Protect the Great Lakes from an oil pipeline spillEvery day 64-year-old pipelines push nearly 23 million gallons of oil through the heart of the Great Lakes. What if they ruptured? These aging pipelines, called Line 5, are owned by Canadian company Enbridge and lie exposed in the water at the bottom of the Straits of Mackinac, where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet. A spill here would be catastrophic. Another Enbridge pipeline ruptured in Michigan in 2010 and spilled 1 million gallons of heavy crude oil into the Kalamazoo River. It was the largest land-based oil spill in U.S. history, and is took years to clean up. Enbridge's Line 5 pipeline through the Great Lakes is 15 years older than that one was when it ruptured. PIPELINES FAIL. THESE AGING PIPELINES IN THE STRAITS ARE NOT WORTH THE RISK. WE NEED YOU TO HELP PREVENT A DISASTER. Michigan should not put the Great Lakes, our economy, health, drinking water, fisheries, and way of life at risk from a catastrophic oil spill any longer. Michigan's year-long study of Line 5 alternatives has been released and the state is gathering public comment. Now is the time to submit your comment calling for the only way to truly protect the Great Lakes from an oil spill: shut down the Enbridge Line 5 pipelines through the Straits of Mackinac.208 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Oil & Water Don't Mix

Tell the Forest Service not to build roads through old growth forestsI am starting this petition because naively, I believed that old growth was sacred and that the forest service would never build roads or log in such a precious place. At a recent field trip looking at a huge logging project in Western Montana, I asked the economist if they would build roads through old growth. He said yes without batting an eye. I also discovered that they are running roads in old growth and a known Goshawk nesting sight in another project. I thought the Forest Service was a steward of the forest. I thought they wanted to care for it and protect it. But instead, the Montana forests are forced to produce board feet based on logging mandates made by politicians and timber lobbyists. So they must get it in any and every way possible which includes destroying old growth.15 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Michele Dieterich

Gov Brown/CA Legislature: Upgrade Cap and Trade. Pass SB775Senate Bill 775 needs our support to counter an alternative proposal from Big Oil that does nothing to improve cap and trade, keeping the carbon price very low for years. WHAT WE NEED: A HIGH PRICE COLLAR TO PRICE CARBON with a floor of $60 and a ceiling of $120/ton of CO2 by 2030 AN END TO OFFSETS that allow local pollution to continue AN END TO FREE POLLUTION ALLOWANCES A CLIMATE DIVIDEND that returns revenue to every CA resident TO DEAL WITH SURPLUS ALLOWANCES from the current program to not undermine the post-2020 program WITH ACCELERATION OF RENEWABLE POWER in the state, as Community Choice Energy takes off county by county, along with technological advances in energy storage and in small wind, like PRIMO WIND out of San Diego, we are now primed as a state to transition to a CLEAN ENERGY ECONOMY and lead the rest of the US. SB775 helps move that crucial path forward. SB 775 would provide the mechanism to effectively bring about a market-driven transition to clean energy by amending California’s cap and trade system to establish a predictable, steadily rising price on fossil fuels with corresponding dividends returned to all adult residents. That would create society wide demand for green energy technology creating new jobs and industries and make clean energy a driving force of our economy. SB775 was authored by State Senator Bob Wieckowkski (D-Fremont/10th district, including parts of Alameda/Santa Clara counties), chair of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee. SB775 is supported by groups that include the following: Citizens Climate Lobby 350 Bay Area San Diego 350 SoCal350 Union of Concerned Scientists Physicians for Social Responsibility SF Californians for a Carbon Tax Friends of the Earth organizations and economists at these universities: Stanford, Colorado State and Duke. Stop the dangerous Jordan Cove LNG Terminal and Pacific Connector Pipeline project! The Western Environmental Law Center and a coalition of conservation groups have challenged this LNG project for years, and we secured a great victory when the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rejected the Jordan Cove-Pacific Connector project in early 2016 after it was determined that the drawbacks of the pipeline outweigh its public benefits. Now it’s back thanks to the Trump Administration’s plans to allow fossil fuels to further exploit our natural heritage, our communities, and our climate. The Western Environmental Law Center is a nonprofit, public-interest environmental law firm. Our expert attorneys are ready to use the full power of the law to stop the dangerous and destructive Jordan Cove LNG Terminal and Pacific Connector Pipeline project. WELC will be submitting all signatures and comments below to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on July 10, 2017.783 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Michelle Loth, Western Environmental Law Center

Stop Spraying Poison along the Rio GrandeDid you know that the Department of Transportation is regularly spraying more than 600 gals of Roundup and other harmful chemical herbicides along Highway 68, a 24-mile Rio Grande River corridor? I saw it happening and stopped the driver, and got some details on the spraying. Then I asked him if he knew that in this area we have all kinds of migratory birds (including the bald eagle), all sorts of fish and that people swim, raft, fish and live here. This water is used to grow our food. This River is our Life line. It's the Life line of the entire area and for all the creatures large and small. Water is precious. Water is Life. It needs to be protected, not poisoned. "Glyphosate may well be the most toxic chemical ever approved for commercial use, as it is now linked to kidney disease, antibiotic resistant bacteria, inflammatory bowel disease, depression, ADHD, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis, cancer, cachexia, infertility, and developmental malformations. It destroys the microbiome of humans and plants, which is the root cause of many modern diseases". Ban Round Up In Our Town2,014 of 3,000 SignaturesCreated by Gaia Khan

Commit Louisiana to Paris Climate AgreementOn June 1, 2017, the current president declared that America would no longer abide by the agreements of the Paris Climate Accords. This is an agreement that was made to mitigate the affects of greenhouses gases on global climate change. It has been signed by 195 countries. This is a move that purports to put America first but in reality puts the Earth last. It is now up to the governors of the 50 individual United States of America to do what Trump will not. This issue is particularly important to the state of Louisiana. Scientifically recognized maps show our state being mostly under water in the very foreseeable future. This may or may not be a preventable future but the least we can do is slow it down.654 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Rachel Watts

Tell Governor Bryant to Join the Coalition of States Committed to the Carbon Reduction Efforts of...Climate change is a serious crisis that impacts every one in the world. If we do not begin taking the actions needed to save our planet, it will become uninhabitable for ourselves and future generations. Although President Trump has decided to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, several states have come together to create a coalition committed to the carbon reduction efforts required by the agreement. Please help me in urging Governor Bryant to enlist Mississippi in this coalition in order to save the planet from climate change! If we don't start taking efforts to combat it now, it may be too late. Climate change is real. We cannot deny it any longer.342 of 400 SignaturesCreated by Erica Herman

Congress: Teach Climate Change on State WebsitesAs a resident of a coastal state with a thriving tourism industry, I am extremely concerned about the impact that rising sea levels due to global warming will have on our economy.
