  • Tell SRP: Don't Double Down on Coal!
The utility Salt River Project (SRP) already owns over 50 times more coal than solar power. Yet, they are currently considering doubling its ownership of Arizona's largest and dirtiest coal-fired power plant, the Navajo Generating Station. This power plant is one of the nation's single biggest contributors to global warming pollution and also contributes to regional haze and air quality problems in Grand Canyon National Park. Tell SRP that doubling down on coal is a bad investment for our environment and our health, and should instead invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

  • Trains through Texas
Our economy in Texas is dependent on a solid transportation system. Allowing trains to travel through Texas uninhibited will lessen traffic on our overcrowded highways. Currently, several states are considering rail programs to reduce vehicular traffic. Texas should consider this too.

  • House Bill 2082 would Trample Texans' Rights
Texas uses an important tool, the Contested Case Hearing process, because Texas respects property rights, is reluctant to grant overarching power to administrative agencies, and has a strong due course of law requirement in the Texas Constitution. Although relatively few in number, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is able to grant Contested Case Hearings to property owners, local governments, and businesses who can prove they could be adversely affected by a new or expanded facility. These Contested Case Hearings provide parties with the ability to have a discovery process and put their case before a neutral Administrative Law Judge at the State Office of Administrative Hearings (SOAH). A proposed bill in the Texas State House, House Bill 2082, would cut off access to a Contested Case Hearing for air quality, water quality and waste permits. For example, if a new or expanded power plant, landfill, mine, or wastewater facility were proposed, a property-owner, local government, or business would only be able to file for an administrative review at SOAH after a permit is granted by the TCEQ, and after the permittee can begin construction. SOAH would have complete discretion whether to grant or deny this administrative review. If an administrative review is granted there would be no evidentiary hearing, as with other SOAH hearings. In addition, if a permit is appealed in State Court, the parties protesting a permit would have a different and higher standard of review than a permit applicant pursuing a similar appeal. This bill represents a massive reworking of the permitting process in Texas, and would stack the deck against property owners, local governments, and businesses.

This plume is made up of the over lapping plumes of 6 reactors located at the Braidwood, Dresden and La Salle Nuclear Power Plant sites. The reactors that produce this plume have 6,302 Mega Watts of radiation generating power. There is a total of 3,405 tons of Highly Toxic Radioactive spent fuel stored at these Nuclear Power Plants. Braidwood Nuclear Plant has been leaking Radioactive tritium into local drinking water for over 10 years. Dresden and La Salle Nuclear power plants are also suffering difficult to solve tritium leaks.

  • Phase out the use of bunker fuel at our ports
Bunker fuel is an extremely dirty fuel used by large ships such as oil tankers and container ships - one container ship emits as much pollution as 50 million cars. Bunker-fuel-using ships cause the hazy atmosphere and air pollution around our nation's ports and health problems in those communities. But we don't have to use this type of fuel: There is a current surplus of ships, so a phase-out of bunker fuel would encourage the newest ships to visit America's ports and lead to other environmental and safety advantages. Economically, this phase-out would raise the marginal cost of shipping goods into our ports, which would have the very beneficial effect of favoring locally manufactured goods over cheap imported goods.

  • Mayor Rosenthal: Fund Enviroscape in our Community
The Enviroscape is a large, portable classroom model used to learn about the flow of water and pollutants in Earth’s water systems. Teachers from districts that participate in ESP services and who attend this session will be trained to borrow and use the Enviroscape in their classrooms at no charge! There are six different Enviroscape models that provide different types of learning opportunities. The models are: Hazardous Waste, Drinking Water, Wetlands, Coastal, Wastewater Management, and Non-Point Source Pollution. Suitable for upper elementary and middle school. • Stopping aerial spraying over Kauai and the Hawaiian Islands
Why are we feeling ill? The annual spraying of 20 billion tons of aluminum, barium, strontium, mercury and other toxic, carcinogenic and biohazardous material over cities/counties everywhere (including daily over Kauai Island an the Hawaiian Islands) is already having devastating effects on humans, the soil, the water, forests, eco and marine systems and all life forms. The short term effects have shown to be causing residents and visitors to have respiratory illnesses frequently as a result. But the long term effects are deeper, such as alzheimer's, neurological disorders and cancer. If the public were adequately informed on this topic, most would take appropriate action to put an immediate stop to these destructive activities

  • Tell Governor Snyder: Stop fracking before it pollutes the Great Lakes
Fracking is descending on Michigan: The oil and gas industry has already snatched up millions of acres of mineral rights in Michigan to greatly expand fracking throughout the state. At every stage of the drilling process, fracking puts the Great Lakes, and the waterways that feed them, at risk of water contamination, toxic waste spills and more. The Governor is holding a public forum on his energy policy on Monday 3/25. Take action now to make sure your voice is heard. Tell Governor Snyder to stop the spread of fracking before it pollutes the Great Lakes.

  • The U.S. Needs Strong Climate Protection Legislation, Now
The climate crisis is no longer a myth. From unpredictable and severe storms, crop failure, drought, and flooding, to rising tides, drowning islands, and thousands of acres of forests on fire....we need strong climate legislation from the U.S. government. Now. The fossil fuel industry is rampantly mining and drilling more of the antiquated (dinosaur) forms of fuel that have been largely responsible for the planet's current climate crisis. We can do better! This February, Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced The Climate Protection Act of 2013 (S.332) and The Sustainable Energy Act (S.329). These acts need co-sponsors from as many Senators as possible in order for them to reach the Senate floor for a vote, and then to advance to the House for their vote. We can do this. According to Sen. Sanders his climate change legislation would help business, create jobs, and save billions of dollars on disaster relief. "The price that America can not afford to pay is the price of doing nothing to reverse global warming", he states. Please sign this petition to let your lawmakers know that we are serious about national climate legislation and that as voters we are watching them. Thank you. P.S. Nothing says -' we are serious and we vote' - than a personal visit with your lawmaker. Consider getting friends together to visit them at their district offices when they are back home in your area. Ask your Senators to co-sponsor S.329 and S.332. Inform your House Reps that you expect action from them on this as well. • Senators: Don't use the budget to weaken environmental protections
Big polluters are using the budget process to attack environmental protections that are critical for our air, water, and climate. We urge the Senate to stand up to these attacks on our environment and keep our budget clean. Over the next three days, a variety of amendments to the Senate Budget that reduce or eliminate environmental protections will come up for a vote. Especially critical amendments include: •An attack on the Clean Air Act that would prohibit the EPA from issuing new regulations protecting our environment from the most polluting coal-fired power plants in the country; •An attack on the Clean Water Act that would leave over 20 percent of our waterways unprotected; •An amendment forcing construction of the Keystone pipeline, which would deepen our dependence on the dirtiest oil on the planet, oil from tar sands; •An attack on the President’s ability to protect key parks and monuments from development.
