  • Rep. Charlie Crist has received $9,900 in NRA support.
Gun violence is a problem in our country, and although it cannot be completely eliminated, steps can be taken that would save many lives in the future. The Las Vegas tragedy is another in a long line of tragic incidents. Reinstituting the federal ban on assault weapons should be a first step. Even Ronald Reagan co-signed a letter urging the U.S. House of Representatives to support a ban on the manufacture of "assault weapons." Why won't Charlie Crist support such a law? According to an article in the American Journal of Medicine, Americans are 10 times more likely to be killed by guns than people in other developed countries. Firearm death rates per 100,000 in the US are 10.2 compared with 1.8 in Norway, 2.8 in France (where most deaths were terrorism related), and 0.6 in Spain. Just because we cannot prevent all gun violence, shouldn’t we try to prevent the 90% that is preventable with new legislation? Charlie Crist has received at least $9,900 from the NRA. The majority of Americans support prevention of gun violence, but instead of common sense legislation, we suffer the tragedies of THE BEST DEMOCRACY THAT MONEY CAN BUY!

  • ID Requirements for Burner Phone Purchases
Every 10 minutes someone in the US will die unwittingly from opioid overdose purchased from a dealer. Often opioids are laced with fentanyl to make the high more intense. The majority of the purchasers are college students. The dealers use burner phones because they are untraceable. Law enforcement has to keep up with technology.

  • Allow "No Party" Voters to Vote in Party Primaries in NYS
Many voters choose to remain unaffiliated with a political party for various reasons. They consider themselves independent or may object to political parties in general or for specific reasons. These voters represent a substantial number of voters in the the state and should have a voice, in the party of their choice, in selecting candidates at party primaries. This would help assure that the state's political parties put forward strong candidates who are electable with the population of unaffiliated voters. It would also help strengthen the party system by attracting "no party" voters to vote in their primaries.

  • Demand Representative Mike Gallagher return $41,121 in NRA support
Our elected officials should not be accepting campaign contributions from the National Rifle Association. How can they be unbiased on NRA matters that come before them if they are receiving NRA money. We sent them to Washington to work on our behalf. Ninety percent of voters say they want background checks on all gun sales. And yet, the people we send to vote on our behalf do nothing to protect the American people from the proliferation of guns.

  • "NO!" to Corporate Welfare for General Dynamics
General Dynamics -- the parent company of Bath Iron Works -- is again asking the state of Maine for a tax rebate (with the initial request = $60 million over 20 years). At a time of numerous competing needs for limited tax revenue, an incredibly profitable company (~$3 billion in profits annually; $9.4 billion spent buying its own stocks back over the past 3 years; CEO Phebe Novakovic made $21 million in 2016) does not need "assistance". Further, General Dynamic is employing mafioso-type threats, related to contracts and jobs, to hold the state of Maine hostage to their demands for these tax cuts; we are especially offended by such behavior. We join with countless people across the state and dozens of organizations who say enough is enough with this particularly obscene form of corporate welfare. Please oppose L.D. 1781 in any form.
