Stephen Miller wants Congress to quietly extend the government’s warrantless spying powers, calling the law that the FBI and NSA abuse to surveil Americans “critical.” At the same time, Trump and Pete Hegseth are demanding that tech companies give the government unrestricted use of their powerful AI programs for warmaking AND domestic surveillance of Americans. Federal law enforcement routinely abuses Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to search through the electronic communications of Americans without a warrant. A recent report shows that these searches rose by a whopping 35% at Kash Patel’s FBI. It would get even worse with the help of AI. Demand Progress led more than 90 organizations in a letter to Congressional leaders urging them to reject Stephen Miller’s push for a simple reauthorization of Section 702 before it expires on April 20. Law enforcement and intelligence agencies spy on Americans by abusing the data broker loophole, bypassing privacy rights by purchasing our sensitive information from data brokers. The backdoor search loophole allows law enforcement agencies to circumvent court orders and search through billions of communications for information about people in the United States. AI tools will give Trump, Miller, Patel, and Hegseth unprecedented capabilities to use these loopholes to violate the privacy of Americans. The original permit specifying that the facility will process petroleum soil was issued more than 30 years ago. We agree with the CEO that this does not reflect the full scope of ESMI/Clean Earth's current business. Therefore, it is logical that the company needs to either apply for a new permit or return to the original scope of work.  We disagree with the letter that the company's lawyers submitted to the ZBA in February demanding that this determination be revoked. The letter describes how the ESMI facility has gradually increased their scope to include the treatment of various materials including paper pulp, PCBs, sewage sludge and more. The letter asserts that all of these were reasonable extensions to the existing permit and have been allowed up to this point. They state that the original permit allows them to operate "without restriction", "without limitation" and ask why things should change now that the company is planning to add PFAS to the list of contaminants. The letter theorizes that the decision to suddenly impose a strict interpretation of the code is politically motivated and was prompted by "out of state environmental activists." This is simply not correct. We, the people who live here, pay taxes here, and raise our families here, agree with the Code Enforcement Officer's opinion and reject the reasoning of ESMI/Clean Earth. We request that the ZBA keep Fort Edward safe by denying this appeal. We believe that failing to do so would set dangerous precedent, undermine the authority of the village, and lead to possible harm to health and human safety.

For example, one expert explains how “if you use an Apple product, usually people increase prices because they assume that if you have an iPhone, you may have a higher income.” Washington Post readers deserve to know their privacy is protected, not exploited for profit. The Trump administration’s arrest and detainment of Juan demonstrates an escalation in their targeting of DACA recipients. Neighbors who have spent their entire lives in this country are now living in fear that they will be ripped away from the only home they know—their families and loved ones left behind. And as DACA applications are being delayed and ignored, many now fear that the legal channels they have been encouraged and told to go through will be instead used to track, target, and deport them. And they have reason to be worried: The administration has already deported 86 DACA recipients and 174 applicants. There are more than 500,000 DACA recipients in this country. Students, workers, parents, and neighbors who are important pillars of our community. We have to speak out now to demand not only Juan be brought home and reunited with his family, but to defend every DACA recipient and immigrant in this country against the rising abuse, harassment, and violence of this administration. Dolores Huerta is a towering figure in American labor and civil rights history and has been a relentless champion for the rights of farm workers. She played a pivotal role in labor protests throughout the 60s and 70s, including the Delano Grape Strike, a protest of more than 2 million Mexican and Filipino farm workers who fought against exploitation. She co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) an organization that eventually became what is known today as United Farm Workers (UFW). She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award, the Hispanic Heritage Award, the Puffin/Nation Prize for Creative Citizenship, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She also coined the iconic motto, "Sí se puede," a phrase now synonymous with workers' rights, civil rights, and immigration reform, that across the world is recognized as a call to action and a reminder that the impossible is possible. As March 31st is currently a federally recognized holiday known as Cesar Chavez Day, recent investigations allege that Cesar Chavez engaged in sexual abuse of minors Ana Murguía and Debra Rojas, in addition to Dolores Huerta herself. While Cesar Chavez has been widely recognized as the face of the farm workers' movement, Dolores Huerta's essential role as a co-founder, lead negotiator, and strategist to the movement has frequently been overshadowed in historical narratives. We should address the harm done, honor the survivors, and recognize the leader who Dolores Huerta continues to be today by honoring her monumental efforts which have bent the arc of history towards justice. The Trump administration initially spread misinformation about the deadly strike on an Iranian school, blaming the Iranian government. But preliminary findings have shown that the U.S. military was responsible for the devastating Tomahawk missile that killed children, teachers, and other civilians on February 28.  This is the consequence of Trump’s illegal war with Iran—and Secretary Hegseth’s reckless and irresponsible warmongering. Hegseth has warned that the U.S. military would rain “death and destruction from the sky all day long.” We can’t allow the glorification of war and violence to gloss over the atrocities being committed.  We have a responsibility to protect civilians during conflict and war. And our government has failed to do that.  There is no excuse for bombing children. Demand that the attack on the Shajarah Tayyebeh elementary school building be investigated immediately, and all those responsible be held responsible for their negligence and deadly failure of leadership.

Days ago, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth dangerously pledged “no quarter, no mercy for our enemies.” That would be a pledge to commit a crime. Just ask Senator Mark Kelly: "An order to give no quarter would mean to take no prisoners and kill them instead. That would violate the law of armed conflict. It would be an illegal order. It would also put American servicemembers at greater risk." While 13 U.S. troops have been confirmed killed and hundreds more reportedly wounded across seven countries, Hegseth has spent the last two weeks complaining that the media cared too much about dead U.S. servicemembers and boasting about raining “death and destruction from the sky” on people in Iran. Hegseth is making people less safe — and it’s time for him to go. Members of Congress are fed up, too, with 46 senators demanding answers from Hegseth over his involvement in the strike on a girls school in Iran. But they need to go further, and outrage from constituents like you can help push them there.

AT&T is a major company, bringing in $120 billion in revenue every year. It doesn’t need DHS’s contracts in order to remain profitable. But it’s choosing to maintain its ties with DHS despite widespread documentation of ICE’s abuse and civil rights violations. The reality is that ICE can’t execute its massive, ramped up deportation campaign on its own. It relies on technology companies for its intrusive surveillance and data and IT infrastructure. And it relies on AT&T for its high-speed network and special “first responders” priority access to voice and data.  ICE also uses AT&T for its “Data Analytics Service”—allowing ICE to tap into AT&T’s raw data and analysis of that data. Which means ICE can use that data to add to its massive database tracking Americans, a violation of our privacy and security. ICE and CPB’s inflated budget has enabled them to sow chaos and violence across the country, and they are just getting started.
