• Authorize the Staten Island Green Charter School, Governor Cuomo!
Students on Staten Island need to learn about health and wellness and the scientific discoveries needed to create an energy efficient and sustainable environment. I am personally engaged in this project as a former Staten Island resident and a current teacher of children in a high needs school in Harlem. My mission is to improve scientific knowledge and discovery for poor urban children who have diverse learning needs, and for children living under emotional distress. It's time to use the taxpayers' money for schools that represent the needs of the community. We are the first organization to begin a health and wellness and recycling program as a community group trying to get the school launched as a K-5 school. We will begin the school with a K and 1 program in year 1. Hopefully year 1 will be now!

  • Rodney Davis & John Shimkus: Support the Iran agreement
The U.S., Iran, and the international community have reached a historic agreement to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. Unfortunately, so far Republicans like Rodney Davis and John Shimkus are bowing to pressure from pro-war special interest groups committed to undermining diplomacy, and are trying to block the agreement in Congress. Urge Davis and Shimkus to support the deal by signing our petition. UPDATE: (Monday, August 24): On Wednesday, August 26, there is a national day of action to press Congress to support the deal. We will be at Rodney Davis' office in Champaign at noon on 8/26. The sign-up for the Champaign event is here: http://civic.moveon.org/event/aug26/144726 We will be at John Shimkus' office in Danville at 1 pm on 8/26. • Declaration of War against Climate Change
The Oil and Gas companies will not stop pumping oil out of the ground and we will not stop burning it unless we demand of everyone that we address climate change now. I want my kids and grand kids to inherit a sustainable world. The forests we hike in are burning, crops are failing. It is time to act.

  • Save CA Antibiotics for Medicine, Not Factory Farms
Antibiotic resistance is a growing health crisis - the Centers for Disease Control estimates that 2 million Americans get sick each year from drug-resistant bacteria, and nearly 23,000 people die. A major culprit in this crisis is the misuse of antibiotics on factory farms, where 80% of antibiotics in the U.S. are fed to (often healthy) animals. The solution? End this dangerous practice. But instead of protecting our health, the California Assembly is considering a bill that will create loopholes to benefit factory farms and continue the misuse of antibiotics on factory farms.

  • End Workplace Abuse Now!
Richard Shaak, who was a long time and trusted employee, was terminated for simply speaking up and bringing to light what was on everyone's mind: the failure of management to provide their workforce with adequate and properly functioning tools to perform their jobs like the professionals that they aspire to be. Mr. Shaak simply wants the ability to for him and his co-workers to work with dignity and respect. Rich Shaak was fired for simply having a difference of opinion with Supervision. Obviously, Art Gasper and Gary Tuerk, the owners of Meridian Electrical Associates, do not value what their employees have to say. Even worse, they will not tolerate any differences of opinions between the workers, and management. Please let Art Gasper and Gary Tuerk know that suppressing freedom of speech will not be tolerated. Please sign our petition today and demand that Rich Shaak be reinstated NOW!

  • Fix Overtime: Raise the Overtime Salary Threshold to $50,440
For over 30 years, wages in America have remained stagnant while productivity has increased and corporate profits have reached all-time highs. In order for more of those corporate profits to reach the pockets of workers, not just the wealthy few, we need updated rules governing worker protections such as overtime pay and the minimum wage. In 1975, the overtime threshold covered over 60 percent of salaried workers. Today, only 8 percent are covered. Raising the salary threshold—the level below which all workers are guaranteed overtime pay—to $50,440 would increase the share of salaried workers covered significantly. Earlier this year, EPI supporters delivered thousands of petition signatures urging the Department of Labor to increase the overtime salary threshold, and thanks to you we’re almost there. The Department of Labor’s 60-day comment period ends Friday, September 4, and they need to hear from you! Big Business—including the National Retail Federation, the National Association of Home Builders, and other corporate lobbyists—are once again opposing common-sense approaches to raising workers’ wages. They are demonizing this new rule and misrepresenting how it will positively impact the lives of workers and their families. Millions of workers need our help!

  • Sign the petition to McDonald's
McDonald’s is the world’s second biggest employer – but they consistently underpay workers, accused even of withholding pay and forcing us to work in illegally dangerous conditions. They’re the world’s biggest food supplier – but they consistently poison public trust by dodging taxes and pushing off costs onto public coffers. It has to stop – NOW. I worked at a McDonald’s in Brazil for a year and a half, and I was fired. I spoke out about how McDonald's exploits not just their employees, but my whole country. Tell McDonald’s: STOP. It’s NOT ok for McDonald’s to abuse public trust, withhold pay, or dodge taxes. The race to the bottom needs to stop now.

