• SAVE Bennett’s Landing NOW!
Local conservationists have begun an initiative to gain support from the City of Atlantic Beach and the community for the conservation acquisition of a marsh front property (Bennett’s Landing) that sits directly adjacent to Tideviews Preserve at 280 Camelia Street. This property will not only provide a new entrance to Tideviews Preserve for local citizens but it will also create a unique new pocket park in the Marsh Oaks neighborhood.

  • Rep. Stewart: Promote Climate Solutions, Not Climate Denial
My name is Ryan Pleune. I’m a former high school science teacher from Salt Lake City, Utah. My wife is a sixth generation Utahn, and she and I have worked together to capture Utah's pioneering spirit in addressing climate change. My congressman, Rep. Chris Stewart, was recently appointed to be the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Environment in the U.S. House of Representatives. We desperately need Congress to pass legislation on climate change, and any scientific legislation regarding climate would be heard by this Subcommittee. Yet its chairman, my representative, denies that human-caused climate change has sound science supporting it, despite the fact that every major scientific institution in the world agrees that evidence for human-induced global warming is unequivocal. Here’s what Rep. Stewart said recently: “I’m not as convinced as a lot of people that man-made climate change is the threat they think it is.” When pressed by a reporter, he added “before we make any long-lasting policy decisions that could negatively affect our economy, we need to be certain that the science behind our decisions is sound.” As a science teacher, I understand that climate science is sound: climate change is not a future problem for our younger generations to solve later. It’s here, it’s happening, and it is already costing Utah and the United States. In 2012, Utah’s wildfire season was one of the worst on record, costing a total of nearly $50 million, with about $14 million paid by Utah taxpayers. If nothing is done, climate-related disasters like these are projected to grow more common and more intense, costing our residents and taxpayers even more. That's why I'm asking Congressman Stewart to not only accept the science, but to propose legislation that will connect the dots between extreme weather disasters and climate change--and that will help mitigate the effects of both. Please add your name to the petition to help deliver this message. Thanks, Ryan Pleune Forecast the Facts Member P.S. We'll be delivering the petitions at Congressman Stewart's Davis County Town Hall on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. We'll be meeting in front of the North Salt Lake City Hall (10 East Center Street North Salt Lake City, UT) at 4:30 p.m.. All are encouraged to join!

  • Petition President Obama on the Monsanto Protection Act
We as citizens have every right to know what is in our food. Monsanto is taking over our food/seeds for profit. They are not here to feed anyone or help anybody. Millions of dollars are lobbied to congress and other political contacts for this to happen and if we do not step up it will continue.

  • Stop FirstEnergy's attack on clean energy
Ohio's Clean Energy Law has helped create enough renewable energy to power more than 95,000 homes, and its energy efficiency programs have saved enough electricity to power at least 267,000 more homes. But now, Ohio’s biggest utility and one of its biggest polluters is launching an all-out assault to keep us hooked on dirty energy. At every step of the process, FirstEnergy Corp has undermined Ohio's commitment to clean energy. They've missed annual targets for clean energy. They've taken advantage of loopholes to avoid investing in efficiency programs. And they lobbied to block the financing of Ohio's largest solar project. Now, they're pushing for legislation at the statehouse to roll back Ohio's Clean Energy Law.

  • Senators Hagan and Burr: Stop sponsoring S486 -a BAD bill for Cape Hatteras National Seashore
You should be concerned about this issue because this bill is an unfair and outrageous gift to the off-road vehicle (ORV) lobby. The bill would abolish the National Park Service's Final Rule to manage ORV use on Cape Hatteras National Seashore. In the one year of management under the Final Rule, visitation to the Seashore increased, tourism set record highs, and wildlife in the Seashore continued to rebound. The Final Rule is fairer to all parties than the Interim Rule; the public process informing the National Park Service’s Final Rule management plan included numerous public meetings and a negotiated rulemaking process that included opportunities for public comment. Most of the over 20,000 comments received supported even more stringent restrictions than those included in the Final Rule. This bill could threaten to overturn reasonable restrictions on ORV use that protect wildlife, landscapes, and people in other National Parks and Seashores because it would set a precedent. To read more about wildlife in the seashore and how opponents of unrestricted ORV use have been threatened, see: http://www.audubonmagazine.org/articles/conservation/battle-over-north-carolina-beach-continues

  • Tell SRP: Don't Double Down on Coal!
The utility Salt River Project (SRP) already owns over 50 times more coal than solar power. Yet, they are currently considering doubling its ownership of Arizona's largest and dirtiest coal-fired power plant, the Navajo Generating Station. This power plant is one of the nation's single biggest contributors to global warming pollution and also contributes to regional haze and air quality problems in Grand Canyon National Park. Tell SRP that doubling down on coal is a bad investment for our environment and our health, and should instead invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

  • Trains through Texas
Our economy in Texas is dependent on a solid transportation system. Allowing trains to travel through Texas uninhibited will lessen traffic on our overcrowded highways. Currently, several states are considering rail programs to reduce vehicular traffic. Texas should consider this too.

  • House Bill 2082 would Trample Texans' Rights
Texas uses an important tool, the Contested Case Hearing process, because Texas respects property rights, is reluctant to grant overarching power to administrative agencies, and has a strong due course of law requirement in the Texas Constitution. Although relatively few in number, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is able to grant Contested Case Hearings to property owners, local governments, and businesses who can prove they could be adversely affected by a new or expanded facility. These Contested Case Hearings provide parties with the ability to have a discovery process and put their case before a neutral Administrative Law Judge at the State Office of Administrative Hearings (SOAH). A proposed bill in the Texas State House, House Bill 2082, would cut off access to a Contested Case Hearing for air quality, water quality and waste permits. For example, if a new or expanded power plant, landfill, mine, or wastewater facility were proposed, a property-owner, local government, or business would only be able to file for an administrative review at SOAH after a permit is granted by the TCEQ, and after the permittee can begin construction. SOAH would have complete discretion whether to grant or deny this administrative review. If an administrative review is granted there would be no evidentiary hearing, as with other SOAH hearings. In addition, if a permit is appealed in State Court, the parties protesting a permit would have a different and higher standard of review than a permit applicant pursuing a similar appeal. This bill represents a massive reworking of the permitting process in Texas, and would stack the deck against property owners, local governments, and businesses.
