Congress: Pass the Justice Safety Valve ActWhy it is important is explained at http://www.laprogressive.com/mandatory-minimum-sentencing/. The bill is designed “to prevent unjust and irrational criminal punishments.” If enacted, it would allow judges more discretion in sentencing below the mandatory minimum for many federal crimes if they are convinced that doing so would not endanger public safety. Not only would it save lives and money from being wasted, it would also demonstrate to politicians and average citizens in this time of ideological rigidity that Congress still can, at least occasionally, come together to work for the common good.471 of 500 SignaturesCreated by Walter Moss

Bullying and Cyberbullying Should be Against the LawBullying and Cyberbullying is becoming an epidemic in this country. Young men and women are taking their own lives, and in some cases being encouraged to do so by bullies. Since there is no real punishment that is serious enough for the issue, the bullies feel invincible. I have been teaching Middle School for 17 years and have seen the changes in students. My drama classes this year believe we have to make a difference. Please help us to make a change.179 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Amy Roberge

Stop the Maryville CoverupNearly 2 years ago, 14-year-old Daisy Coleman was raped at a party by a high school football star and grandson of a powerful local politician in Maryville, Missouri. But now, he’s walking free while Daisy and her family struggle to survive with what happened to her. Immediately after the rape, Daisy and her mother went to the hospital and reported the rape to police. Matthew Barnett was charged, and he confessed on tape. But months after the rape, county prosecutor Robert Rice--who has close ties to the alleged rapist's influential grandfather--dropped the charges. Worse, the town and high school ganged up not on the rapist, but on Daisy and her family. This is Steubenville all over again. And just like the Steubenville case, if thousands of us speak out and shine a national spotlight on Maryville, we can get justice for Daisy and her family. Will you sign our petition to demand justice for Daisy?3,702 of 4,000 SignaturesCreated by Nita and Shaunna, UltraViolet

I was never charged with any crime on this matter. This file is preventing me from having my grand daughter in my custody.40 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Laurie L. Metivier

Supervisors: Cancel the Taft jail contractBecause Busing inmates far away is not a community solution. It will harm families. Commutation for Colin M. GradyColin Grady has been incarcerated since February 2009 and is not set for release until May 2015. While incarcerated he has made great use of this time. He has graduated from college with a 2 year degree and is currently continuing with his education today, he has held several jobs, been an outstanding inmate, immersed himself in all the available self help programs that are offered, and graduated from a parenting course, (he did this course to make sure that he had all the appropriate skills to be the best Uncle he could to his Nephews and future children) We as his family, friends and community are ready to have him home. We feel that the time he has served is adequate punishment for the laws broken. The 26 year old man he is today is drastically different than the 19 year old boy he was in 2007. We are in full support of his early release.251 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Ashley Catalfamo
