and war with Iran. You know the Republicans' answer to everything is more boots on the ground — putting ever more Americans in harm's way. That’s why we need to speak out right now and urge Democrats to support diplomacy. Some Democratic US Senators have not made a decision on the deal yet. Tell these Democrats: It's time to get off the fence. Don’t help Republicans sabotage the Iran agreement and risk another war. The truth is, Republicans don’t want diplomacy to work. Just as they did in Iraq, the only thing they know is pouring more gasoline on the fire, instead of trying to put the fire out. We can’t let them start another war. President Obama will veto any legislation that would blow up this agreement. Sadly, however, some Democrats in Congress have shown a willingness to back Republicans’ efforts to sabotage diplomacy. We need Democrats on record to stand with the President, to beat back any efforts to blow up diplomacy. Tell Democrats: It's time to get off the fence. Don’t help Republicans sabotage the Iran agreement and risk another war.

Some inmates are rehabilitated and should be returned to their community. The aging population of prisoners could be decreased by allowing good time served to be counted toward their sentences.

  • Stop using ROUNDUP along our state highways
The toxicity of ROUNDUP has been well documented. The state DOT literally hosed down either side of my road, including private property like mine. I now have dying plants. As my property is on a steep incline towards the river, this chemical will also enter our beautiful watershed and river.

  • Hawai'i PUC: Say NO to the NextEra Takeover
NextEra is seeking permission to buy HEI, which includes the HECO, MECO and HELCO utilities in Hawai'i. NextEra is primarily a nuclear and natural gas utility that has actively campaigned against rooftop solar in Florida. They give million$ to climate change deniers like Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush. NextEra put roadblocks in the way of moving to more renewable and cheaper electricity in Florida, leaving it 13th in solar even though Florida is third in potential. Don't believe them when they say they'll fix the grid - their solution will be to put even more impediments to rooftop solar - they have no experience in running a grid with distributed energy like Hawai'i has.

  • Twitter: Don't cover for politicians!
Twitter recently blocked a number of sites, including dedicated to archiving politician's tweets from accessing its API. This effectively shut these sites down. What elected officials say publicly to their constituents ought to remain part of the public record. Twitter shouldn't help politicians paint more favorable images of themselves or cover up their mistakes. This is like letting politicians erase footage or shred documents that make then look bad. Urge Twitter to stand for transparency and accountability by restoring API access to these sites.

  • No Iran Deal Opponents in Dem Administration
More Democrats are stepping up to support the Iran nuclear deal. [1] But Sens. Cory Booker and Mark Warner, who may be considered for vice president, are not yet counted as yes. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders support the Iran deal, and Martin O’Malley has offered cautious praise. They should pledge not to pick running mates who oppose it. [2] They should also pledge not to appoint Iran deal opponents to confirmation-level positions; and Senate Democrats should pledge to oppose Senate confirmation for Iran deal opponents. Some Senate Democrats like Chuck Schumer and Robert Menendez have already joined Republicans in pushing for war. Ron Wyden, who has been good on Iran diplomacy in the past [3] and bad in the past [4], is now counted by the Washington Post as “leaning no” on the Iran deal. [5] Democrats fear that Gary Peters’ chief of staff may push him to oppose the deal. [6] Alan Grayson, who is running for Senate in Florida, is counted by The Hill as “leaning no,” while Tammy Duckworth, who is running for Senate in Illinois, is counted as “unclear/undecided.” [7] Urge Democratic Presidential candidates and Senate Democrats to draw a line in the sand against Iran deal opponents by signing our petition. • Stand against pesticide pollution of our water
The Senate committee charged with protecting our environment just passed a bill that would make it a lot easier to spray pesticides in and around our rivers, lakes, and streams. The bill should be called "The Contaminate Waters at Will Act” since it eliminates the need for permitting to spray pesticides into our waterways. The documented health hazards and loss of wildlife attributed to pesticides are the exact reason why businesses and industries are required to obtain permits to spray in and around bodies of water. Please tell your senators to stand against this reckless action now.
