  • Reform Prop. 13/Educate Our State
California is one of the largest economies in the world, yet our public education system had been radically defunded over the last two decades. We are at the point where the UC system, once the jewel of California's public education system, is reliant on out-of-state tuition. California ranks 47th out of 50 in national per pupil funding of K-12 students. Prop. 13 has severely decreased funding for public education. Corporate entities use artificially low tax rates to increase their profits. That was not the intention of Prop. 13. The costs of goods and services rise over time. Corporate landlords should pay market rate property taxes so they can contribute their fair share to public education. We all rely on public education to produce the next generation of entrepreneurs, doctors, nurses and engineers. Let's educate the next generation. Reform Prop. 13.

  • Councilmember Tommy Wells- Mark up Bill 20-107 to Criminalize Elder Financial Exploitation by Use...
Elder financial abuse/exploitation is becoming the crime of the 21st century as the growing senior population is increasingly targeted. Elder financial abuse/exploitation by use of "undue influence" must be criminalized in the District of Columbia. DC Councilmember Marion Barry introduced Bill 20-107, "Charles and Hilda Mason Elder Abuse Clarification and Expansion Act of 2013." The Bill was referred to the Judiciary Committee chaired by DC Councilmember Tommy Wells in February 2013. Councilmember Wells is letting Bill 20-107 die in the Judiciary Committee instead of marking it up to criminalize elder financial exploitation by use of "undue influence," as 14 other states do, and reporting the Bill mark-up out of the Judiciary Committee to the Committee of the Whole for an up or down vote before the CY '2014 legislative year ends on 12/23/14. "It was once said that the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped." Hubert H. Humphrey

  • Sign the petition: Move Florida’s gubernatorial elections to presidential years
Florida’s Republican Gov. Rick Scott was narrowly re-elected this year, because the bulk of Democratic voters failed to turn out. If Charlie Crist could have run in 2012 or 2016, he would probably have won. Florida must move its gubernatorial elections to presidential years. In fact, that’s how it used to be in Florida—until segregationists in the 1960’s grew worried that increased voter turnout would threaten their grip on state politics. So they amended the state constitution to move gubernatorial elections to midterm years, with the first election in 1966. There is no reason why it can’t go back to presidential cycles, when more Floridians vote. Sign the pledge to support a constitutional amendment, moving Florida’s gubernatorial elections to presidential years. More Floridians deserve to have their voice heard.

  • Shut Down the DEA
Everyday, instead of receiving the treatment we deserve, we are mistreated, bullied, abused, robbed, incarcerated, and sometimes killed by police fighting the war on drugs, from local police to federal agents at the DEA. Enough is Enough. We will never be able to eradicate drugs from this planet, it is not conceivable nor would most of us want to because these substances have beneficial, often medicinal value. The DEA's refusal to reschedule Marijuana, and their persistence in pursuing medical marijuana patients and their families is unacceptable and has damaged countless lives. Their draconian and unjust drug laws only target people of color and mentally ill drug addicts, and create black markets and organized crime. Stop wasting Billions of dollars a year on a war that you can not win. Let's put that Billions of dollars a year towards educating young people about drugs, without scare tactics, and treating addicts like the human beings that they are and help them to get the treatment they deserve. Kicking down our doors over a medicinal marijuana plant with a swat team is unacceptable and often dangerous behavior. Shut down the DEA now!

  • Anti-Workplace Bullying Bill
I have been bullied by fellow employees for years while management turned a blind eye. My immediate coworkers laughed in agreement of the verbal abuse, sometimes joined in and stated that they would not testify to the abuse if asked. The general consensus at work is that to advance in the workplace, you have to remain silent. Since victims cannot rely on the testimony of eye witnesses, they should be allowed to secretly record their abusers, especially if it involves management. There must be a way to root out bullying in government agencies.
