• El Pasoans for GMO Labeling
Genetically engineered foods have not been adequately tested; it's unethical to be putting an experimental technology into the food we feed our families. I am concerned about the rise in allergies and gastrointestinal problems in children. I believe GMOs need to be labeled so that we the consumers can make our own choices. We have a right to know what we are eating and feeding our families.

  • Hydraulic Fracturing and Lubbock: Public Health Issues
Public health concerns have been raised about the oil exploration process termed "Hydraulic Fracturing". The City of Lubbock Board of Health was asked to investigate this practice and after almost one year of article review, meetings with a variety of experts in oil exploration, and gathering "best practice" recommendations, the board presented their recommendations to the City Council. Following this the council appointed an Oil and Gas subcommittee to independently review the recommendations and prepare their own submission for council. Despite having had only two meetings this committee, whose membership is heavily weighted with representatives from those companies who stand to profit by no operational restrictions, now is preparing their final report to the council. We believe that this lack of review by those who stand to profit is in error to the public health interests of our community. We are asking citizens to provide input on this petition so that other voices can be heard.

  • President Obama: reopen the investigations on fracking
Over the past year, the Obama Administration has ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to shut down one fracking-related water contamination investigation after another. When early results of investigations in Dimock, Pennsylvania, Parker County, Texas and Pavillion, Wyoming showed that the EPA had evidence linking gas drilling and fracking operations to groundwater contamination, your administration chose to "see no evil" and abandon the investigations -- and the communities suffering the impacts of oil and gas development as a result. We want to remind President Obama that he represents the American people, not the oil and gas industry.

  • Governor O'Malley: Stop A Fracked Gas Export Terminal On The Chesapeake
When Marylanders learned of the risks posed by fracking, they fought hard to protect the safety of their communities, earning a temporary moratorium on this controversial natural gas extraction technique. But this hard work could all be undone if Dominion Cove Point is allowed to build a major liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the Chesapeake Bay to export fracked gas. Help stop this project by writing to Gov. Martin O’Malley! The Dominion Cove Point LNG export terminal would be the first of its kind on the East Coast and would open up the natural gas reserves in the Eastern part of the country to foreign markets. If this facility is approved, it would encourage the oil and gas industry to frack as much and as quickly as possible so that they can sell the gas overseas where the price is higher, while hiking up the price of natural gas here at home. In addition to the immediate environmental destruction of a renewed gas rush, the upward pressure on natural gas prices could threaten existing moratoriums in Maryland and other places where fracking has been put on hold. Maryland has a pivotal role to play in this historic fight. That’s why we need your help!

  • Save San Francisco Recycling Centers
San Franciscans have a right to redeem their bottles and cans for the California Redemption Value they pay at the store. Without the recycling centers that Safeway hosts, San Franciscans will lose a convenient way to get their money back.

  • Camillus Clean Air Coalition
Our mission is to ensure the protection of the residents of Camillus from toxic gaseous emissions released during Honeywell’s remediation of the Onondaga Lake Superfund Site. Dredging is being done to remove toxic material from Onondaga lake to Wastebed 13 in Camillus. The process is creating toxic gaseous emissions in the surrounding Camillus neighborhoods. This process is going to continue for years and these toxic emissions need to be stopped! Wastebed 13 in Camillus is where the toxic material ends up. The dredging process and wastebed storage methods are producing toxic gaseous emissions that are making their way to surrounding neighborhoods. Current air quality measuring is inadequate. A safer and more reliable method (TO-16) needs to be implemented as soon as possible to improve safety and to accurately measure effects the SCA is having on our air!

  • Demand Action on Quality of Life Issues in Inwood, Northern Manhattan.
The rapid growth of the restaurant industry in Inwood has escaped thorough oversight by city agencies, This mismanagement by the responsible agencies has led to marked decrease in quality of life, an increase in environmental problems, and discord within the community. We ask that the current laws, statues and policies be enforced by regular inspections during all hours of operations. Fair and neutral inspectors can educate business owners on how to comply with city regulations, which would reduce the burden on the residents to report observed infractions. Having our local restaurants operate safely and legally would improve quality of life in the neighborhood for all.

  • Tell FERC: Don’t Rubber-Stamp Environmental Review
On June 2013, FERC issued a new 30-year license to Alabama Power Company for the continued operation of the Coosa River Hydroelectric Project. The license permits operation of seven dams spanning 225 miles of the Coosa River. Since the seven dams were built, the Coosa River has seen one of the largest extinctions in North America. Nearly 30 freshwater species have become extinct, largely due to the dams. An additional 21 freshwater species in the area are listed as endangered or threatened. The new license does little to help put these species on the road to recovery. FERC must act now to better balance energy needs with the health of the river.

  • Alexander & Baldwin - Stop Destroying Hawaii's Environment
Your spin-off, Matson Shipping carelessly pumped 1,400 tons of molasses in Honolulu harbor causing the worst marine disaster in Hawaii's history. Fish are dead. There's no way to clean it up. The entire ecosystem has been destroyed. For decades your subsidiary, HC&S, has ignored the lung disease your daily sugarcane burning has caused. Maui has the second highest asthma rate in the nation. HC&S burns 9 months out of the year and let smoke fill our homes and schools on a regular basis. You refuse to no-burn harvest which you can do (and do on some days) because you would have to hire more workers and it would decrease your profit. You operate 3 coal-fired boilers with no continuous monitoring, which spew SO2 and heavy metals on to the towns where the biggest population of our local children reside. You spread Diuron herbicide on your cane fields which runs into the ocean and is killing our reefs. You take more than your share of Maui's scarce water away from the Hawaiian taro farmers and dry up the streams of East Maui. Your operations have polluted the groundwater aquifers under your fields. You've bought out our politicians and no laws exist to control your bad environmental behavior. STOP your greedy destruction of our beautiful islands. 10/27 Update: Another molasses spill. This time Maui's Kahului Harbor. Same HC&S sugar. Same A&B infrastructure.

  • California teachers, divest retirement fund from risky and immoral fossil fuel industries
We can no longer ignore the impending danger to our planet and retirement funds by burning fossil fuel at the current rate. The atmosphere can absorb no more than 565 gigatons of CO2 before 2050. The fossil fuel industries already have the capacity in their reserves to burn 2795 gigatons.(5x the safety limit) and, at our current rate of emissions, we will reach the limit in 15 years. To ensure a livable planet for our children, 80% of the fossil fuel reserves have to stay in the ground. These reserves are already counted as assets--hence the looming carbon bubble will have to pop if we are to save the planet. CalSTRS should not make any new investments in fossil fuels and should divest from all fossil fuels within 5 years.
