• Something Has to Change
So when someone is charged with a murder charge there are stipulations automatically set in place. For example, said individuals are not allowed to leave the state in which they were charged, not able to possess a weapon, and not allowed to possess drugs.

  • Tell Hyatt Hotels to Stop Hosting Hate
ACT for America has led “marches against Sharia” during Ramadan, falsely claimed that Islam is a “political ideology masquerading as a religion,” and that “no practicing Muslim can be a loyal American.” To make matters worse, while other major hospitality companies including Hilton, Airbnb, Sofitel, and the Willard Hotel refused to host hate groups and disassociated their organizations with bigots, Hyatt is welcoming ACT with open arms, and actively associating itself with dangerous anti-Muslim ideology. But we have the power to stop this. If we raise our voices, we can tell Hyatt loud and clear that we won’t stand for hate — not in our homes, not in our hotels, and not in our nation. Hyatt has “justified” hosting the conference by claiming it “does not unlawfully discriminate against groups who wish to hold lawful meetings at the hotel.” But Hyatt is distorting civil rights laws — there are no laws in Virginia or at the federal level that require a hotel to host a hate group like ACT for America.

  • Tell Congress: Don't privatize the United States Post Office
The U.S. Postal Service is the most popular government agency in the country, with a favorability rating of nearly 90 percent. But now, President Trump is bent on destroying it. This week, a task force led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House budget director Mick Mulvaney, is expected to endorse the privatization of the US Postal Service. If the US Post Office is privatized, rural communities would suffer the most. “If the goal of the Postal Service is to make as much money as possible,” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) told the Nation in June, “tens of millions of people, particularly low-income people and people in rural areas, will see a decline in or doing away with basic mail services.” Private companies won’t deliver to certain remote areas because it’s not profitable to do so, but the Postal Service is obligated to serve all Americans regardless of where they live. Please join with us and help stop the privatization of the US Post Office! ----------------------------------------------------- Source: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/trumps-privatization-plan-would-destroy-the-postal-service/2018/08/07/caaf9a24-99a2-11e8-8d5e-c6c594024954_story.html?utm_term=.574d1e03bb09

  • Bring AVR to each and every state
Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) is a game-changing solution. Here's how it works: whenever an eligible voter does business with the DMV or another public office, their information is automatically verified and securely added to the voter rolls, unless they opt out. This simple reform will make our election system much safer, less expensive, and more accessible. It's a much-needed improvement over our cumbersome, outdated voter registration process. Plus, it'd significantly increase the amount of eligible voters who participate in our democracy -- and make sure election results more accurately reflect what the people want. Automatic Voter Registration is just common sense -- and it’s already delivering major results in states across the country. In the 2016 election, Oregon bucked a nationwide low-turnout trend thanks to AVR -- with at least 100,000 newly registered voters showing up to the polls. In California, AVR registered over 250,000 new voters in just over two months. But we need to keep this momentum going! AVR has passed in 4 states this year -- including Massachusetts just this month -- and we must ensure that more follow their lead.

  • Chancellor Koch: Don't Starve Cats!
In April 2018, a group of cat advocates sterilized, vaccinated, and microchipped 19 of the University of Illinois Springfield's 20-30 feral cats. Since then, the university has prohibited any further feeding or TNVR, opting instead to trap and turn the cats over to Sangamon County Animal Control to be put to death. Sterilization is an effective means of regulating animal populations without killing. Eight of the adult cats were females in heat, and we estimate that spaying them prevented approximately 60 kittens from being born. An additional two adult females with a total of six young kittens were trapped. The kittens were placed in an adoption program, and the females were sterilized and returned. We estimate there are another ten to fifteen cats who need our help, but the university prefers to arrest anyone mediating on the cats' behalf, even if it is not against the law to do so. Free living cats pose no threat to anyone, but depend on humans for food.

  • Hire Licensed Social Workers in NYPD
Mental health professionals are better suited in dealing with mental health crisis than NYPD officers who have limited training and understanding of mental health illnesses. As such, this petition is demanding that the NYPD hires mental health professionals specifically, licensed social workers, to help them deescalate situations involving people with mental health illnesses. If you're having cardiovascular trouble, you're not going to call your dentist. Because it doesn't make sense. Similarly, people in mental health crisis shouldn't have to be attended by people who aren't qualified to understand their needs. Because NYPD has not had such support, it has led to injury and death of people with mental health illness. The best preventative measure will be to hire licensed social workers to assist the NYPD officers in deescalating situations and protecting the rights and the lives of people with mental health illnesses. By practicing better preventative care, this will result in less conflict between NYPD and the community, less incarceration rates and less involvement in child welfare.
