• Citizens Opposed to U.S. Department of Justice Approval of the Proposed 2012 Redistricting Plan f...
On Sept. 12, 2011 Beaufort County Council approved a 2012 redistricting plan for the Beaufort County School Board that will require 10 of the 11 current incumbent school board members to run for re-election in 2012, although several of them were just elected in 2010. We believe that the plan was designed primarily to dismantle the majority-Black leadership of the school board, although 3 of the 6 African-Americans members don't represent majority-Black districts. Also, requiring 10 incumbent school board members to run in the same year erases the safeguards created by staggered elections, and will disrupt the stability of the school district's governing body. We ask that the DOJ reject the plan because it threatens to undermine minority voting strength; drastically reduces Black representation on both the school board and county council board with an impact that is both draconian and punitive for Black elected officials who're not Republicans.

  • Let the #occupychicago movement stay in Grant Park without arrests
Don't let the Chicago movement be forced out of Chicago. Let those who occupy the streets have a base where they can stay, regardless that the park arbitrarily closes at 11 p.m.

  • Don't Change Yourself. Change the Law.
In Michigan you can be fired if someone thinks you’re gay. Current state civil rights law protects against workplace discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion and national origin. What it doesn’t do is extend those protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Tell House Speaker Bolger to change the law to protect all Michiganders.

  • I support the Healthy Workplace Bill in Massachusetts
The Healthy Workplace Bill creates a legal claim for bullying targets who can establish that they were subjected to malicious, health-harming behavior. It also provides defenses for employers who act preventively and responsively with regard to bullying and includes provisions to discourage frivolous claims. http://www.mahealthyworkplace.com

  • DOMA: We Catholics Support Pres. Obama
Archbishop Timothy Dolan (New York City) President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued on September 20, 2011 an official plea to President Obama to "push the reset button on your Administration‟s approach to DOMA." (Defense of Marriage Act). The Archbishop speaks on behalf of the US Bishops in requesting the President's defense of DOMA instead of moving to declare it as unconstitutional. We the undersigned practicing Catholics wish to support President Obama with all due respect to our bishops and the "millions of citizens" Archbishop Dolan invokes as supporting him. Petition authored by Tom Luce, 73, Berkeley, Ca; 510-684-6163; ordained priest 1963 in Rome with S.T.L. from Gregorian Univ.; married faithfully to woman 41 years ; excommunicated/laicized against will/marriage now blessed; 3 children, 3 grandchildren; publicly declared same gender oriented, 2000 during Vermont same sex marriage legislation. • Take Tasers out of Flagler County Schools
Tasers have risks associated with their use. The law mandates that parents send their children to school. Schools act in loco parentis and are responsible for the safety of the children in their care. Parents can not Tase their children with impunity. Take the police out of the schools and hire trained unarmed security guards in their place. Students don't shed their constitutional rigbts at the schoolhouse door.

  • Vote Against Public Employee Domestic Partner Benefits Restriction Act
Recently, the Michigan House of Representatives passed HB 4770, the Public Employee Domestic Partner Benefits Restriction Act, and HB 4771, an amendment to 1947 PA 336. Together, these bills seek not only to prevent our universities and colleges, schools and public services from providing health benefits to the domestic partners of public employees, but they also seek to strip health benefits from people who have already negotiated contracts extending these benefits to domestic partners. This legislation is not only morally reprehensible but also economically myopic.