  • Death With Dignity
I AM WRITING TO ASK YOU TO SPONSOR LEGISLATION THAT MAKES THE MEDICAL PRACTICE OF AID IN DYING ACCESSIBLE FOR THE PEOPLE OF ARIZONA. IT IS GOOD LAW AND RESPONSIBLE POLICY WITH A DOCUMENTED RECORD OF SAFETY. LIKE 70 PERCENT OF PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY, I BELIEVE THAT OUR RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS ARE OURS TO EXERCISE UNTIL WE TAKE OUR LAST BREATH, AND HAVING A TERMINAL ILLNESS DOESN’T CHANGE THAT. I AM CALLING ON YOU AS MY ELECTED LAWMAKER TO GUARANTEE THOSE RIGHTS FOR ME. YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY AND THE RESPONSIBILITY TO GIVE THIS FREEDOM TO YOUR CONSTITUENTS. THE RECORD SHOWS THAT IN STATES WHERE IT IS AN AUTHORIZED MEDICAL PRACTICE, AID IN DYING WORKS AS INTENDED, AND IS NOT SUBJECT TO ABUSE. IT ALSO PROVIDES GREAT PEACE OF MIND TO TERMINALLY ILL ADULTS AS THEY APPROACH LIFE’S END. AID IN DYING IS NOT A CHOICE OF DEATH OVER LIFE. IT IS AN OPTION FOR THOSE WHO ARE DYING THAT SPARES THEM UNBEARABLE SUFFERING AND OFFERS A CONTROLLED AND PEACEFUL ENDING. ALL DYING PEOPLE DESERVE THAT OPTION, AND THE TREMENDOUS PEACE OF MIND THAT COMES WITH IT. PLEASE, DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO ENSURE ACCESS TO DEATH WITH DIGNITY IN ARIZONA.

  • CLOSING OF EXIT 142/CURTIS SYKES DRIVE
We, the undersigned citizens of North Little Rock, Arkansas, hereby petition the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department to reconsider the proposed closing of exit number 142 on US Interstate 30, also known as Curtis Sykes Drive, North Little Rock, Arkansas. Our concerns are as follows: 1. The proposed closing has not been carefully reviewed to include all relative feedback, as the latest plans were not initially presented to the community that has been directly affected. This appears as deceit on the part of the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department. 2. The closing of this exit will pose a great negative impact to the businesses in the area. These businesses utilize the entrance and exit onto Interstate 30 to procure and deliver their goods and services in a timely manner. The proposed change will impact their logistical efforts as to provide efficient service to their customers. a. There are three business parks in the area that also house several business entities. b. There are several dozen churches in the neighborhood adjoining these exits that are served by these entrance and exit ramps. 3. The closing will cause a larger congestive traffic area in the vicinity of Verizon Arena and Dickey Stephens Park during major events, as this entrance and exit are used by travelers as a secondary means of egress. 4. If the exit is moved to the proposed 19th street location, the students that are walking to local schools or participating in the local youth program on this corner are endangered by oncoming traffic traveling at a potentially high rate of speed. 5. CNG gas is the only Natural Gas refill station on Interstate 30 in the area, and will not be easily accessible by the agencies that utilize this service. 6. There are new street plans underway due to the completion of the North Little Rock High School. Due to these plans, closing this exit will cause a backup and delay in traffic on Main Street, which will make it more difficult to access the impacted areas. 7. The proposed closing reflects an injustice to the neighborhoods immediately surrounding and accessible by the entrance and exit, thereby isolating them and causing inaccessibility to the interstate and inconvenience to residents. 8. Residents of the Lakewood neighborhood will face additional traffic congestion while attempting to go into and from downtown North Little Rock, downtown Little Rock, and Interstate 40. 9. Curtis Sykes Drive is a major thoroughfare that leads to North Hills Blvd. 19th Street is a smaller, more congested area abutted by the housing projects. 10. The Curtis Sykes Drive exit is of historical significance to the residents of North Little Rock. Curtis Sykes was a community leader who fought to provide equal access to all the populace of the state and the proposed closing of the entrance and exits at this location casts a negative light on the efforts of the citizens to herald his accomplishments. We hereby affix our signatures, along with our addresses, in opposition to the closing of the entrance and exit ramps leading to Interstate 30 from Curtis Sykes Drive
