  • Keep Advertising OUT of Seattle Public Schools!
For the past several years, Seattle Public Schools has been a national leader in efforts to limit the influence of advertising in the school environment. The existing policy banned all advertising in schools because “compulsory attendance creates an obligation for the school district to protect the welfare of students”. However, on June 20, the Seattle School Board is voting to amend their current policy to ALLOW CORPORATE ADVERTISING IN THE SCHOOLS. The proposed amendment is extremely vague and allows advertising banners to be hung on school “fields” (ie, next to playgrounds) and reinstates Channel One, a controversial ad-supported classroom TV network. The proposed amendment mentions that the funds “may” be used for ASB (ie student activity funds), but it makes no promise that the funds will go there rather than to general district overhead and bureaucracy. Despite the economic crisis facing most of us, American corporations are making record profits. School districts should be TAXING corporations rather than doing their bidding for a few crumbs. (One could argue that many of these corporations created the financial crisis that drained tax revenues and increased schools’ dependence on corporations.) What can you do: - Email or call your school board members. Contact info below, along with a sample letter. - Attend the next School Board meeting on June 20 at 4:15 pm. (Testify! Hold signs! Make noise!) - Sign this ONLINE PETITION that we will deliver to the district - Educate yourself about this issue - Send this email to ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS - Share this on Facebook, etc with as many people as possible. - For more info, please contact the Occupy Seattle Public Education Working Group at [email protected] or like us on Facebook!

  • help control paying back student loans.
This would help millions of people who have school loans like myself pay it back. The economy is bad write now and a lot of people are unemployed including myself. Some can only afford to give 10 maybe 20 dollars towards loans because we have to pay our rent food and other bills first.

  • Support authorization of the School for Examining Essential Questions of Sustainability (SEEQS)
SEEQS’ founding board--a group of committed and experienced educators, parents, and community members--plans to open a free, public charter school in Honolulu in August 2013 that will serve 6th and 7th graders and expand to include 6th- 12th grades by 2018. The mission of the School for Examining Essential Questions of Sustainability (SEEQS) is to foster lifelong learning among a diverse group of secondary-level students through exploration within authentic learning environments. SEEQS graduates will be stewards of planet Earth and healthy, engaged citizens of Hawaii and the world. SEEQS’ authorization is partly contingent on showing the Public Charter School Commission that there is abundant community support for such a school. Please sign this petition if you would be interested in sending your child to SEEQS and/or if you would support the school opening in the community. Then pass it on to friends and colleagues in the Hawaii community. Mahalo! Please include your city/state when signing so that the Commission can verify that we have *local* community support! Parents: indicate that you are a parent in the comments section—that will strengthen our application! If you are interested in learning more about the school, please visit our website at www.seeqs.org.

  • Reinstatement of our Guidance Counselor
Guidance counselors play a vital role in our school community. Without them our school will not be able to function and the students will not receive the necessary information they need in terms of planning their future, personal issues, and college information. Most colleges require students to send a recommendation from a counselor and getting a new counselor for the 2012-2013 school year will greatly affect the student's college process.

  • Keep Maryland High School Valedictorian in U.S. for College
Jireh Lee Silva was this year's valedictorian at Wise High School in Upper Marlboro, Md., but she has no green card of her own -- and a recent hiccup interfered in processing her mother Nerisa's green card. Nerisa brought her daughter to this country four years ago legally, as a dependent under her visa. And while Jireh has dreams of becoming a doctor and has been accepted into a number of colleges, she doesn't have the means to pay for them. And Jireh can't apply for financial aid because she does not have a Social Security number. She says all the accolades she's worked to achieve mean nothing now that she can't stay in this country. She's packing her things and getting ready to head back to the Philippines by next month in order to start college there.
