• Stop Insurance Companies From Wasting Patient Care Dollars on Luxury Suites and Corporate Bonuses
Blue Shield's purchase of a multi-million dollar executive skybox in an NFL stadium is only the recent example of healthcare insurers cheating California patients and taxpayers out of millions of taxpayer dollars. As a result of its non-profit status, Blue Shield is avoiding California's corporate income tax. This generous tax-break, on top of millions of dollars from rising premium rates, contributes to massive surpluses for non-profit insurers. Blue Shield, for example, built a reserve that is $3.68 billion – or 1667% – more than what’s required by state law. On top of that, we’ve seen the healthcare industry spiral out of control for years, with immense increases in premium rates, and with no one in California with power to stop them. That is why voters put Proposition 45 on the November ballot -- to help curb out of control premium increases by requiring healthcare companies to get approval for rate hikes. And if passed, Prop 45 will give the California insurance regulators the power to block excessive rate increases, like the ones that helped funded Blue Shield’s 49er skybox. But before November, only the Attorney General has the authority to hold insurers accountable and protect patient care. That is why it is on us to urge Attorney General Harris to take action immediately.

  • Assemblymember Nazarian: Our Democracy Depends on Your Vote
California can turn the tide on unlimited secret money in elections by passing the California DISCLOSE Act, a measure that will reveal the shadowy interests that try to buy elections with deceptive ads. The California DISCLOSE Act (SB 52) would bring true transparency, requiring ballot measure ads to clearly show their actual three top funders on the ads themselves – so Californians know who’s trying to buy their vote. The bill is close to passing, but now some of the biggest interests in Sacramento are trying to kill it. Assemblymember Nazarian will be a key vote. • Tell The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to Protect the Threatened Monarch Butterfly
Monarch butterflies are one of the most beautiful and iconic insects in the world, and they are in serious trouble. The monarch butterfly population in North America has been shrinking at an alarming rate. Why? A major culprit is the use of herbicides like Monsanto’s Roundup on genetically engineered (GE) crops, which is destroying a significant portion of their breeding habitat. That’s why Center for Food Safety and Center for Biological Diversity have just co-filed a groundbreaking legal action—joined by Xerces Society and renowned monarch scientist Prof. Lincoln Brower—to list the monarch butterfly as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). If listed, the U.S. government would be required to take urgent and significant action to protect monarchs from further declines. Sign the petition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) in support of protecting monarchs under the ESA! We all know that Monsanto’s genetically engineered crops and the pesticides they promote can wreak havoc on our farms, food, and environment. But what many people may not know is that they are also playing a big role in the rapid disappearance of monarchs. Herbicides like Roundup don’t kill monarchs directly, but rather kill their primary food source and habitat. Milkweeds are critical to the monarch’s survival because they are the only plants monarch caterpillars will eat. But thanks to the rampant use of Roundup on Monsanto’s genetically engineered crops, milkweed plants in the heart of the monarch’s range have been demolished. Fewer milkweeds mean fewer Monarchs. So we are faced with a historic choice: Do we want Monsanto or monarchs? It is becoming increasingly clear that we cannot have both. To protect monarchs we must protect and reclaim their critical habitat, and reject Monsanto’s Roundup Ready GE crops, and the unsustainable, pesticide-intensive, industrial agriculture system promoted by them. Though there are some good voluntary programs to restore milkweeds and protect monarchs, there are no mandatory regulatory mechanisms that adequately protect the monarch butterfly. Listing monarchs under the ESA will ensure that these iconic butterflies get the protection they need. Join CFS in urging the FWS to protect monarch butterflies!

  • US Fish and Wildlife Service: Save Endangered Mexican Wolves
At last count, there were only 83 wild Mexican gray wolves, or lobos, in the U.S. and they need your help. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) recently proposed changes to the rule governing the reintroduction program for the critically endangered Mexican wolf. While provisions to increase the area where new wolves can be released and can roam are important, other proposed changes, such as allowing more killing of these endangered wolves and limiting protections, contradict what scientists say is necessary for the wolves’ recovery. Your signature and personal comments on this petition will be submitted as comments on the proposal and will help influence decision-makers to save these wonderful animals before it's too late.
