• Tell Maryland Legislators: Fracking Moratorium Now!
With Maryland’s new governor, Larry Hogan, saying he supports moving forward with fracking for gas in our state -- and with mounting evidence of the threat to our health -- we don’t have a moment to lose. Ask your state legislators to protect Maryland residents by passing a long-term moratorium on fracking! The Protect Our Health and Communities Act (HB 449/SB 409), recently introduced in the Maryland General Assembly with over 45 co-sponsors, would put a hold on drilling in Maryland. The bill would provide time for long-term health studies on fracking to be conducted, so that we fully understand the risks before deciding to subject Maryland residents to a public health experiment. Call on your legislators to act in 2015 -- before the gas industry is allowed to rush in and cause potentially irreversible harm to our air, water, soil and health.

  • Stand with Providence's bus monitors.
Providence's bus monitors work hard to keep our kids safe every school day. But Mayor Elorza is considering replacing these dedicated professionals with outsourced, underpaid workers who may lack the experience, commitment, and training required to properly prioritize the lives of our students. The average Providence bus monitor earns less than $12.50/hour, yet their work is invaluable: Their jobs were created after the tragic accidental death of a student in 1985. There had been at least one fatal student death each year from 1979 until monitors were mandated -- and since then there hasn't been a single one while a monitor was on duty. Bus monitors are from the community and depend on this job to maintain their homes, afford health care, and send their children to school. We need to tell Mayor Elorza that he needs to do right by working families and Providence's children -- just like he promised in his campaign. Sign the petition telling him not to privatize Providence's bus monitors.

  • Censure John Boehner
People should be concerned when any member of congress attempts to manipulate the delicate balance of US foreign relations to further a personal agenda. Doing so in complete disregard for the impairment it may cause to the US government's ability to conduct foreign policy is reprehensible.

  • Do not phase out Ohio Independent Health Workers
Governor Kasich is proposing in his two year state budget to accept billing only from certified home health agencies and NOT Independent Health Aides, nurses or other certified independent providers. This cut will leave over 13,000 Independent Workers without income as well as leave over 16,000 individuals (mostly developmentally disabled individuals) without their day to day care.

  • Restrict and Reduce Standardized Testing
On Thursday February 12th 2015, the NJ State Legislature's Education Committee will vote on whether or not to recommend to make standardized testing (such as PARCC) illegal before grade 3 and to force schools to provide an Opt-Out policy for older students. A third legislation under discussion would limit the use of PARCC results for the next 3 years. It is imperative that the many wonderful legislators who have sponsored and co-sponsored these bills go into session with the views of their constituents in hand and available to share with others. By signing this petition, you give our elected officials the tools they need to get the job done.

  • We support the USW unfair labor practices strike against big oil companies
We don't want any more workers to die. That's why the United Steelworkers union is taking on the richest, most powerful industry in the world by fighting to secure a fair contract that will protect the health and safety of workers and communities. The oil industry's greed and bad-faith bargaining have stalled efforts to improve conditions in its workplaces. The industry has refused to address serious health and safety issues that have already killed thousands of workers over the years. We support the efforts of the USW union to improve the working conditions of the striking refinery workers. Jobs in refineries are dangerous and require a high level of skill. As we know from the BP disaster, mistakes can cause catastrophes for the surrounding communities and the environment. These workers deserve to be treated fairly. Failure to bargain fairly in these negotiations will only reflect the oil industry's lack of regard for the workers and the communities in which its enterprises are located.

  • Veterans Monument Location
The board approved a site for the Veterans Monument with NO support from the surrounding neighbors. The Ranch House grounds provide a much more centralized location and will not negatively impact any Ken-Caryl residents. This monument should be located at the Ranch House, not on the corner of Sangre de Cristo and Crestone Mountain.

  • No to war with Russia!
President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and Senator John McCain have dishonored the people of the United States by their support of the fascist government in the Ukraine. Any military assistance to the anti-Semitic, anti-worker government in the Ukraine would be an act of provocation towards Russia. Working people do not need a war with Russia which without doubt would be catastrophic to Europe and the United States at the very least. We must not forget that we can all be cremated equally!

  • Oppose Merit Pay for "Highly Effective" Teachers
I am an elementary teacher who has seen excellent colleagues leave the profession because they don't feel free to do what's best for kids. I have been rated poorly based on my students' performance on the state test while I was on maternity leave. The next year I was rated much better...because I was actually at my job for the full year. This system is highly flawed. Merit pay incentives will only make the situation worse.
