• Protect and Uphold the Right to Religious Freedom
In 2010, a Waupaca County Courthouse judge signed an order requiring Susan Reed requiring her to raise her children in a Christian home. Susan Reed and her two children are Muslim and have been forced to practice their beliefs in secret. This is a violation of her and her children's First Amendment rights.

  • Assemblymember Bigelow: Don't Let Dark Money Hijack Democracy!
Since the disastrous Citizens United ruling, billionaires and other special interests are funneling record amounts of money through secretive non-profits, trying to buy our elections. Federal prosecutors even say that a foreign tycoon exploited loopholes to try to rig the outcome. This kind of dangerous secrecy must stop. S.B. 27 will make sure billionaires, foreign tycoons, and other special interests can't hide behind dark money non-profits. It requires any group spending $50,000 in California elections to reveal exactly who gave the money. It's a key step before passage of the California DISCLOSE Act (S.B. 52). Last month, Assemblymember Bigelow voted against an amendment to make S.B. 27 take effect in the November election. The final Assembly vote on S.B. 27 could come any day, and Assemblymember Bigelow needs to hear that constituents don't want him to let dark money hijack democracy!

  • STOP OR DRASTICALLY REDUCE THE GUNSHOT NOISE IN CHABOT REGIONAL PARKS
Residents of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties: Please support your neighbors who want to enjoy nature in Chabot Regional Parks and who live near the parks. They are being assaulted by the sound of gunfire to such an extent that they often cannot enjoy the parks or their homes and yards for hours at a time, especially on weekends. Support them by signing this petition. The lease of Chabot Gun Club to operate within Anthony Chabot Regional Park expires this year. The use of the park for environmental education and experiencing nature has expanded by leaps and bounds in the last many years, as has the number of neighbors near the park boundaries. While the gun range is a valuable resource for the law enforcement personnel and private gun owners who practice there, that use is basically and essentially inconsistent with the mission of urban-area parks such as the Chabot Regional Parks. Since over 95% of the users of the parks want an experience of the natural world, free of the explosive intrusion of gunshots, if a gun range is to continue to be operated in the park after the current lease expires, it must be under stringent restrictions on the noise levels and days and hours of operation. Any Request for Proposals for operation of a gun range in the park after the current lease expires must include conditions of use with specific limits on the decibel level of gunfire noise at designated points on certain hiking trails in the park and at stated points on the park boundary where it borders residential neighborhoods. The California Vehicle Code’s limits on vehicle noise may provide a starting place for developing the standards of tolerable noise levels, which certainly should be much lower in the heart of a large regional park than is allowed in our cities. If continued operation of a gun range is contemplated, a committee of park users and neighbors is willing to work with the Park District’s staff to develop the exact noise levels which may not be exceeded, the location of the designated points for noise measurement, the days and hours of operation, and the time line for implementation of noise mitigation.

  • For Campaign Finance Reform: We Thank Heather Mizeur and We Urge Brown, Gansler & Others To Join Her
We need a Governor who will not be beholden to wealthy special interests and can represent all Maryland citizens. We believe that the enormous amounts of money obtained by candidates from corporations and the wealthy corrupts our political process. We support the fight throughout the country to combat the challenge to our democracy presented by the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision which invalidated campaign finance reform legislation. [2] A letter, signed by a majority of members of the Maryland General Assembly in January 2012, called upon the Maryland Congressional Delegation to work for an amendment to the Constitution for free and fair elections and reversing that decision. [3] Currently before the General Assembly is legislation calling on Congress to call a Constitutional Convention to permit meaningful campaign funding reform. [4] Since Delegate Mizeur has voluntarily accepted the Maryland Campaign Finance restrictions, her primary campaign budget is limited to $2,586,124. She will also not accept contributions in excess of $250 and will only accept contributions from individuals (not corporations). [5] However both Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown and Attorney General Gansler have not yet chosen to abide by the Maryland campaign finance restrictions and avail themselves of the Maryland fund. Although both are better known throughout the state, they are planning primary campaigns that will spend in excess of 6 million dollars each. [6] We call on Anthony Brown and Douglas Gansler and all other candidates for governor to voluntarily accept the Maryland campaign fund limits. Please join Delegate Mizeur in conducting conduct a campaign that does not rely on contributions from wealthy donors and corporations. ------------------------------------------ [2] Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, 558 U.S. 310 (2010) [3] http://www.getmoneyoutmd.org/md_letter_for_traditional_amendment [4] Senator Jamie Raskin and 10 co-sponsors have introduced resolution SJ6, calling for an Article V Convention of the States. Ways and Means Chair Sheila Hixson and 26 co-sponsors have introduced the companion resolution HJ7 in the House of Delegates. [5] http://www.elections.state.md.us/campaign_finance/public_funding.html (The limit is based on contributions in excess of $50.) [6] As of the most recent reporting period Lt. Gov. Brown collected $5,393,572 last year and already has cash on hand of $7,013,647. Attorney General Gansler raised last year $1,673,050 and has cash on hand of. $6,268,967 http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/bal-governor-fundraising,0,5511370.photogallery?index=bal-governor-fundraising-003 Republican candidate Larry Hogan also intends to rely on the campaign fund. http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/blog/bs-md-hogan-public-financing-20140203,0,4299894.story However, as of the date of this petition no campaign finance report has been filed.

  • Ohio Cameras In Special Needs Classrooms
There have been many cases of abuse cover ups, abuse, neglect, restrained and injured, raped, and/or killed while in staff care. These children can not speak for themselves. Also, for the children's and staff safety and protection, if a staff member is falsely accused, they have a video to back their story up. If a child is being abused, it will be caught on cameras, and the abuser can be removed immediately. Cameras can save money on lawsuits because cameras will make the cases shorter. (Open and Shut cases) Cameras can also be a great teaching tool. Staff can go back and look closer on a child's behavior, see what may have caused it, and find ways to work with the child's need better. Parents can watch their children's education and know more about their child with special needs education. Tara Heidinger has gathered stories from all over the USA and more. This is her movement to build awareness. https://www.facebook.com/CamerasInSpecialNeedsClassrooms Congressional Candidate Noel Nazario is working closely with Tara Heidinger in helping her get this accomplished. Safety of the children and staff should be first priority.

  • Return scored PSSA tests to families and teachers so tests can be educationally useful.
Our kids are subjected to long state tests and hours of test preparation. Children are missing recess and arts programs are being cut to accommodate more test prep. The students diligently take these high stress, high stakes tests, and they never get an opportunity to review their specific performance. They merely receive a score six months later. What are these tests for if not to improve our children's educations?
