International Olympic Committee: Consider Climate Pollution When Choosing Host CountriesIn 2012, the International Olympic Committee released a "Sustainability Through Sport" report which recognized the threat climate change poses to the Winter Olympics and called for the world to reduce carbon emissions. And with only 6 of the 19 past Winter Olympic host cities estimated to be cold enough to host the games by 2100, you can understand why. Yet, the IOC chose Russia, the world’s largest crude oil producer and 5th largest climate polluter to host the winter games. Tell the IOC: protect the future of the Winter Olympics and weigh climate pollution when choosing host cities.94 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Emily Southard

No Fracking in the George Washington National Forest! The toxic results of using hydraulic fracturing to extract natural gas have led to the widespread contamination of drinking water, cattle being quarantined in Pennsylvania, earthquakes in Arkansas, and dangerous explosions in states across the country, among other issues. In order to protect our essential water resources, we need a national ban on fracking.433 of 500 SignaturesCreated by Rebecca Ledingham

Protect North Carolina from toxic coal ash spillsOn Sunday February 16, a Duke Energy-owned pipe underneath an unlined coal ash dump in Eden, North Carolina shattered, releasing 82,000 tons of highly toxic coal ash into the Dan River, a source of drinking water, fishing and recreation. And what's worse? This disaster wasn't reported by Duke until Monday night, more than 26 hours after they learned that the pipe had burst. Duke Energy has repeatedly claimed its coal ash dump sites are safe, but they were wrong. Let’s prevent this disaster from ever happening again. Send a message to Duke CEO Lynn Good urging her to store toxic coal ash in safer dry, lined landfills away from our water sources.776 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Ben Kroetz

NO BALLING ALLOWED!!! Save Our Health, Water, Environment, and Sea Animals.I am starting this petition because my community of Saint Helena Island South Carolina will be affected by CAROLINA JELLY BALLS, LLC's trawling of cannonball jellyfish and discharge of wastewater and toxins. The effects of the trawling will include: contaminated food source, river ways (water), environment, and a decrease in future seafood population. We are also extremely concern about our properties and neighborhoods.335 of 400 SignaturesCreated by Harold W. Doctor, Jr.

Protect the waters of New Mexico: Ban FrackingClean water is a basic human right which must be protected. Fracking is exempt from provisions in the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Clean Water Act which leaves our water unprotected. New Mexico's San Juan and Lea Counties have been devastated by fracking - water is taken by the millions of gallons and toxins are dumped into their water systems daily. In New Mexico, we want clean water - not fracking.554 of 600 SignaturesCreated by Theresa Carmody

Stop the Keystone XL Resolution in the SenateThis pipeline brings hazardous tar sands and toxic chemicals more than 2000 miles across 6 states including Kansas. It does not offer jobs as promised and this "oil" is meant for foreign markets in Asia, not the U.S. The money made on this pipeline is going into the pockets of TransCanada, not Kansas or U.S. companies.1,067 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Lori Lawrence

Protect Our Children. Stay a Mile AwayWe cannot expose a generation of children to lifelong consequences. In the Marcellus Shale field 730 wells are already permitted within two miles of a school. No emergency plan, trained personnel, special equipment, routine monitoring, or specialized skills are mandated. We must act to keep gas industrial infrastructure a mile away from our children in school.438 of 500 SignaturesCreated by Denise Garrott

Plastic Bag Bill needs to be re-introduced by NYC councilWe believe starting to charge plastic bags will dramatically reduce single-use plastic and paper bags in New York City by forcing shoppers to think twice about whether they need a bag and encourage reducing, reusing plastic bags. As the largest city in the United States, New York is taking too slow and too long to adopt legislation restricting the use of bags.80 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Green Life Foundation

Stand with West Virginia. Protect people and water from Big Coal!On January 9, Freedom Industries, a largely unregulated chemical-storage company for Big Coal, spilled thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals into the Elk River and poisoned the water for 300,000 people. One month in, Governor Tomblin of West Virginia still has his head in the sand -- and just last week, a second spill happened at Freedom Industries. This situation is spiraling of control.1,034 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Ashley Allison

The Next Keystone XL?Prediction for 2014: the next flash point in the global fight against the fossil fuel industry will take place on the quiet shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Virginia-based Dominion Resources wants to build a massive export facility in Cove Point, MD that would pipe fracked gas from Pennsylvania, supercool and liquefy it, and ship it halfway across the globe to be burned. The dangerous consequences of this fossil fuel export scheme? Increased climate-disrupting pollution, a whole lot more fracking, and a big threat to one of our national treasures. Act now to stop this project! That’s why Earthjustice is part of a coalition of state, regional and national environmental groups that have joined together with Maryland nurses, watermen, and local business owners to fight this project. Our coalition is turning out hundreds of people to town hall meetings and persuading elected officials to oppose and raise questions about the project. But one voice has been missing from the conversation: Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley. Gov. O’Malley is positioning himself as a national leader on climate change and environmental issues, and also has reported ambitions for higher office. He needs to know that people all over the country are watching how he handles the Cove Point export project.651 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Kathleen Sutcliffe, Earthjustice

Save the Meander Reservoir and Our Drinking WaterSome of the closest neighbors to our Meander Reservoir, from which more than 200,000 of us obtain our drinking water, are gas wells. All wells eventually will leak. It is written in Numbers Chapter 10:9, “When you arrive in your own land and go to war against your enemies who attack you, sound the alarm with the trumpets. Then the Lord your God will remember you and rescue you from your enemies." These wells are our enemies, and I am starting this petition to sound an alarm against them.1,065 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Rev. Monica Beasley-Martin

After WV Chemical Spill, Time to Clean Up Dirty EnergyI’m from West Virginia, and the recent chemical spill breaks my heart, makes me very angry, and makes me scared for my friends and family. Imagine not being able to give your children a glass of water to drink. Imagine not being able to cook for them, or having to tell them that they can't bathe or brush their teeth because the water will make them sick. Imagine being pregnant and told that the water could be harmful to your pregnancy. It's terrifying. That’s what happened to tens of thousands of moms in West Virginia, including many of my friends, because a toxic foaming agent used in coal processing, leaked into the Elk River and contaminated the water supply for 300,000 West Virginians, cutting them off from clean water for as many as 10 days. THE RECENT SPILL IS YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THE DANGERS OF RELYING ON DIRTY ENERGY! We all know it's time to make our energy cleaner and safer to protect the health of our families. Power plants produce 40% of our country's carbon pollution, which creates smog and provokes asthma at a time when one in 10 kids have it. There's a proposal to finally limit power plant carbon emissions. Please help me tell the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that American families want cleaner and safer energy to protect our families’ health and sign on to demand cleaner power plants now.19 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Ruth Martin
