Accountability for those who authorized tortureCitizens of the United States do not wish our agents to use torture under any circumstances. It is not only wrong, it will result in harm to our troops and other citizens. Nothing Dick Cheney or the head of the CIA can say will change the fact that the end does not justify the means. The US is in violation of the Geneva Convention and our own laws. The Nation says: "Human experimentation was a core feature of the CIA’s torture program. The experimental nature of the interrogation and detention techniques is clearly evident in the Senate Intelligence Committee’s executive summary of its investigative report, despite redactions (insisted upon by the CIA) to obfuscate the locations of these laboratories of cruel science and the identities of perpetrators. At the helm of this human experimentation project were two psychologists hired by the CIA, James Mitchell and Bruce Jessen. They designed interrogation and detention protocols that they and others applied to people imprisoned in the agency’s secret “black sites.” In its response to the Senate report, the CIA justified its decision to hire the duo: “We believe their expertise was so unique that we would have been derelict had we not sought them out when it became clear that CIA would be heading into the uncharted territory of the program.” Mitchell and Jessen’s qualifications did not include interrogation experience, specialized knowledge about Al Qaeda or relevant cultural or linguistic knowledge. What they had was Air Force experience in studying the effects of torture on American prisoners of war, as well as a curiosity about whether theories of “learned helplessness” derived from experiments on dogs might work on human enemies. To implement those theories, Mitchell and Jessen oversaw or personally engaged in techniques intended to produce “debility, disorientation and dread.” Their “theory” had a particular means-ends relationship that is not well understood, as Mitchell testily explained in an interview on Vice News: “The point of the bad cop is to get the bad guy to talk to the good cop.” In other words, “enhanced interrogation techniques” (the Bush administration’s euphemism for torture) do not themselves produce useful information; rather, they produce the condition of total submission that will facilitate extraction of actionable intelligence."35 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Joette Storm

Don't let PNM fine solar users out of business to subsidize dirty coalNew Mexico’s monopoly public power company wants to buy a coal mine – and they just announced a new plan that includes fining residential solar producers to pay for it. PNM should support clean energy, not more dirty coal. New Mexico's elected Public Regulation Commission members must not vote to approve PNM's new rate and fine plan. Tell them you want them to vote NO.7,091 of 8,000 SignaturesCreated by ProgressNow NM

We can't stop until there is a Bully protocol in EVERY school.I have not been personally affected by bullying; however, I do work with children who have been bullied at school or in their community. What bullying does to these young lives is horrible. These children fear going to school, which should be a safe place to learn and grow. These children live in fear of their bullies and learn to self hate. Bullying is an issue that needs to be stopped; we need to build up our youth NOT let them tear each other apart. Maybe if our youth learned how to be more respectful, kind and accepting of others differences from the start in their adult future there could be less hate.32 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Shannon Meaney

Prosecute those responsible for authorizing torture.Torture is illegal as well as morally reprehensible. Our nation has been perceived by the world as the enviable example of liberty and justice. Every citizen of the U.S. must now suffer with the knowledge that our past leaders abused their authority by authorizing the use of torture on detainees post 09/11/01. We can't change history, but we can punish those who dare bring this nation down with their illegal use of torture.69 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Jerry Giefer

Aloha Aina = Decentralize the Hawaii Department of EducationAloha Aina = Decentralize the Hawaii Department of Education We call on the immediate resignation of State Superintendent, Kathryn Matayoshi, for (the people’s opinion) poor leadership qualities and for harnessing a toxic organizational culture Failed Impetus of Hawai'i's State Government I'm an Independent constituent who is an expert in applied systemic theory. With clear conscious, the State of Hawai’i’s government is imperiling due to the mismanaged structure of its Department of Education. The Department of Education accounts for about half of the State’s budget. This means its equivalent in size to the Executive Branch and to some extent the State’s Superintendent is as powerful as the governor. As an individual who has worked in Special Education, some of my colleagues are tired of legislators probing the lack of funds available to this department. Some of my colleagues at HSTA (teachers and principals) are tired of the distress that centralized education yields. This yield indicates there are too many managers and not enough front line workforce employees; thus, the deficiency of educational services. Furthermore, DAGS lacks the capital for improvements. Children shouldn't have to sit in classrooms with 30 or more students in decaying environments. This legislative session the people call for decentralization of the Department of Education and want to empower their Complex Area Superintendents, as well as their communities to have the resources to provide Hawai’i’s children with a high caliber of education in a healthy platform. We call on the immediate resignation of State Superintendent, Kathryn Matayoshi, for (the people’s opinion) poor leadership and for harnessing a toxic organizational culture. This restructure will do several things. First, vet toxicity out of the Department of Education with too many managers and provide DAGS with capital improvement equity to provide harmonious workplaces and high quality learning environments. Furthermore, this initiative will increase the number of front line employees, such as more teachers (help with attrition), empower Complex Area Superintendents, and communities to take ownership of their students’ learning. This will put a little common sense back into the Department of Education by not putting schools in toxic areas, such as where Monsanto and DuPont operate. True leadership would understand the profound impacts this has for children and State employees or at least be the necessary change to secure their safety.44 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Meghan Azimi
