An anti-science “alternative facts” bill just passed the South Dakota Senate and is headed to the House Education Committee this Friday. The bill, SB 55, would permit the teaching of nonscientific ideas and opinions—like climate change denialism—in science classes. It would allow miseducation of students about climate change and other topics, with local or state administrators unable to intervene. The National Science Teachers Association is strongly opposing SB 55. And the American Institute of Biological Sciences says, "we should be working to strengthen our science education system—not enabling the misrepresentation of science in the classroom." Urge South Dakota Education Committee members to support evidence-based science education, and to reject the "alternative facts" anti-science bill, SB 55!

Republicans stonewalled Obama's Supreme Court nominee in order to usurp political power, an action that defied the democratic will of the people and signaled a deliberate move toward tyranny. Catcalling threatens women and girls everywhere, the act of catcalling even by using one derogatory word can be extremely intimidating and is minimized in its legitimacy. Starting from even pre adolescent years, girls are catcalled and harassed publicly which is both scary, and an unacceptable treatment of women.

Last week, more than 400 people joined a rally in front of Gov. Hogan's office urging him to take a public position in opposition to Donald Trump's Muslim ban. And earlier this month, Attorney General Brian E. Frosh condemned Trump's actions and has called on Hogan to do the same. But so far, Gov. Hogan has been silent. Our governor must oppose this ban and represent his constituents.

President Trumps' first week in office has been a disaster for the interests and values of the American People he was elected to serve. This bill would create an undue burden on law enforcement officers, the prison or jail systems in their communities, and the surrounding communities. Each inmate in the Department of Corrections costs the State of Virginia approximately $25,129 annually, so each individual who is held for an undetermined amount of time, is costing taxpayers over that time. Additionally, this legislation will ultimately have a chilling effect within immigrant communities, which are already targets for crime, leading to victims in those communities not reporting crimes such as theft or assault because of fear of the implication for detention and deportation.
