• Washington State Legislature: Stop Social Security Cuts!
The notion that President Obama wants to cut social security is just preposterous and would have devastating effects on so many Americans! According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Social Security is the primary income for 65 percent of elderly beneficiaries. More than 14 million elderly Americans - including my grandmother - would be impoverished without it. Social Security is not welfare or medicare; it is not "free" money, and it does not add to the national deficit. The majority of Social Security recipients worked their whole lives paying into this system, and they trusted the government with their investment. It's time for them to get the return they were promised - and not a penny less!

  • Do Not Cut Social Security
While cost of living continues to increase on all Americans especially the elderly who live on a fixed income, how are they expected to live out their golden years? Are we to choose between helping my mother--my children’s grandmother--live comfortably by taking away from my retirement savings or their college fund to help mom? We should be increasing Social Security benefits for both moral and practical reasons. It is simply wrong to allow elderly people to drown in the name of future financial problems.

  • Congress : Take Responsibility for Sequester
Congress has been failing to work with results in mind, and each party is blaming the other, focusing on mud slinging and party positioning instead of leadership for the good of all. When Congress fails to do their job and defaults to something like a sequester why should others pay the consequence while they remain immune to that which they themselves caused?

  • Banned from volunteering at church
Imagine returning from your honeymoon only to be called into your pastor's office and told you're banned from volunteering in church ministries, simply because you got married. Nicholas Coppola is a member of St. Antony's Roman Catholic Church in Oceanside, New York, where he used to lead religious education classes, serve as a lector, and visit homebound parishioners. Nicholas is gay and has been out to everyone at church for years -- a number of parishioners even attended his wedding. But after Nicholas got married, someone sent an ugly anonymous note to the bishop and suddenly he was banned from volunteering at church. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops claims they're not anti-gay. Just this week their spokeswoman wrote that "No one is carded at a Catholic Church. Shunning is not the Catholic tradition." Now Nichoas Coppola's bishop has an opportunity to prove it.
