It's time for a greener energy future in ConnecticutRight now, the state legislature is mapping out Connecticut's energy future. It is clear that we must do something to address global warming, but special interests and corporate lobbyists are all pushing their own agendas. It's an uphill battle, but with your help we can save our environment while creating hundreds of in-state jobs. We're working on a variety of issues like the creation of a sustainable fund to retrofit thousands of old Connecticut homes, and ensuring Connecticut's place as a national leader in clean energy. Our goals include conserving energy, creating thousands of green jobs and lowering utility bills. Tell your state representatives that you support this agenda by signing our petition.235 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Elise J. Willer

Stop A Mobile ChernobylHere’s the nuclear power industry’s plan to deal with the ever-growing problem of deadly radioactive waste piling up at nuclear reactors: get it off their sites and send tens of thousands of hot casks on America’s highways and railways to one or more “temporary” unprotected sites located anywhere but on their property. Sound like a serious plan? Of course not. But some in Congress like the idea and are pushing to include that plan as part of an overhaul of the nation’s radioactive waste laws. Please sign the petition to tell Congress that “centralized interim storage” of radioactive waste—and the accompanying and completely unnecessary risk of a Mobile Chernobyl—is unacceptable. We need a permanent solution, not Fukushima Freeways. Nothing New The nuclear industry’s plan is nothing new. In fact, it’s the same plan they came up with 20 years ago, when Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS) first coined the term “Mobile Chernobyl.” The public rose in opposition, and President Clinton vetoed an “interim” storage bill passed by Congress. The Senate upheld his veto. Now we have to show that opposition again. Want more info? Go to NIRS website: www.nirs.org765 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Michael Mariotte

President Obama: Award Climate Hero Dr. James Hansen the Presidential Medal of FreedomAfter 46 years at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Dr. James Hansen recently announced his retirement. Dr. Hansen has been a true pioneer in raising awareness about climate change. In 1988, he was the first to unequivocally tell Congress that humans are largely responsible for global warming, and in the decades since, he has continued to make important contributions to climate science. He has also helped sound the alarm about the Keystone XL pipeline, writing that it would be “game over” for our climate. Dr. Hansen has faced censorship, attacks from Fox News, harassment from climate change deniers, and lawsuits from climate denial outfits. In the face of these challenges, Dr. Hansen’s dedication to truth and scientific integrity never wavered. He has continued to tell hard truths about the climate crisis, and he plans to continue researching, writing, and advocating in his retired life. Because of his scientific accomplishments and his bravery in the face of fierce opposition, Dr. Hansen deserves our country’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. It recognizes those individuals who have made “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” It is difficult to think of an American who more embodies that description than Dr. Hansen. Sign the petition below to express your gratitude to Dr. Hansen and to ask President Obama to award him our nation’s highest honor.113 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Forecast the Facts

Keep Monsanto Out of Whole Foodsthe Monsanto Corporation is using its financial tools to force Whole Foods to buy its products. Many of us depend on stores such as Whole Foods for organic and otherwise safe foods without preservatives or additives. It's time to take a stand against this powerful organization and get it out of our grocery stores!4 of 100 SignaturesCreated by LSW Lawrence

Nebraskans Join Arkansans in Petitioning for Tarsands Pipelines to Avoid FreshwaterAfter another tarsands spill, Arkansas is taking action by asking Exxon to move their pipeline from their water supply. Nebraska stands with Arkansas and asks President Obama to deny Keystone XL so we do not have to plead with TransCanada to do the basics of protecting our water. "The jobs will soon disappear, the energy independence will be on a ship to some unknown destination, but the scar on America's landscape and the risks to our water will be with us forever." -Randy Thompson, landowner3,612 of 4,000 SignaturesCreated by Jane Fleming Kleeb

Rhode Island: lagging on solarSolar energy is taking off on rooftops across the nation and in New England, providing pollution-free energy to homes, businesses, and schools, while helping to build a thriving industry. However, Rhode Island seriously lags in solar energy production compared to other Northeast states. Fortunately, there’s no secret to expanding solar. With ambitious and achievable commitments from Rhode Island lawmakers—and the right policies and programs to back them up—Rhode Island can step up and join the nation’s solar leaders.174 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Environment Rhode Island

Stop California urban sprawlRunaway development and urban sprawl is creating a serious environmental problem here in California. The attacks by developers on our remaining open space and rural areas is constant. California, by all studies, is already, population wise, in environmental overshoot. This exacerbates all of our other ecological problems. California is now a scene of water wars. Every new development, whether an expensive new housing development or another winery, is making things worse. California has already had 91% of its wetlands drained. It is predicted that the Colorado River could be functionally dry in about a decade. Much of California’s groundwater is in an overdraft state. The drought has caused the snow pack in California to be only 52% of normal as of April 1, 2013. The expansion of fracking, which uses a tremendous amount of water, is the newest threat to our water supply. The water that remains for each individual in the state is becoming increasingly polluted. According to the EPA, the number of rivers in California that are polluted increased by 170% from 2006 to 2010. Of its 3 million acres of lakes, wetlands and estuaries, 1.6 million acres are not meeting water quality standards. Our air is also being affected. The fact that our state is the 12th largest emitter of carbon in the world is behind our state being in the 90th percentile in air pollution in the country. California has 5 of the top 10 most air polluted urban areas in the country. Not only air and water, but much of our state’s resources are being depleted at an unsustainable level. If left unchecked, California will commit slow but steady suicide. Steps need to be taken, and the first should be to create a check on urban sprawl. If there is a genuinely good reason for us to lose even more of our rural land to development and sprawl, it should now be put up to a vote of the people in the area most affected. It should no longer just be left to the politicians and their developer allies. That is the inspiration behind this petition signed by California voters.20 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Gerald Manata

Protect the aina from unplanned development: keep historic legislation ponoState legislation is attempting to open Hawai`i's doors to unplanned development by amending historic preservation laws. Current legislation requires developers to perform an Archaeological Inventory Assessment (AIS), a process of coming to know what is on the landscape, prior to altering it. Bypassing this initial step is poor planning and costly. Please kill Senate Bill 117114 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Kathleen Turner

PNM: Give Us Community Solar!Community solar would allow people like me, who don’t own property and who can’t afford to install solar panels by myself, to invest in solar with my neighbors. But now, my neighbors and I don’t have that opportunity because PNM doesn’t want to let us provide our own energy.2,389 of 3,000 SignaturesCreated by Sanders Moore
